1 Adar - Nisan 5777 March 2017 An unforgettable musical experience to support the Seth Rich Memorial Camp Scholarship Fund We are extremely excited to announce this year s Cantor s Concert: The Rising Stars of American Jewish Music to benefit the Seth Rich Memorial Camp Scholarship fund, which will take place on Sunday, March 26 at 4 pm. This event will be a double feature starring BANOT and Noah Aronson. Joining them will be the real rising stars our young singers from Beth El and some adult participants from the community. BANOT (daughters) is a wonderful group of four talented Israeli women musicians. Their distinctive musical flavor is derived from the worlds of jazz, R&B, classical, and folk. Joining them will be another rising star, singer and songwriter Noah Aronson. Noah s music is sung to acclaim in progressive communities and summer camps. Noah s music has also been featured on two compilations from the PJ Library series. Noah Aronson will also be bringing his unique vision, joy, enthusiasm and energy to our annual Hebrew School 4H camp Shabbaton that weekend. Noah will be teaching songs that will be performed at the concert. An adult workshop will also be offered Sunday prior to the event. This year s concert is especially significant as it is dedicated to the memory of Omaha s son and one of the rising stars, Seth Rich a vital and promising young man who was senselessly slain in Washington, D.C., last summer. Seth was a passionate advocate of Jewish summer camps and their values. The need for Jewish summer experience scholarships is ever increasing as more and more of our families seek to take advantage of this invaluable opportunity to provide an extremely positive, nurturing Jewish environment for their children. Since recipients of these scholarships repay them with service to Beth El, your donation provides both unforgettable Jewish experiences and guarantees that our youth have an ongoing connection to Beth El a wonderful investment in the growth and future leadership of our community! Join us for a joyous and unforgettable musical experience and support the Seth Rich Memorial Camp Scholarship fund. Additional information about the performers and tickets can be found on our website,

3 Complete the Story of your Loved Ones By Rabbi Steven Abraham While it is no joy when a member of our community passes, I have found an unfortunate opportunity to hear stories from family and friends of the deceased while preparing for a funeral. It is an honor to be able to sit with families and learn about their loved ones, to hear about their parents and for whom they were named. To hear where they grew up and their experiences in Omaha. How they met the love of their life, their hobbies, passions and skills. I can envision an era of Jewish Omaha that I was not privy to; perhaps they attended Central High and then walked across the street to the old JCC; perhaps they were married at the old Beth El building on 49th and Farnam. It has become an honor to hear how they will be remembered by their children and grandchildren, and the values they passed on to the next generation. Yet the greatest tragedy, other than the loss itself, is when the stories are a mystery either because they were never discussed or no one ever asked. As I have written about before, one of the rituals of shiva is to hear from friends and family stories that were perhaps never known to the family. To hear what an amazing friend their parent had been, or what an honest and hard working employee or boss they had been. We know our loved ones through one lens; to hear from others is to complete a story for which we only know a few chapters. What I would like to suggest is that we take the opportunity to ask our ROOTED IN TRADITION. EMBRACING CHANGE. 3 family members about their stories, where they grew up, what their parents and grandparents were like, when and where they met their spouse. To hear their story, unedited, what are they most proud of, their most cherished moments etc. I would even advise that with the advent of modern technology to video or at a minimum record these interviews for later generations. How many of us have our great grandparents or grandparents on an LP or tape? What a gift it will be to pass on an mp3 or video to our own children and grandchildren. I promise this will not be an easy task, but one that you will be thankful that you did. Rabbi Steven Abraham Yahrzeit Observances As you know, at every evening service we read the names of those whose yahrzeits (anniversary of death) are observed that day. If you will be attending Friday night service and would like the name of your loved one to be read that night, please call the synagogue office by the Wednesday preceding the service at TONI ROSEN CERTIFIED RESIDENTIAL SPECIALIST Toni.Rosen@cbshome.com Jeff and Mari Rensch 78th & Dodge Street rd & K Plaza So. 132nd Street, Suite 200 Omaha, NE Ph: Fax: th & Maple Road Voted #1 in Real Estate 4 years in a row Your West Omaha ENT & Audiology Connection Burke Street, Suite 200 Omaha, NE omahaentclinic.com JEFF MARI mari@renschgroup.com Thank you Beth El Synagogue For ad info. call Beth El Synagogue, Omaha, NE. It s hard not to as a Michigan State Spartan, even if this isn t our best year. I love the busy energy as winter thaws into spring and the way that a community comes together to support a common goal. Now that I m more involved in the Jewish world, March Madness is taking on a whole new meaning. Instead of filling out brackets and watching basketball games, I m thinking about Passover, planning programs, and helping the USYers organize and pull off a Purim Carnival. While the activities of March may have changed, I am finding that the themes are staying the same and I am finding a lot of parallels between sports life and the Omaha Jewish community. The best defense is a good offense. In August of 2016, we were struck by the refugee crisis happening in Syria and decided to be proactive and take action. Through the help and support of the community, we were able to help a family of seven resettle and start their new lives in America. Dedicated volunteers continue to help the family adjust and adapt. The Beth El community has wowed the world with our ability to stand up for those who need it. Not only were the efforts of the Welcoming the Stranger Initiative recognized by the Washington Post, but we have used that momentum to help other refugee families who have been impacted. It all started with an idea and we were able to propel it into a true mitzvah. You miss 100% of the shots you don t take. I am so lucky to work with a community that allows me to think big and in turn allows me to teach the kids to be creative and adventurous thinkers. In February, the USYers blindfolded and kidnapped the Kadima Kids. Now they are creating their own board game and who knows what they will do next. Last year we had camels at the Passover seder and this year will be even better! We have created a community where innovation is encouraged. Finally, teamwork makes the dream work. Yes, it is a cliché, but it really seems to ring true in this situation. Collaborating with the other Omaha Jewish youth groups has opened our teens up to new experiences and viewpoints. Our USYers are learning to plan programs and work together to organize the Purim Carnival. They are gaining an understanding of what it means to be a good leader and also what it means to be a good co-worker. As their coach, I am learning that it is important to use my network to help my team; even Tom Izzo doesn t work alone. Thank you for playing on Team Beth El, supporting the Woodies (Beth El s USY mascot) and your help with the Purim Carnival. Since Steph Curry hasn t sent back the membership papers I sent him, we will be relying on your support. Be an MVP and help make the Purim Carnival a slam dunk! See you on March 12! Amy Dworin

8 8 BETH EL SYNAGOGUE NEWSLETTER What is the value of time spent at Jewish summer camp or on Pilgrimage? How do we measure the impact two to six weeks spent among one s peers has on the lives of our children? Numerous studies have been conducted about the effect of Jewish summer experiences on our children. One such report, Camp Works, suggests: Camp increases the likelihood of an adult s Jewish engagement by magnitudes ranging from 5% to 55%, depending on the type of engagement. As parents of two kids who spent seven summers at Camp Herzl followed by a summer spent on USY Pilgrimage to Poland and Israel, Sally and I saw first-hand how Jewish summer experiences shaped our kids lives. But don t take my word about their experience. Naomi and Aaron speak for themselves: Pilgrimage sparked my love of Israel and kept me wanting more. Being able to spend four weeks touring the country we had learned so much about in BESTT was an amazing experience, and spending it with 40 other USYers from across the country only made it better!, Naomi said, Now when we run into each other at college functions or Hillel conventions, it's like we were just in Israel together. She continued, The same can be said about Herzl. The relationships we made have lasted far longer than our time as campers. Herzl sparked my love of being immersed in a fully Jewish environment and is the foundation of my passion President s Corner By Jim Zipursky, President of the Board of Trustees for creating a welcoming Jewish environment for everyone. Not surprisingly, Aaron has similar comments: Herzl, or for that matter, any Jewish summer camp is a 24/7 immersion in a Jewish community with Jewish kids your age and it was an invaluable experience. Camp also gives you a cool network of friends outside of Omaha. Regarding his Pilgrimage experience, Aaron said, It was great to visit Israel and Poland as a teenager, a time when I was discovering what issues I cared about and how they fit into my developing Jewish identity. Experiencing Israel amongst a group of other passionate people my own age reinforced my strong connection with and support of Israel and how important being Jewish is to me. The evidence is clear: one of the best ways for us to ensure the future of our congregation and our religion is to invest in Jewish summer camp experiences for the children of Beth El Synagogue. That conclusion is incontrovertible. Thanks to the generosity of Beth El and its Camp Scholarship Fund and through their volunteer efforts, Naomi and Aaron earned stipends to help defray the cost of their Jewish summer experiences. Each year, Beth El awards tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships and grants for Jewish summer camp or Pilgrimage. We are investing in our kids and last summer, more than 30 of our Beth El children got to experience Jewish summer camp. One of the best ways for us to ensure the future of our congregation and our religion is to invest in Jewish summer camp experiences for the children of Beth El Synagogue. On Sunday, March 26, you have an opportunity to change the lives of Beth El children as we honor the memory of Seth Rich at our annual Cantor s Concert. As most of you know, the Cantor s Concert is a fundraiser for summer camp/ summer experience scholarships and grants for the children of our congregation. The concert benefits the newly renamed Seth Rich Memorial Camp Scholarship Fund. Seth Rich, like his father, was a huge supporter of Jewish summer camps and spent many summers at Camp Ramah, as both a camper and staff member. I can think of no better way to honor Seth s memory than with your financial support of the Seth Rich Memorial Camp Scholarship Fund. Even if you cannot join us at the Cantor s Concert, I encourage no, actually I IMPLORE you to contribute to the Seth Rich Memorial Camp Scholarship Fund. Like the 70-year old man who plants trees to benefit future generations, your support of the Cantor s Concert this year and every year will help provide for Jewish summer experiences for our children, helping to build and develop Beth El and the Jewish community everywhere. Now, more than ever, we need your help and your support. Beth El Synagogue: Rooted in tradition. Embracing change. Jim Zipursky
