Her proud grandparents Lucy and Jakie Borosh of Houston, Texas; and Richard and Lois z l of Houston, Texas. Sarah is a 7th grader at Robert M. Beren Academy who enjoys art, fashion, volleyball and basketball. She is gathering gently used clothing for her mitvah project, fashion recycling, in order to provide raw materials for education and design and to reduce the stress placed upon land fills by discarded clothing. She welcomes her sibling, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends from Israel, Washington, D.C., Boston, MA, San Diego, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Chicago to share her simcha with her. We have a housing site that has been having quite a few fires and smoke-related incidents due to the residents not knowing how to utilize the stovetop properly. These are folks who have been homeless for many years and a lot of them do not know how to cook. We are looking for a few volunteers to hold a cooking education session (or a couple of sessions) at the housing site so the residents, the staff, and the Fire Department can have a well-deserved break! 11 H I G H H O L I D A Y S E C U R I T Y P R O C E D U R E S Security is inconvenient, yet necessary in order for our congregants to enjoy the highest possible level of kavanah during their davening. To ensure the safety of our congregants, our guests and our facilities, we have put some procedures in place. 1. Guards: We will have Houston Police Department and private security guards as well as volunteer ushers and synagogue staff on the premises. Please follow their instructions, as their only goal is to ensure our safety and the safety of our children during services. Please treat them with the courtesy and dignity they deserve. They are doing a very hard job. 2. Prior notice: It is UOS policy that one must make some prior arrangement with the synagogue office or the Rabbi to attend services in order to be admitted. 3. Bags: Please do not bring backpacks, large briefcases, large pocketbooks, bags, packages, etc., to the synagogue. These items will not be allowed into the sanctuary. 4. Searches: All people and items will be subject to search before entering the building. 5. Cell phones are not allowed in the Sanctuary, other than doctors on call. Please do not bring them into the synagogue. 6. Wheelchairs, walkers, etc., for those who cannot walk without them, and strollers for infants who cannot walk must be in designated rows at the rear of the sanctuary. Otherwise, they will not be allowed into the sanctuary and are to be parked in designated areas only. 7. Parking is very tight. Please park only in marked spaces and follow instructions of the officers directing traffic. Any cars parked in unauthorized spaces, or blocking access or egress from the parking lot may be ticketed or towed. 8. Children will not be allowed to roam around the parking lot. Security personnel and ushers have been instructed to direct them back to their parents. Please do not get upset with the personnel if your child is sent back to you. 9. In Case of Emergency: In the unlikely event that the synagogue needs to be evacuated due to a fire alarm, or other event, please remain calm and follow the instructions of the Rabbi, President, Ushers and security personnel. Evacuation would be done out Freedman Hall and out the Greenwillow doors and walking south on Greenwillow to Greenwillow Ct across from the retention pond. 10. Walking In the Neighborhood: Please stay on the sidewalks wherever possible and obey all traffic signs. We hope that these procedures will allow everyone to have a meaningful tefillah experience. With best wishes for a happy, healthy and safe New Year. 11

Classes run for 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 weeks, and cover many fascinating topics. Visit for details and registration. A Note From Dennis Halpin Recently, a documentary film "My Dear Children" was produced. It is a story of Jewish faith, family, and a tragedy that reverberated for generations. In this documentary, a woman travels from South Africa to the shtetl Shumsk as she pieces together her family history and learns about the Russian Civil War pogroms of The pogroms in the years following the Russian Revolution of 1917 killed tens of thousands of Jews and marked the beginning of the near-obliteration of Jewish life from an area of the world to which nearly 80% of the world's Jewry can trace its roots. Feiga Shamis, a Jewish mother of 12, wrote about those years in a rare first-hand account. What happened drove her to make a choice no mother should ever have to make. But it was a choice that ensured the survival of two of her children. Watch the trailer at Many of you remember my father and know about my father's family, but not as many of you may remember my mother or her family. My mother was born in the shtetl of Shumsk and was brought to America by her parents (my grandparents) when she was about a year old. The time period covered by this documentary is when my mother was born and her family moved to the U.S. As my mother s family was very prominent in Shumsk; they may be mentioned. My uncle, Mordechai Chazen, was the last leader of the Jewish community of Shumsk when WWII started. Until now, this documentary has only been seen in viewings in the northeast, but now it has been picked up by American Public Television (APT) for broadcast after September 4. Locally, it will be on KUHT, Channel 8. Details here: 17
