1 Temple Emanuel of Marlborough Chai Line April Nisan - 16 Iyar 5770 Volume 11.''a, rhht - ixhb Issue 9 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: From the Board School News Dates & Donations Sisterhood News Important Dates Calendar CANDLE LIGHTING TIMES SERVICES SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE SYNAGOGUE The political commentator Glenn Beck recently caused a stir when he advised Christians to leave their churches if they see the words social justice or economic justice on the church web sites or, presumably, if they hear them from the priest or minister. As you can imagine, Beck s words have galvanized both his opponents and his supporters. I don t intend to tell Christians what to do; that is not my job. But I cannot imagine applying Beck s comments to synagogue life, because social justice, or what we would call tikkun olam, the repair of the world, is so central to the life of Judaism. We see it in the double Torah portion for the final week of April, Acharei Mot-Kedoshim. Kedoshim, holy things discusses ritual obligations. But it also demands of us that we leave the corners of our fields untended for the benefit of those who lack food, that we not oppress those who work for us, that we treat people with disabilities with respect, and that we have a fair system of deciding cases. It reminds us, Love your neighbor as yourself. If these mitzvot are to be more than mere words on parchment, we are required to find ways to fulfill them in our world. Every branch of Judaism is committed to this. The Reform Movement devotes substantial resources to its Religious Action Center in Washington, where the Civil Rights Bill was drafted in the 1960s, and where advocacy work continues today. A recent story in the Jewish Forward discussed an Orthodox group that gives certification to food establishments that provide appropriate conditions for their workers. And one of the great teachers at the Conservative Movement s Jewish Theological Seminary was Abraham Joshua Heschel. Heschel was one of Martin Luther King s closest friends, and it was Heschel who persuaded King to oppose the Vietnam War. He famously remarked that when it came to injustice, Some are guilty, but all are responsible. Each of us has to form our own conclusions about how to implement the teachings of the Torah and Jewish tradition. Our religion does not require you to be either Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative. But it does require that you, that we, engage our Judaism in an effort to improve this world. In that way, we bring it a bit closer to holiness. Rabbi Thomas M. Alpert
2 Page 2 Volume 11 Issue 9 Chag Sameach to you and your family. Passover is one of my favorite Jewish Holidays with family time, a clean house and it always feels like a new beginning. Yasher co-ach to our students who so professionally helped lead our annual Model Seder. I was pleased to hear so many fluent readers. Thank you to our dedicated teachers who prepared the students. Also, Yasher co-ach to our 4-7 grade students who lead Shabbat Services in March. You are well on your way to being prepared for Bar/Bat Mitzvah. School is coming to a close in May, but not without a lot of programming before hand.. Saturday morning April 10, Shabbat Services will be led by Rabbi Alpert along with our younger students in grades K-3. Please join us for a wonderful morning followed by Kiddush sponsored by the students' families. April 11 is Kabbalat Sidur, a ceremony where all 3-5 graders will join with family for an educational morning on the study of Sidur. We will explore Keva vs Kavannah. How to find the feelings of "intention" to pray when one is simply not in that mind frame. Why pray, where to pray, and how to fit prayer into our very hectic lives. Students will be decorating Sidur covers and will receive special blessings to commemorate this special occasion in their lives. May 2 is our Israel Day nature program run by Rabbi Katy Allen. The details of this program will be outlined in future s. May 9 marks our last school day. Closing ceremonies and a fun filled morning will end around 11:40. I am sad to announce that we will be saying "goodbye" to Mrs. Perlman. She has been my dedicated teacher for 8 years as well as school mentor for 2 years. She will be missed by everyone. She and her family will remain active Temple members. I will have the pleasure of collaborating with her professionally as she is the Director of education in Burlington. Enjoy spring vacation, some well deserved time to have fun. Arlene April AM Shabbat Service led by Grade K-3 Grade K-3 Parents April 30 7:30 PM Shabbat Service Honer, Matthew Q: What types of items should I bring? A: For Friday evening oneg-kosher 2 Challah, Kosher grape juice (Kedem or Manischewitz), other beverages, fruit, pastry/cookies, milk or half & half for coffee/tea. Kiddush wine, coffee and tea bags are in the kitchen. For Saturday or holiday Kiddush-same as above plus light, cold lunch items, e.g., bagels/cream cheese, tuna, gefilte fish etc. Stroke Prevention and Awareness On Thursday, April 29, at 7:30 at Temple Emanuel of Marlborough, the Temple community will have an opportunity to hear from Judy Connelly, Nursing Educator and Stroke Coordinator at Marlborough Hospital. Ms. Connelly will speak about stroke prevention and awareness. It will be a valuable program for each of us, both to save our own lives and to help members of our families. It fulfills the Jewish obligation of pikuach nefesh, the saving of lives. This free program, open to our members and the public, is made possible by a grant to the Marlborough Hospital. The high cost of small problems: Unfortunately, our latest water bill was $400 due to a toilet that was running continuously in one of the bathrooms. It seems that the problem may have been around for a while before anyone mentioned it, so we would like to ask everyone to please alert the building committee immediately if they see any problems with the water, electricity, or other damage to our building. By letting the committee know, small problems like a leaky toilet can be addressed quickly and not turn into costly issues later. Contact Alan Moskowitz (978) , alan.moskowitz@comcast.net or David Stoll (978) , dcstoll123@verizon.net. Thanks in advance for your help.

4 Page 4 Volume 11 Issue 9 Dear Congregants, Since the new Board leadership next month, Chai Line article for a ahead marks some personally. of Directors assumes this is probably my last while. The temple year big changes for me First, since joining the temple 9 years ago, I have been on the Board every year and I have also been a teacher in our wonderful Religious School. Next year, I will not be a temple board member and I am also stepping down as a teacher in the school. Thankfully, I am not ill and I am not moving away from Marlborough and yes my family and I will continue to be active members of the temple community. I simply have too many family and professional obligations at present, and I feel it is the right time for me to step aside from the Board and from teaching. In this article, I would like to address how meaningful these two experiences have been for me. First, as a board member, and especially as a past president, I have had the opportunity to truly get to know both our membership and our leadership. I have been inspired by the strong sense of commitment and caring that the Board, the Rabbi, and the School Director have for the temple and its community. I can tell you first hand what a special group of people we have running our temple and how much I have learned from being a part of the leadership structure. Secondly, having been a teacher in the school for so many years and having had my own children attend the school, I am very proud of the work that we do here. Our students learn not only about being Jewish, how to celebrate a holiday, or how to read and pray in Hebrew, but they also learn about themselves and why it is important for each of them to be Jewish and to maintain a Jewish identity. It says in the Talmud, Sanhedrin 19B, "...one who teaches another's child Torah is regarded by the tradition as one who gave birth to the child." In the spiritual sense, I feel uniquely connected to each of the children I have taught and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to be part of their Jewish education. The Sisterhood is pleased to announce that the Cookbooks are back from the printer and have been available since Purim. We have already sold about 50 books. The books turned out even better than we could have imagined. We want to thank Blanche Vincent for her help in organizing and sorting all the recipes. Without her help we would still have a pile of papers! The books cost $9 (1/2 Chai) and make wonderful gifts. So think of all the cooks in your family that need new recipes. We will have them available at the Passover Seder and Sunday mornings at the Temple. We hope to be able to have a Cook Book Sale at one of the local banks at the end of April. Thank you to everyone who has already made a purchase. If you have not, or want additional copies, please contact Beverly at (508) and she will be happy to get one, or more, to you. The sale of the Cookbooks is a major Fund Raiser for the Sisterhood and will enable us to continue to pay for the beautiful flowers for the High Holy Days along with other purchases to help enhance our Temple. Breakfasts have expanded to two per month in order to accomodate everyone's schedules. Sunnyside in Marlboro remains the place, 9:30 A.M. remains the time. This month, we are scheduled for Tuesday April 13 Thursday April 29 Please join us if at all possible. We would love to welcome some new faces. For more Sisterhood information, Cynthia at (978) contact I look forward to many years ahead as a member of this community. I hope each of you will take my words to heart and invest yourself in our wonderful synagogue life. B'Shalom and Happy Passover, Joan Perlman
