Yes, it is still summer and the great moments of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur seem so far away. But in only a few short weeks we will be gathering with family, friends, and community to celebrate our Jewish life and identity. Of the many things that Beth Sholom Synagogue makes me proud of, none is greater than our courage to ask hard questions, and search for answers: We asked what can we do about hunger and we opened a Kosher Food Bank. We asked what can be done to help the homeless and now we house one of Toronto s largest Out of the Cold programs. We asked how can Hebrew School be made better and we launched Hebrew Connections & Shabbat Do N Learn. We asked how can Shabbat morning services be made different for a new generation and we developed Shabbat Beth Sholom. This year we asked: How can the 2 nd day of Rosh Hashanah be more than just the 2 nd day of what we did on the 1 st day? Inside this pamphlet is the answer; our comprehensive guide for our upcoming programming for the 2 nd day of Rosh Hashanah. Times, locations, and biographies of the leaders are all included. Please take a few moments to look through it and see where you might like to spend some time. In making these changes we were careful to balance those who want a traditional service, those who want their reserved seating and those who would want classes, and discussions on important Jewish and life topics that would make Day 2 different from Day 1. 2 extreme makeover Rosh Hashanah Day Two Only Edition Episode 5778! Get ready! You asked, we listened. Here are some exciting changes to your complete High Holy Day Experience at Beth Sholom. We asked ourselves How can the second day of Rosh Hashanah be MORE than just the second day of what we did on the first day? Then, we asked you. We think we ve struck a good balance and we encourage you to come and experience all that the second day of Rosh Hashanah has to offer. Here s what s different for day two ONLY: Reserved seating is suspended in all services until 10:20 am. (for day two only) Everyone is invited to join Rabbi Flanzraich and Rabbi Moscowitz for an alternative learning session in the Assembly Hall from 9:30 am -10:20 am, then return to their designated service at 10:30 am for the Shofar and Mussaf service. Those who would prefer to participate in a full traditional service have the option of sitting in the Banquet Hall or Sanctuary. (There will be no services in the Assembly Hall until 10:30 am) Reserved seating resumes throughout the building at 10:20 am, for Shofar Blowing & Mussaf. We have added opportunities for alternate learning on all the days of the High Holy Days with Rabbi Julia Appel in the Boardroom and a special alternative learning session exclusive for day two only, with Rabbis Flanzraich & Moscowitz, in the Assembly Hall. Now, more than ten years running, our Family Service is a thoughtfully modified and shorter service to provide families with children ages 12 and under a unique kid-friendly synagogue experience, with plenty of opportunities for participation. Tashlich Thursday september 21 at 6:00 pm SHARP! תשליך Join Rabbi Flanzraich as we symbolically cast our sins into the water! Tashlich comes from the Hebrew word to cast. Usually performed on the first day of Rosh Hashanah (unless it falls on Shabbat), Tashlich is the symbolic act of casting your sins and transgressions into the water, by emptying your pockets of bread crumbs into a body of water (preferably one with fish). 6 Sholom Kids SHANA TOVA! Shanah Tova U Metukah to our Sholom Kids and all youth and families at Beth Sholom Synogogue. Our Youth Program Room names are back! Check out which rooms your little ones will be in this year! Honey bee rooms AGES: 0-5 LOCATION: Playtime (0-2) & Teperman (3-5) In our Nursery and Pre-School rooms, children will explore the joy of the High Holy Days through song, movement, and games. Healthy snacks and drinks will be provided on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Gefilte fish room AGES: 6-7 LOCATION: School Wing In our room for 6-7 year olds, children will get moving using their hands. Various building materials will be provided for children to build their own mini synagogues. Bobbing for apples, smelling different foods, tasting different types of honeys, and looking at different species of honey bees are a few of the activities we have planned for this age group. apple room AGES: 8-10 LOCATION: School Wing In our room for 8-10 years olds, children will be challenged in an age-appropriate way. In this age group, students will practice some t filah with the room leaders, paying special attention to the prayers which are particular to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. SHOFAR room AGES: LOCATION: School Wing As children approach Bar and Bat Mitzvah age, they are encouraged to reflect more deeply on their actions and are asked to make commitments for the year to come. Children in this age group will learn about the ways Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are celebrated in different parts of the world. This age group will then participate in our own version of tashlich using a kiddie pool. Don t forget to bring your child s ticket! Youth Programs run from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm on Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur and during Kol Nidre from 6:30pm-8:30pm Your child s ticket, not only indicates the room your child will be in, but they help us keep track of the little ones in the program. We will keep your child s ticket when you drop them off and return their ticket once you ve picked them up. Your childs safety is very important to us. Choose your own TEEN High Holy Day Experience This year we want you to choose how to experience your High Holy Days. Check out your options below! A OR B Purchase a ticket Purchase a regular ticket and attend services with your family. This option is ideal for teens who feel ready to be a part of the greater community in prayer and reflection. apply as a youth volunteer We want to hear from you! Send Alexa a personal letting her know why you should be a youth volunteer with our Sholom Kids. This position is ideal for teens who love working with kids or who wish to work in an administrative capacity during the High Holy Days. You will receive 15 community service hours upon successful completion. OR C sign up for our new teen learning program! You will be engaged in a learning session where you will be praying and reflecting on the High Holy Days as well as focusing on social justice issues facing our community. In addition to attending the program, teens will commit to a minimum one additional day of Jewish community service during the year. (There are tons of opportunities at Beth Sholom and around the Jewish community to help out!) You will receive 15 community service hours upon successful completion of the program. TEENS! He is very actively involved with the B nai Mitzvah students and has created a cohesive community experience through the Bar/Bat Mitzvah family program. Cantor Moses is passionate about producing high quality musical events for Beth Sholom and the broader Jewish community. Stay tuned for details of his 18 th anniversary concert in Cantor Moses is currently the president of the Toronto Council of Hazzanim. This is a distinct honour of recognition a m o n g s t colleagues who have recognized his leadership qualities and service to his community. Rabbi Janice Elster was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio where she also received a Masters in Hebrew Letters. She has worked with college students at Hillel at the University of Pennsylvania and young adults, at the Jewish Federation of San Diego. She has worked with children, adults and families of all ages as an educator and is passionate Rabbi Julia Appel is the Senior Jewish Educator and Campus Rabbi at University of Toronto Hillel, where she develops formal and informal educational and ritual opportunities with UofT students, creates interfaith connections on campus, and coaches student leaders. Originally from Boston, Rabbi Julia previously served at Amherst College and MIT Hillels in Massachusetts, Chazzan David Edwards was born and raised in the UK where he spent his formative years, living in a traditional Jewish home. It was only much later in life that he found his calling as a cantor and began studying formally following the death of his mother in Following this intense period of study he became the Chazzan of the Lodzer Centre Congregation in In 2009 he moved onto a position at the Beth Tzedec He is co-founder of the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem and he has taught Talmud and Halacha there for twenty years. He is the author of two books, The Schechter Haggadah: Art, History and Commentary and Reconstructing the Talmud. He also teaches Talmud on a daily basis to over 1500 students through the Daf Shevui program. Dr. Kulp made Aliyah in Currently Rabbi Emeritus of Holy Blossom, John Moscowitz served the congregation for twenty five years ( ), the last twelve as Sr. Rabbi. The author of Evolution of An Unorthodox Rabbi (Dundurn 2015), Rabbi Moscowitz is writing a memoir about his days as a young radical (early 70s) in Venice, California. Various published articles Meni Philip is an Israeli film-maker. Before leaving the Israeli Haredi community at the age of 32, he was a popular recording artist and performer of popular Chassidic music in the ultra-orthodox Israeli community. Meni served as a chief Chazzan at Brith Olam congregation in Israel for 9 years before moving Cantor Schindel is a graduate of the Cantorial Training Institute of Yeshiva University (now the Belz School of Music). A student of voice, cantorial recitatives and solfeggio with Guilio Gari, a former Metropolitan Opera tenor, as well as with the world-renowned Cantor Moshe Taube. Cantor Schindel performed with the Shema Koleinu band and was a child soloist with High Holy Day choirs. He has been a yearly cantor at Congregation Poale Zedeck, Pittsburgh, PA, and the rabbi janice elster director OF ENGAGEMENT & FAMILY LEARNING, beth SHOLOM SYNAGOGUE about helping people find ways to meaningfully engage with Judaism. She is married to Rabbi Michael Satz and has two beautiful boys, Eitan and Ammiel. She is very excited to help families engage with Jewish life at Beth Sholom. Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom and Congregation Dorshei Emet in Montreal, and Makom Afterschool in Toronto. She holds a B.A., Magna Cum Laude, from Harvard University, and Rabbinic Ordination and an M.A. in Jewish Studies from Hebrew College. RABBI JULIA APPEL Cantor David Edwards Congregation in Calgary, but returned back to Toronto to serve the Beth Emeth Congregation from He is looking forward to meaningful High Holy Day services at Beth Sholom. DR. JOSHUA KULP 1994 and lives in Modiin with his wife, Julie Zuckerman and their four children. An avid triathlete and runner, he has completed three Ironmans, ten marathons and fifteen half-ironmans. A talented singer, he is also an Optometric Physician practicing in New Jersey and New York.

8 enhance your experience SYNAGOGUE DRESS CODE Please be respectful of our synagogue dress code. Our Ushers work very hard to maintain decorum and ensure all guests are being respectful. Men should be wearing Kippot during all services. Ladies, please be vigilant in making sure skirts and dresses are of modest length, just above or knee length is preferable. Shoulders should also be covered at all times during services. electronics are prohibited We do not permit the use of cellphones, texting, filming, ing, ipads or other wireless devices in the synagogue throughout Shabbat, on all High Holy Days and Yom Tovim. CLERGY ROTATIONS In order to accommodate our members who occupy seats in any of our three main minyanim, our clergy officiate in various locations on different days of Yom Tov. Please note that the Traditional Choir and the Ruach Singers follow Rabbi Flanzraich and Cantor Moses to each location. Rabbi Flanzraich and Cantor Moses are in the Sanctuary on the 1 st day of Rosh Hashanah, in the Assembly Hall on the 2 nd day of Rosh Hashanah, in the Sanctuary for Kol Nidre and in the Banquet Hall for Yom Kippur morning. Please note that while we have applied for parking consideration, anyone who is parked in such a way may be ticketed for this infraction. This year, we will have our yahrzeit plaque dedication program during Selichot. Our plaque dedication honours the memory of lost loved ones throughout the year. Selichot is a time of reflection and repentance. As we prepare for Rosh Hashanah, we are reminded of the year that is ending, remembering those we have lost and what we can do to be better people in the coming year. The music and liturgy of our selichot and dedication service will help inspire you as we set the tone for this years High Holy Days. Conversation should take place outside the Sanctuaries. Any person coming up to the bimah must have their head and shoulders covered and women s dresses should be of modest length.
