2 Volume 71, No. 4 HANUKKAH December 2018 Temple Beth El Page 2 MESSAGE FROM RABBI RAMI Reflections After the Pittsburgh Attack on October 27 th, 2018 By Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky On Monday, October 29 th, only two days after the Pittsburgh massacre, we held a special ceremony at Temple Beth El. It was a necessary and moving experience for all of us who attended it. Below you will find the reflections I shared that evening. The Torah reading for last Saturday morning was about the life of our patriarch Abraham. We read, for example, that when God called Abraham he answered, hineni, here I am. Tonight we are all here to say, here we are. Here we are, horrified, heartbroken, shocked. And here we are, confused, anxious, puzzled. But here we are, united, determined, unintimidated. Yes, here we are But why are we gathered here? I believe the best answer is that we are here because we need to be here, together. At this hour, we need to be here, in our Temple, in our synagogue. We need to express what we feel, we need to listen to what others say, we need to be heard. And we need to cry, perhaps silently, but together First of all, our hearts go out to the families of the victims of the antisemitic attack last Shabbat at Tree of Life Congregation in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh. May God comfort them. Our prayers go out to those who were wounded in the attack, may God send them refuah shleima, complete healing. We thank the first responders for their brave response to this emergency. We also thank the local people and organizations who reached out to us to send their condolences and condemn this barbaric attack. Leaders and simple people who belong to Churches, Mosques, police, business and neighbors in general. Some of them are here with us tonight. It is so comforting to know that our neighbors feel this way and that we have their support. Thank you. Eleven people were killed by a person who bitterly hated Jews. A person who freely posted on social media antisemitic messages along with pictures of his gun collection. And even after the attack he told a policeman that, "they're committing genocide to my people. I just want to kill Jews. Eleven people were killed last Saturday morning only because they were Jews, because they were praying and celebrating Shabbat. They gathered at Congregation Tree of Life, named after the verse from the Book of Proverbs we sing every time we return the Torah to the ark, Etz Chaim Hi, It is a tree of life for those who grasp it. There was a brit milah in the synagogue that morning, people were at the Tree of Life receiving a new life. That is a wonderful metaphor for Judaism, because the Jewish tradition is a tradition that celebrates life. However, during this weekly encounter to celebrate life, eleven people found death. This act of baseless hatred is more than random violence; it runs counter to everything we believe in, as individuals and as a people. It runs against Judaism, against the best values of this country, and against human life. Yesterday morning there was a field trip sponsored by the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster, JCAL. Ten of our students, along with twenty other students from Congregation Sharai Shomayim, went to visit Ellis Island. This was a great opportunity for our children, because, as we know, many of our grandparents and great grandparents entered the United States through Ellis Island. They came mainly from Eastern Europe, trying to make true the American dream. This was a dream about wealth and financial stability, no doubt about that. But far more important, it was a dream about living in a free country where your beliefs are respected and even appreciated, where your individual rights are esteemed and kept, where the government, the judges and the police work to serve and protect you, where you can live in peace. That was unheard-of to them, because in the old country they were used to being harassed and blamed for any problem, and they lived with the constant fear of insult or attack, only because they were Jewish. Let me tell you at once, their dream came true. Not because all of them became rich, but because they found a land of peace, respect, acceptance, tolerance and openness as they had never known before. Nor had their ancestors, for centuries. Even with all the enormous challenges they faced in the new country, they found on this soil a society that respected their right to practice their customs and beliefs. That dream, which came true in America, was attacked last Saturday morning in Pittsburgh. And even while democracy, freedom and the great institutions of this country are strong and will not be affected significantly by a single tragedy, it was still a shocking blow. It was a blow to that dream of our grandparents, and to the dream of new immigrants like me, who thought that something like this could never happen in this country. This was an attack to the Jewish community in America, this was an (Continued on page 3)

3 Volume 71, No. 4 HANUKKAH December 2018 Temple Beth El Page 3 (Continued from page 2) attack to the Jewish people around the world. Yes, this was pure antisemitism. But it was also an attack to the esteemed values of this country. Any attack to a minority group must be considered an attack to the whole country. What should be our response to this attack? Right now, this is the time for mourning, condolences, sympathy and prayers. But what should we do in the near future, how should we respond as a community and as a society in order to avoid a senseless tragedy like this one from happening again? Let me share with you some ideas, 1) We will need to review our security and improve it. It is very important for us to be welcoming and reflect an open-door congregation. At the same time, protecting ourselves is a first concern and responsibility. Unfortunately, the hostile climate in which we live, the fact that antisemitism is on the rise here and in many parts of the world, and the fact that it is so easy to legally acquire lethal weapons, oblige us to rethink our security. The leadership of Temple Beth El is already working on how to keep us safe in our building, so we can continue celebrating Jewish life in peace, without renouncing our commitment to being open and welcoming. 2) More than ever before, we need to be together as Jews. We need to show the world that we will not be intimidated by terror, that we will continue gathering in our synagogues and schools, and we will continue living according to our identity, our beliefs and our values. 3) As a society, we need to review how we handle our differences. The deep climate of divisiveness we live in and the escalating rhetoric of hate we witness, certainly do not contribute to calming the spirits. Rather, they seem to inspire small groups that bear the flag of hatred and extremism. We must demand that our leaders promote civility and healthy public discussion, based on respect and listening. Hate groups must be repudiated, isolated and denounced. Respectful debate must be encouraged. 4) The country needs to start an adult discussion about gun violence and gun control. There is so much to say about this topic, but tonight let me only say one thing. It is not tolerable that a single person, with some possible mental health issues, one who freely and publicly posted extreme hate messages against a minority group, can cause so much harm and death so quickly, because he uses a weapon of war bought legally for personal use. In olden times, if you sought to cause such damage, you needed a big group of hateful people, one prepared with resources. Today you only need one sick person. It has happened so many times recently. How can a society still allow it? 5) We need to denounce antisemitism and demand from authorities that they do their job in fighting it. We also need to support other minority groups when they are discriminated or attacked. When a person or a group is terrorized because of religious belief, race, ethnic identity or gender, we as Jews need to express solidarity and speak up against hate and discrimination. As we studied last Shabbat, at the same time that a despicable man was trying to kill as many Jews as he could, God knew that Abraham commands his sons and his household after him, that they should keep the way of the Lord to perform righteousness and justice. It is our responsibility as Jews to stand up where injustice is found. And what could be more unfair than allowing people to act on their hatred of others because of their beliefs, their looks, or who they are? The core value of this nation is that people of every race or religion are endowed with the same inalienable rights. When this core value is attacked, we must speak up, regardless of what group is the target of attack. We need to be one as a nation against hatred and discrimination. I would like to close my words with two messages. First, I quote the words of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, "The world is a very narrow bridge and so the most essential thing is not to be afraid. As Jews we stand together, we are brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, we are very experienced in being hated and attacked. But together we are stronger, and we will not be intimidated. We will continue living according to our tradition, customs and values, and we will continue trying to live by righteousness and justice. To be concerned is natural, even healthy. Now, together, we will overcome fear and show the world that here we stand. Second, we are blessed to live in a country where our great grand parents found peace and respect, democracy and freedom. The values and institutions of this nation are powerful. The great majority of society wants to live in peace and acceptance. In these past two days since the attack, we have received so many messages of condolences and support from our neighbors, regardless of their religious beliefs, race or political affiliation. I find this very comforting and encouraging. But now is the time for us to mourn the victims and pray for the recovery of those who were wounded. For supporting the Pittsburgh Jewish community and their grieving families. For sending our prayers and condolences. And we do it beiachad, together. Hineni, here I am! Here we are!
