3 Volume 67, No. 8 PASSOVER April 2015 Temple Beth El Page 3 RABBI S MESSAGE I am sure that it would never occur to most of us to count, word by word, the number of words in a book! I don t think any of us would have the time or patience to physically go through an entire book, laboriously counting every word! Nowadays, all this can now be done easily with a computer. But just imagine if, out of some masochistic streak, we did manage to physically count the words of an entire book, we then started all over again to figure what was the middle word of the book! Well, that is exactly what the rabbis did. So great was their reverence for, and love of, the Torah that the rabbis of the post- Talmudic era known as the Masoretes the group of scholars who fixed and guarded the accurate text of the Torah and set all the rules concerning its transmission counted all the words in the Torah and ascertained where the middle of the Torah was located. According to the rabbis the middle of the Torah is to be found in parashat Shemini. The middle word or group of words occurs in Leviticus 10:16 in the verse And Moses diligently inquired, darosh darash [Moshe]. It is a remarkable coincidence that the middle words of the Torah happen to be these two words, darosh darash (an infinitive absolute ), which means something like diligently inquired, or inquired exceedingly. A coincidence though this may be, it has been suggested, with good reason, that these two words express a whole philosophy of Judaism. At the very heart of the Torah is the idea that the revealed word of God is more than what appears on the surface. Diligent inquiry for the purpose of deeper understanding and ever-fresh application of the message of the Torah is not a mere option, but is the essence of the Torah. An entire body of literature known as the Midrash is none other than looking beyond the surface of the Torah in order to look deeper at the text and examine the text from every possible perspective. Not only that, but the very word Midrash denotes inquiry, searching for the truth, studying the inner meaning of the Biblical texts and their further application to life. The word Midrash is, in fact, derived from the same root, darash, to inquire. Nothing illustrates Judaism s openendedness and insistence on asking questions how, what or why perhaps more than the Passover Seder. The key opening passage in the Seder is that of the Four Questions, the Mah nishtanah. Four simple questions but no simple answers. The Haggadah takes its time in trying to answer the questions completely. In Judaism the asking of questions is perhaps more important than actually finding the answers. Further, the questions of one generation are not necessarily those of a later generation just as the answers of one generation are not necessarily those of a later generation. This we see in the evolution of the Passover Seder itself. The Four Questions that were asked in the time of the Mishnah, which presents the questions in the context of the Temple, are somewhat different from those that were incorporated into the Haggadah when the Temple was no more. This phrase, darosh darash (to be read from the Torah on the Shabbat following Passover), serves as a wonderful and beautiful way of describing the authentic character of Judaism, Jewish culture, and the ideal Jew. May its spirit permeate and enliven our Passover seders. Wishing everyone a ḥag kasher ve- Notice regarding Hospitalization Please remember that the hospitals no longer contact us or volunteer information about congregants who are hospitalized. 4 Volume 67, No. 8 PASSOVER April 2015 Temple Beth El Page 4 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It takes a shtetl. It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a shtetl to raise a Jewish community, to be a Jewish community, to be a synagogue and to keep a synagogue going. You have read messages from me in the past with similar themes; that it takes our entire congregation to make Temple Beth El the synagogue that we want and need it to be. This is true now more than ever. In the immediate future you will be hearing from several people who will be asking for you to accept a role in helping to keep Temple Beth El the vibrant community that it has grown to be. Here are your options to participate and help us grow. Nominating Committee Joanne Goldfarb, Chair Joanne Goldfarb is chairing the Nominating Committee. She, or one of the other four members of the Committee will be seeking members to serve on the Temple Board and to fill the two Executive Committee vacancies. Currently, the 1 st and 2 nd Vice President positions are unfilled. This means that we need people to fill the remaining one year of the term for each of these positions. This is a golden opportunity to try out an Executive position with only a one year commitment instead of the usual two year s commitment. Rabbis Transition Team Plus - Hal Koplin, Chair We are getting closer to the time when we foresee Rabbis Pavolotzky and Szuster and their family coming to Temple Beth El. Hal Koplin is chairing the Transition Team. The Team will consist of a core few who will need the help of others to provide the Rabbis with the assistance that they will need to acclimate to their new community, and country. You will be the plus who will provide the much needed extra aid. Please be generous with your time. Temple Beth El 12 th Annual Jewish Food Festival - Sherry Ostroff Chair, Michele Matlin, Volunteer Coordinator Our 12 th Annual Jewish Food Festival will be held on Sunday, May 3, from 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. We have a very hard working Food Festival Committee which has been working tirelessly to make this happen. An incredible amount of food has been and continues to be cooked by our industrious volunteers. But there is more to do, and we need all of you to do it. The March Temple Bulletin contained a form for you to fill out to volunteer your time to help to set up for the Food Festival and to work on the Food Festival. There is also the request for you to provide Passover-related objects for our sanctuary presentation: Seder plates, Elias s cups, afikomen bags, unusual Hagaddot, etc. Congregational s remind you with comparable volunteer requests. In addition, by the time that you read this article, you will have received the Food Festival tickets that we ask all of our members to buy/sell. We all know people to whom we could sell our tickets neighbors, people the various organizations and clubs to which we belong, Jewish and" non-jewish alike. Everyone enjoys a good meal. Our tickets make wonderful gifts, as well. Remember, this is our major fundraiser. By selling and buying tickets yourself and by volunteering your time, you can make this a truly wonderful Food Festival experience for everyone. Temple Beth El s Bar Mitzvah, Fall 2015 Steve Gordon, Chair Believe it or not, Temple Beth El is going to have a Bar Mitzvah. We will be in our new building for 13 years. This fall, at a date to be finalized, but probably in early November, we will celebrate with a wonderful weekend. In addition, we will be installing the long anticipated panels of stained glass windows. We will need volunteers to help with a wide variety of activities for the weekend, from services to food to programming. When you are called upon to volunteer, please, just say yes. All of the above is in addition to everything else that goes on at Temple Beth El. The Adult Programming and Beth Pomerantz Education Series, Men s Club, Sisterhood, the Religious School, not to mention services. Please help us to keep everything happening. PASSOVER If anyone has room for invitees at your Seder, or if anyone is looking for a Seder to attend, please contact the office and we will try to match you up. Please indicate if you keep/desire a strictly kosher home, or if you follow/ find acceptable kosher for Passover style (no leaven, but you don t change dishes). Status update on the arrival of Rabbis Rami Pavolotzky and Daniela Szuster. We were notified by the US Customs and Immigration Service (USCIS) that the Requests For Evidence (RFE) for both Rabbi Pavolotzky (regarding our IRS Sec. 501(c)(3) status as a charitable institution which we obtained) and Rabbi Szuster (regarding our IRS Sec. 501(c)(3) status and our need for an Associate Rabbi) were timely filed. USCIS will request a Temple Beth El site visit, which is standard procedure, and issue a determination by May 1, Once we receive a positive determination, the Rabbis will have to have an interview in Costa Rica and apply for their visas. The Board of Directors has extended the time by when the Rabbis contracts need to start from March 31 to July 31, We have asked the Rabbis, and they have agreed, to provide us with 30 days notice of when they will be able to start at Temple Beth El, both to allow the Rabbis time to prepare for their move and to provide appropriate notice to Rabbi Goldberg. Jeff and I wish you a happy Pesach. Dolly

Our school's annual Passover Model Seder is being held on March 29, which is always fun for the kids and helps them to prepare and learn more about the seder when they celebrate at home. The Religious School wanted to say Thank you to the Temple Beth El Sisterhood for hosting a wonderful Shabbat dinner on March 20th before our Religious School led Friday services. And for the Rabbi's help in making it every special for all that attended. Please see this bulletin or the Temple Website for upcoming calendar of events. We also would like to congratulate Matthew Leichter and his family on the wonderful service held on March 28 as he was called to the Torah in honor of his Bar Mitzvah. Thank you the Religious School students for helping to lead that weekends Friday night service. Also, if you can no longer drive at night, and need a ride to services, please let us know. We also provide phone calls to check up on a person s well being if they are alone and in need of this reassurance. Our mission is to be there for congregants in need. We can only do that if you let us know of a situation where we can be of assistance. All information shared is confidential and limited to the committee members. 7 Volume 67, No. 8 PASSOVER April 2015 Temple Beth El Page 7 BETH POMERANTZ EDUCATION SERIES and Temple Beth El proudly present Rabbi Lance Sussman Father Abraham: Lincoln and the Jews Abraham Lincoln was a remarkable friend to the Jews, especially during the Civil War. President Lincoln personally did more to bring Jews and Judaism into the mainstream than any President since Washington. By reversing both the prohibition on Jewish chaplains in the American Army and reversing Grant's expulsion order, he helped move Jews and Judaism incrementally toward the center of the American experience. Rabbi Sussman's visual presentation will discuss President Lincoln's extraordinary relationship with American Jews. ABOUT RABBI SUSSMAN Rabbi Sussman, Ph.D. is Senior Rabbi of Keneseth Israel Synagogue in Elkins Park, PA. He currently teaches Jewish History at Princeton and Temple University and offers classes at the National Museum of American Jewish History. He has written several books in the field of American Jewish history, is published in major print and online publications and is featured in several PBS television documentaries on Jewish life in America. Previously, Rabbi Sussman served as Chair of the Jewish Studies Department at Binghamton University-SUNY and offered courses in Jewish History at Hebrew Union College in New York City and Rutgers University. 13 Volume 67, No. 8 PASSOVER April 2015 Temple Beth El Page 13 Bedikat Hametz The traditional search for Hametz takes place on the 14th of Nisan, at night. This year the search for Hametz will take place on Thursday evening, April 2, after sundown. The symbolic search serves as the last chance to find any undiscovered Hametz in your house. Pieces of bread or other Hametz are placed around the house. A berakhah, found in the front of most Haggadot, is recited before the search begins. The search is conducted by candlelight, using a feather to brush crumbs into a wooden spoon. After the berakhah, is recited, all remain silent until the search is completed. The hametz is collected, piece by piece, with the feather and the spoon, and then disposed of (usually by burning) with other Hametz the next morning. This ritual reminds us of how the search was conducted in the years before other means of lighting our homes became available. After the search is concluded, a declaration is recited annulling any Hametz remaining in one's possession. Removal of hametz and bedikat hametz must be done in all rooms where food is eaten as well as one s car (if you eat there) and office. Remember to count the number of pieces of hametz set out for the search to make sure you find all of them. If you are searching with small children, consider using a flashlight rather than a candle. Removing Hametz All hametz must be removed from one s domain by the 14th of Nisan. The latest time for eating hametz is 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 3rd. Any remaining hametz must be removed and the formula for annulling hametz must be recited no later than 12:04 p.m. Selling Hametz One may not have leaven in his/her legal possession during Pesach. The practice of mekhirat hametz was instituted so that ownership of hametz could be legally transferred to a non-jew. The procedure is as follows. Those who wish to sell their leaven sign their names to a special form giving the Rabbi power of attorney for this purpose and authorize the Rabbi to act on their behalf. The authorization empowers the Rabbi to sell the leaven they own, and the place where it is stored, at terms that he or she sees fit. The Rabbi then sells the leaven to a non-jew by means of a special document which contains all the terms of the sale. At the conclusion of Pesach, the Rabbi buys it back.

14 Volume 67, No. 8 PASSOVER April 2015 Temple Beth El Page 14 SALE OF HAMETZ I/we, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Geoffrey Goldberg to act in my/our behalf to sell all hametz possessed by me/us knowingly or unknowingly as defined by Torah and rabbinic law, and to lease all places wherein hametz owned may be found. This transaction will be in effect for the duration of Pesah, which this year begins with sundown of Friday, April 3, 2015 (candlelighting 7:13 p.m.; sunset 7:31 p.m.); and runs through Saturday/Shabbat, April 11, 2015; ending at 8:21 p.m.). And to this I/we hereby affix my/our signature(s) on this day of, in the year NAME(S) ADDRESS(ES) STORAGE LOCATION(S) SIGNATURE(S) The latest time you can present your sale of Hametz form is Friday morning, April 3rd, at 10:30 a.m., at Temple Beth El. You can also mail your form to the Temple: 1836 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster, PA Which must be received by THURSDAY, APRIL 2ND. Ma ot Hittin It is customary to contribute to a communal fund before Pesach in order that everyone can afford a kosher Pesach. Contributions may be made to the Rabbi s Discretionary Fund (in the memo line write Ma ot Hittin).
