Women of Reform Judaism strengthens the voice of women and empowers them to create caring communities, cultivate personal and spiritual growth, and promote Reform Jewish values to ensure a vibrant future. - Blair C. Marks, WRJ President
WHO WE ARE Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) engages tens of thousands of women through a global network of hundreds of sisterhoods to advance Reform Jewish values. Stronger together, we make sure the voices of progressive women are heard in order to make a difference in the world. INSPIRED BY THE PAST. COMMITTED TO THE FUTURE. Founded in 1913 as an affiliate of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), WRJ represents the collective voice and presence of women in congregational life, providing opportunities for Reform Jewish women to connect with one another, cultivate leadership, and mobilize our communities for social change. We support Jewish ideals and enhance the quality of Jewish living to ensure the future of Progressive Judaism in North America, Israel, and around the world.
Strengthening the voice of Women Reform Jewish women are activists. Summoning the power of thousands of women, WRJ works to secure a better world for the next generation. In order to make real the vision of a better world, WRJ: Adopts resolutions on public policy issues that apply our progressive values to issues of the day. seeking to preserve access to Engages a legislative assistant at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) who provides critical updates and context to pending legislation and important judicial cases. Signs onto amicus briefs and position letters to government officials to assure that WRJ s positions are represented in the halls of power. vulnerable around the world and Works globally as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) at the United Nations in collaboration with other women s groups and Jewish organizations to bring progressive ideals to the world stage. Supports the work of the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC), Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism (IMPJ), Women of the Wall (WOW), and nearly 30 Reform women s groups in Israel to advance religious pluralism and gender equality in Israel. A hundred years ago, our founders were suffragists; today, we continue the struggle for women s rights, reproductive services, affordable We reach out to the needy and address critical issues including global poverty, civil rights, immigration reform, and LGBTQ rights.
Connecting Jewish Women Around the World As an umbrella for hundreds of Reform women s groups, WRJ brings together women from around the world to learn from one another, develop deep personal relationships, create a joyful community of faith and have fun! At the biennial WRJ Assembly, women hear from Reform Movement leaders, experience energizing worship, attend learning sessions, and establish priorities for the future. The WRJ Fried Leadership Conference provides learning opportunities for leaders to sharpen their skills in areas such as membership recruitment, governance, fundraising, public speaking, and new program models while sharing and collaborating with other sisterhood leaders. North American sisterhoods are organized into eight WRJ Districts, which each hold biennial conventions where women study and worship together, share best practices, and learn from WRJ leaders, scholars, and experts. WRJ Districts also provide Area Events to bring together neighboring sisterhoods for special programs. WRJ s global network includes women s groups in Israel, South Africa, and South America, which are all part of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ). WRJ s world-wide network connects through international conferences and periodic mission trips.
Nurturing Spiritual Growth and Deepening Jewish Engagement Through WRJ, Reform women have created a unique and vibrant role for women in congregational life and found their spiritual voice. To foster women s Jewish growth, WRJ: Brings new program ideas to sisterhoods, such as the PJ Library Program, WRJ Or Ami Programming Awards, WRJ Lilith Salons, and programmatic tools geared toward military families and college-age women. Creates resources to introduce women s rituals and enhance Jewish celebrations, such as holiday guides, creative worship services, and Rosh Chodesh resources. Publishes collections of women s prayers, poetry, and meditations. Produced The Torah: A Women s Commentary, with study guides for each parashah. Creates an annual WRJ Art Calendar.
Cultivating the Next Generation of Reform Jewish Leaders Through the YES (Youth, Education, and Special Projects) Fund and other philanthropic efforts, WRJ provides hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to educate Reform professionals, advance women s leadership, and build Reform institutions. Recent grants include: Student scholarships at Reform seminaries around the word, including Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in North America and Israel, Leo Baeck College in London, and Abraham Geiger College in Potsdam, Germany. WRJ-URJ PJ Library Partnership and Campaign for Youth Engagement. North American Federation of Temple Youth s (NFTY) 75th Anniversary Campaign, Mitzvah Corps programs, and special events at NFTY Conventions. Youth scholarships for the NFTY-EIE Israel high school exchange program and the URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy. Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) and Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) social justice efforts. Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism s (IMPJ) Bat Mitzvah Initiative. Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) for its World Zionist Organization campaign efforts. Women of the Wall for its Rosh Chodesh siddur, which is used by hundreds of women monthly, including WRJ women, in prayer at the Western Wall.
