3 Newsletter - March BASANTA UTSAB Basanta Utsab ( also called Dol Jatra or Holi) means the Celebration of Spring / Festival of Colour which usually celebrated in March which is Falgun and Chaitra according to the Bengali calendar. During this season nature shows its own beauty with colorful flowers of Palash, Shimul etc. The beautiful tradition of celebrating spring festival in Bengal was first started by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. Basant Utsav is no different from Holi, except for the gracefulness with which it is celebrated. In Bengal and Orissa, Dol Purnima or Dol Jatra is a major festival. This festival is dedicated to Sri Krishna. On this auspicious day, an image of Krishna, richly adorned and besmeared with colored powder (Abir in Bengali), is taken out in procession, in a swinging palanquin, decorated with flowers, leaves, colored clothes and papers. The procession proceeds forward to the accompaniment of music, blaring of conch shells, trumpets and shouts of 'Jai' (victory). Dol Purnima becomes all the more significant for Bengalis, because this is also the birthday of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The colourful Holi festival is not only an obsession for the Hindus it has attracted many people from various nations of the world. Holi knows no bars, Holi knows no boundaries too. Across the world wherever Indians or people of Indian origin are present Holi is celebrated with gusto and bonhomie. People play with colours, light a bonfire called Holika and celebrate the victory of good over evil.

4 Newsletter - March THE FESTIVAL OF COLOURS ACROSS THE WORLD One of the most colourful, playful festivals ever, Holi draws revellers from all corners of not just India, but all corners of the globe, too Holi in Australia : Several events are organized all over in Australia where people play with non-toxic colours.the Holi festival in Australia is an opportunity for the people of Australia to deepen their understanding of the Hindu religion which is a way of giving a warm welcome to the season of spring and saying good bye to the darkness of the winters. Holi in New Zealand : Holi is celebrated with lot of mirth and excitement in New Zealand which has a large number of Indians. Auckland, Wellington, Christ Church, Hamilton cities celebrates plays Holi with delicacies like bara, gulgula, phulourie, bigany, mango or tamarind chutney, potato ball, prasad, channa, ghoja, mahambhoog, kheer or sweet rice, among others beverage are prepared and served at the Isckon temples where large Holi gatherings takes place. Holi in London : There are annual Holi celebrations, complete with coloured powders, and water. Holi in Bangladesh : Though the country is Muslim dominated, Hindus too celebrate their festivals with gaiety. Holi in Canada : Canada being a country where a large number of Indian populations reside, the celebration of the festival of Holi is very common. In 2016, not only it was celebrated by the residents but the year witnessed an unusual festive mood on Holi, when the parliamentarian complex of Canada celebrated the festival for the first time in which assortments of members of the parliament joined the celebration. The members from the Indo-Canadian community specifically participated to honour this festival of celebration. Holi in USA : With a large population of Indians settled in the United States of America, Holi is celebrated with gaiety and lot of fanfare in this country. Here Holi parades are taken out. People can be seen having so much fun in these parades as they play with the colour in the midst. There is so much revelry here that it becomes difficult to imagine that New York is not a part of India. Bollywood actors also take time out to celebrate Holi with the people of USA doubling the excitement for the festival. Dance performance, fashion shows and music concerts further add to the festive spirit.

6 Newsletter - March MIND-BLOWING FACTS ABOUT THE MONTH OF MARCH 1. Welcome to the third month of the year or, if you were born before 1752, the first! According to the oldest Roman calendars, one year was ten months long, beginning in March and ending in December. It may sound crazy, but you can still see traces of this old system in our modern calendar: because December was the tenth month, it was named for the number ten in Latin (decem), just like September was named for seven 2. March was actually named for the Latin Martius aka Mars, the Roman God of war and a mythical ancestor of the Roman people. With the winter frosts melting and the ground becoming fertile for harvest again in the Northern hemisphere, March was historically the perfect month for both farmers to resume farming, and warriors to resume warring. 3. The birthstone for March is aquamarine and the flowers are the daffodil or violet. 7. People born in the beginning and middle of March are Pisces while those from March 21 onward are Aries, which are ruled by Mars symbolizing energy. 8. March 21 is the anniversary of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey inaugurating the social media site with its profound first tweet: just setting up my twttr 10.The March equinox occurs the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator )the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth s equator) from south to north. This happens either on March 19, 20 or 21 every year.

After 10 years of practice he started professional playing with many renowned singers in Kolkata and also in radio television. His mother Smt. Shila Chatterjee also a classical artist who encouraged him to start singing. He started listening to his mother and after that Dr.Amiya Ranjan Banerjee and finally he got chance at ITC/SRA under guru Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty for 6 years. Last 6 years he is taking lessons from Ustad Rashid Khan. His Bengali albums are Bhorer Alo, Tumi nei bole, Sharodia, Aat range, Aamar Akash, Bhubanamohini, Shamiana, Nameplate, Srot, Rong number, Khuda jaane, Ebong Rabindranath, Ebar najrul, Songfusion etc. In hindi, Rishtaa, Bandish fusion, Raaga rocks and many more. He sang in bollywood hindi films like Devdas, Tere naam, Raincoat, Well done abba etc, in bengali fims like, Patal ghor, Bandhan, Suvodristi, Bor asbe ekhuni, Rupkatha noe, Accident, Chaturango, Cholo paltai, Meghe dhaka tara, Baishe srabon, Onno apala, Bitnoon, Maya mridanga etc and lots of commercials, TV serials and tele films. He has worked in films with Bappi Lahiri, Shantanu Moitra, Ismail Darbar, Sajid wajid, Indradip Dasgupta, Debajyoty Mishra, Y.S.Mulki, Ram Sampath, Monty Sharma, Shankar Eshaan Loy, Jeet Ganguly, Pritam. He has sung for many famous film directors like Rituporno Ghosh, Sanjay leela Bhansali, Dev anand, Rajkumar Heerani, Pradip Sarkar, Shoojit Sarkar, Shyam Benegal, Satish Kaushik, Srijit Mukherjee, Kamaleswar Mukherjee, Kaushik Ganguli, Raja Sen, Satarupa Sanyal, Suman Mukhopadhyay and many more. He is also doing music direction for albums and films now. Raghab has rendered ICC world cup cricket theme song 2011 for Shanker Ehsaan Loy. It is arguably the most visible feature of the Advanced Engineering Building, supported by large-span timber trusses from mixed hardwoods grown in the Maryborough region as well as public spaces with spectacular views across the University lakes. The $135 million Advanced Engineering Building automatically adjusts its internal temperature for the comfort of its occupants and self-manages its energy output throughout the day. The strain, movement and temperature gaugues embedded into the roof, walls, floors and columns of the complex are all visible, making the awardwinning building a "live learning" site.

9 Newsletter - March HARA MASALA MURG (CORIANDER - PUDINA CHICKEN) Ingredients Method Chicken,skinned and cut into 12 pieces on bone 750 grams Onions - 2 medium Oil - 3 tablespoons Garam Masala: Green cardamoms 4, Cloves 5, Green chillies, broken - 4 Garlic 6-8 cloves Ginger,chopped - 1 inch piece Fresh mint leaves - 1/2 cup Fresh coriander leaves - 1 cup Scraped coconut - 1/2 cup Coriander powder - 1 tablespoon Cumin powder - 1 tablespoon Almond paste - 1/4 cup Yogurt - 1 1/2 cup Fresh cream - 1/4 cup Salt to taste Grind together green chillies, garlic, ginger, mint leaves, coriander leaves and coconut with sufficient water into a fine paste. Transfer the paste into a bowl. Add the chicken pieces and salt. Mix well. Set aside to marinate in a refrigerator for 3-4 hour. Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add green cardamoms, cloves and chopped onions. Sauté for 2-3 minutes. Add coriander powder and cumin powder to onions and mix well. Add almond paste and mix and add a little water and mix well. Add marinated chicken and yogurt. Mix well, cover and cook on low heat for minutes. Turn off the heat and keep it covered for 5-10 minutes more. Serve hot garnished with cream.
