1 October 2018 Community Page 1 A Message from the District Superintendent Someone recently told me that I ve added a new season to my life as a District Superintendent, charge conference season. As the rest of the world is celebrating the return of cool weather, PSLs, boots, and sweaters, I m adding some miles to my car and new faces to my memory bank! As we are entering this charge conference season, please know that I am celebrating the faithful work of the people of God in every corner of this district. I have 66 opportunities (that s how many charge conferences there are) to glimpse the disciples of Jesus Christ who are deployed in northcentral WV offering the transforming love of Christ! As we seek to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, I think about Jesus' discipleship lesson to the 12 who followed him just prior to the feeding of the 5,000. It was getting late and there was a hungry crowd and the disciples logically wanted to send the folks away so that they could find food and lodging. But Jesus had something different in mind. He told them, They need not go away. You give them something to eat. Matthew 14: 16 (NRSV) Over and over again as I have met with our churches, I ve seen our United Methodist disciples do exactly that. When I think about it, the numbers of people who are being fed through our United Methodist churches is overwhelming to me. We do reach out to our neighbors and hear the cries of those who need a meal. Hundreds of children are receiving backpacks of food for the weekend. Churches are delivering homemade soup to folks who are homebound. They are serving community meals that are open to folks to come and eat and enjoy company together, creating community. There are pie bakers and buckwheat cake creators and lots of other experts around. It is a joy for me to see the work of disciples bringing transformation in profound ways in our communities. Each charge conference is a special glimpse into the work and ministry of each local church. In every one, there has been something wonderful to celebrate. Thank you for making this season of my life a true glory sighting a glimpse of God s glory as you make it known in your church and community. At this month s clergy gathering, we are welcoming Ken Willard, the newest member of our Conference staff, to introduce us to his discipleship work called Stride. This is another opportunity to equip our clergy for leadership in discipleship systems in our churches. I hope to see the fruit of this continue to grow in our district as we introduce more people into a growing relationship with Christ. Thank you all for making this season a joyful celebration of the gifts that God has given us to share with the world.
