1 MonValley District Newsletter OCTOBER 2013 MonValley District Office 307 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont, WV Phone: ~ Fax: The Challenges of Following Jesus will be the theme of this fall s Parish Charge Conference Worship Gatherings. Charges within their given Parish will gather for a time of worship, receive the business that has been affirmed by their respective Church Councils, present checks (made out to MonValley District) from local churches for the General Church Educational Funds, and conclude with a time of fellowship. The Parish Charge Conference will be a time of worship and encouragement. Each Charge should have at least 10 persons committed to attend personally invited by the pastor. Parish Charge Conferences will begin in October and be completed before Thanksgiving. If a Charge has special business, I will ask the charge to stay afterward for an individual charge conference. This arrangement has given additional time to complete all reports needed for Charge Conference as well as a time of celebration as a Cooperative Parish. Reports will be received by asking the 10 Advance Preparation Questions (found elsewhere in the newsletter) which will report work done by church committees. It will be more important than ever for pastors to submit all completed Charge Conference Forms five days before their scheduled Charge Conference. Chairs of respective committees will need to help them to complete all work necessary. Thanks to those 7 walkers and 7 bikers who completed all or a portion of the 16 miles between Prickett s Fort and Uffington raising $3,162. Benton Ferry helped with registration and Gateway, Catawba, and Pisgah provided water stops. The two walks have raised $4,619. I am aware of a charge that has over $2,000 pledged. I am encouraged by the support to date and I believe we can easily raise $10,000 in the district. There is one Walk/Run/Bike left: October 5, Shinnston to Monongah beginning at 9 AM. If you have not done so already, I need you and others from your church to participate either by getting sponsors for yourself and others, or by asking member of the congregation to sponsor me or Julie for the 11 miles of the final walk. Ask persons to make a $10 pledge, (buy a net, save a life) for each child or grandchild. Buying a mosquito net sounds so simple, but it is so effective in saving the life of a child from malaria. I am counting on your support.

5 Page 5 It Worked for Me Undie Sunday Although I know there was a time before we celebrated Undie Sunday in the our Annual Conference, I don t remember it! Undie Sunday is a great way to invite persons in the church to give a small donation to one of our mission projects in a way that they had not considered before, underwear! While our mission projects often have more clean used clothing than they can use, folks often need underwear as well, and no one should be asked to wear used underwear. While you may tire of receiving new underwear from your parents at Christmas, to those in need it is a real necessity. I would place boxes at the doors and several weeks earlier begin to remind folks to drop their drawers at the doors! All sizes are needed, for men, women, boys, and girls. Only new underwear are sent to the mission projects. In the MonValley District we are fortunate to have two mission projects: Heart and Hand House, Philippi, and Scott s Run Settlement House, Osage, that will be grateful for your Undie Sunday donations. Plan to make Undie Sunday a part of your yearly cycle of mission outreach. Many will choose to participate. It is a way that children and youth groups can also serve. It worked for me. It will work for you. 6 Page 6 District Educational Funds Emphasis for 2013 $11,645 Goal Our mission emphasis for the 2013 MonValley District Charge Conferences will be the three Educational Funds established by General Conference. MEF, the Ministerial Educational Fund, provides scholarships for Licensing School, Course of Study, and Seminary as well as continuing formation events in our Annual Conference. (25% of monies received are returned to our Annual Conference.) Your pastor has benefited from MEF funds in some way. The Africa University Fund, provides scholarships to the only degree granting institution of higher education supported by the UMC in Africa. Young men and women from 25 countries come to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees. The Black College Fund supports the 11 historically Black United Methodist colleges and universities here in the United States. As is our custom, I will be asking for a check from each church for $1 per member at Charge Conference made out to MonValley District to insure that we reach our district goal of $11,645. (Please do not send this money through the Conference Treasurer s office with your conference apportionment.) Thank you to those churches that will be faithful to this mission asking. Advance Preparation Questions MonValley District Parish Charge Conferences Worship Gatherings 2013 In order for our parish wide worship gatherings to be focused on worship, encouragement, and practical ways to strengthen local congregations, each pastor and charge needs to be sure that the following items have been covered in advance. Each pastor will be asked these questions. 1. Have the Charge Conference Secretary, Recommendations for Ministry, and all Officers (local church and charge), been approved by the Church Council/s? Have Lay Servant and Lay Speaker Reports been received. 2. Does the Healthy, Vital, Fruitful Congregation Report reflect your vision and ministry action plan to reach new persons for Jesus Christ? 3. Has the Gifts and Service to Mission-District and Conference 2014 Commitment Form been discussed and completed by the Church Council? 4. Has the Church Council received a copy of the Missional Fair Share Apportionments for 2014 (Conference and District) and are you committed to leading your church to pay them in full? 5. Is there a check made out to MonValley District from the church/es of $1 per member for the World Service Education Funds (Africa University, Black College Fund, Ministerial Education Fund)? 6. Has the Finance Committee s Report been completed and shared with the Church Council with an up to date accounting for all fund balances? 7. Has the Trustee s Report been completed and shared with the Church Council listing all assets and insurance coverage? 8. Has the Parsonage Inspection been completed and shared with the Church Council? 9. Has the Pastor s Compensation Sheet been approved by the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, the Finance Committee, and Church Council(s) for inclusion in the 2014 church budget? 10. Has the Pastor shared his/her written report and Continuing Formation form with the Church Council or the congregation? Attention Church Treasurers: Effective January 1, 2013, local church treasurers were no longer bonded by the blanket policy of the Annual Conference. You need to be sure that you are adequately covered under the local church property and liability insurance.

7 Page 7 Child Protection Coordinator Training Make-Up Saturday, November 2, Westover UMC, Morgantown..9 AM 12 Noon Pastors and elected Child Protection Coordinators from each church who missed the training last April are expected to attend this 3 hour make-up event which will be in conjunction with the Lay Servant/Speaker Academy. 9 Page 9 Mission and Ministry News Scott s Run Settlement House: The leaves are falling and the air is getting crisp which means SRSH is now taking applications for our Thanksgiving Baskets. Interested sponsors may still sign-on to help us provide Thanksgiving meals to nearly 500 families by calling Lisa McMorrow at (304) If you know of families in need in Monongalia County, please let them know that applications will be accepted until the end of Oct. We are in the process of adding a fifth school to the backpack feeding program; we will be serving over 900 children weekly at Brookhaven, Mason-Dixon, Mountainview, Mylan Park and North Elementary Schools. Anyone interested in reducing their WV State Taxes should get in touch with Julie Harris! SRSH was awarded $12,000 in NIP Tax Credits for our backpack feeding program. We anticipate distributing all of our credits prior to the June 30th deadline. Thank you for the blessings of service, support and prayers--all make it possible for us to make a positive impact in the lives of those most in need in Mon County. Grace, Julie Harris, Executive Director Heart and Hand House, Inc.: Happy Fall! Leaves are starting to change color, the air is cool and crisp, and it s time to gear up for the busy final months of another year. Our thrift stores are preparing for change over to fall and winter items, the backpack feeding program is getting underway for another school year, and we are beginning to collect toys for our annual Christmas Toy Store. The purpose of the Toy Store is to support and encourage the efforts of Barbour County families to be more self-sufficient by providing them an opportunity to personally select and purchase gifts for their children at prices they can afford. New toys are made available at less than half of suggested retail prices, and many items are made available free of charge (like underwear from Undie Sunday). Families who simply cannot afford to purchase toys, even at reduced prices, are allowed to shop and select gifts for their children for free. Any income earned from the Toy Store is recycled back into the program to help cover expenses for the following year. Donations of new toys for children, up to age 16, are being accepted now, and early donations are appreciated to give our volunteers ample time to sort, separate, and price items. If you would like to make a monetary donation, we have volunteer elves who are more than happy to shop for toys on your behalf. Also, if you re in Philippi, please stop by our new Garden Market location in the old IGA building at 106 South Main Street. The new market place, though still a work in progress, is open Tuesday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 7 a.m. until Noon, and now includes a coffee shop and donut shop. We ll keep everyone posted on developments and on a grand opening date. We continue to be grateful for all the support we receive throughout the MonValley District and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers. Don t forget Undie Sunday! This year is more than half way over, the students are back in school and for the most part everyone has taken their vacation. MonValley District United Methodist Men will be holding the final meeting of 2013 on October 8 at the Reedsville United Methodist Church in Reedsville, WV, just past the corner of Rt.7 & 92 on the right. This is the first time we have been there and we are most appreciative of them agreeing to be the host church. I hope we have a good turn out and this will also be a good time to welcome their new pastor, Brian Long. Gina Stewart, appointed pastor of Riverside and Granville United Methodist Churches, will be the guest speaker. She will be talking about her mission trips and how important they are in people s lives. James "Ed" Rancjik will be stepping down as secretary and we need to find a person to fill this position. According to Robert s Rules of Order, without a secretary to do the recording a meeting can't rightly be held. If anyone is interested or you know of someone who would be interested in serving in this capacity please let me know. Dinner will begin at 6:30 pm. It is always good to be there by 6:00. To help the ones preparing the food we need to have a count from each church of how many will be attending. An Executive Committee meeting will be held at 6:00 pm before the regular meeting. Some new items have come up that need to be talked about. My is Gmaudie@frontiernet.net and my phone number is Please call me with your attendance numbers. Thank You and God Bless.
