2 Guadalupe Breakfast Club The final Guadalupe Breakfast Club journey of 2018 took us to the exhibits of the amazing Truman Library & Museum. Following Mass and a potluck breakfast at OLOG, we carpooled to Independence, Mo., and began our tour of the moving exhibits that brought out complex feelings as many in our group remembered this time in our nation s history. During Truman s first days in office he (and the country) faced some of the most difficult decisions encountered by any president in our history. Our time in Independence concluded with a delicious lunch together at Ophelia s in Independence Square. The Guadalupe Breakfast Club, typically meets April through September. This year we carpooled together to the JC Penny Museum and Quilt Shops in Hamilton, and to the Benedictine Abbey at Conception, Mo., for a tour, Holy Mass in the Basilica, and lunch in the guest dining room. We also visited shops in Jamesport, Mo., and historically beautiful Catholic Churches in Chillicothe, Mo., and in St. Benedict s and Seneca, Kansas. Our season ended with the Truman Museum. The Guadalupe Breakfast Club extends a generous thank you to all our parishioners who have driven for us this season. Chr istian offers Confession at 7:00 am and Mass at 8:00 am every first Saturday of the month at Mir House of Prayer. All are invited and welcome to attend. If anyone is interested in joining our Legion of Mary, please join us at a meeting to discern if Mary is calling you to this apostolate. The members and their spiritual leader, Fr. Christian, meet every Wednesday at 9 am downstairs in Rm 116 B Marian Hall. From the Desk of Fr. Christian Dear friends, At the beginning of this month of October I would like to offer a few reflections on the great prayer of the Holy Rosary. Is this a prayer that you have difficulty with? Have you found yourself saying, I don t get anything out of it? I must admit that I have said this in the past. Years ago and even still today it can be a very painful process to pray the rosary. As many things go, I find that each day I pray it and become more familiar with it I begin to realize its great value. I sometimes think that the prayer of the rosary is like the water that runs over rock and eventually changes the shape of the stone. The prayers of the rosary pour over our heart and begin to change it into the likeness of Jesus. There are days when I feel like I am rattling off the prayers and not truly praying. At times I find my mind wondering and full of distractions. At the same time I know that there is much merit to being faithful to prayer and praying even when I don t feel like I m getting anything out of it. Perhaps such prayer is the best when we pray regardless of any sensible consolations. Our Lord is very pleased with faithful prayer done with love and devotion. Something that I find extremely consoling is to pray the rosary while walking. When I am feeling stressed and overwhelmed I do this and feel a great peace come over me. Somehow I am better able to be in the presence of Jesus and Mary. From decade to decade I switch between focusing on the mystery and focusing on the words of the Hail Mary. Some of the mysteries of the rosary are difficult for me to meditate on. Instead of fretting this I just do my best and give it to the Lord. I trust that the Lord will give me a special insight or grace if He so chooses. The other thing that helps me to realize the effectiveness and value of the rosary is the testimony of the Church and Her saints, some of them popes. The Church has been saying for hundreds of years: This is a good prayer and if prayed with devotion can be helpful in growing closer to Jesus through Mary. I would like to share a few of these quotes for you to consider. I share these in hopes that you might take up this most timeless practice. Give me an army saying the Rosary and I will conquer the world. Blessed Pope Pius IX Go to the Madonna. Love her! Always say the Rosary. Say it well. Say it as often as you can! Be souls of prayer. Never tire of praying, it is what is essential. Prayer shakes the Heart of God, it obtains necessary graces! -St. Padre Pio For those who use their intelligence and their study as a weapon, the Rosary is most effective. Because that apparently monotonous way of beseeching Our Lady as children do their Mother, can destroy every seed of vainglory and pride. St. Josemaria Escriva The Rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the Rosary is beyond description. Archbishop Fulton Sheen Peace and God bless, Fr. Christian The parish is offering a new program called the Pilgrim Statue Program and it is conducted under the leadership of the Legion of Mary. This program will give parish households the opportunity to invite Mary into their home by the way of a pilgrim statue an image of Mary for a week. During that week, all the members of the household pray the Rosary together each day before the pilgrim statue. The hope is to get parish households to pray the Rosary daily as was requested by Our Lady at Fatima in 1917 at each of the six apparitions. So central is the Rosary to the Fatima message that Our Lady chose to identify herself as The Lady of the Rosary. If you have not already signed up and are interested in hosting the Pilgrim Statue please call or text Kelly Douglas or at kellysdouglas@icloud.com.
