3 The CMA and The Church Today You may have no ced that the current Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) for the Diocese of Rochester has begun. This is the annual fund drive for the diocese itself, its ministries, and its offices. It is important. Next weekend, we will see the CMA video at all of the Masses. As part of that video, our bishop, Bishop Matano, will speak directly to each of us about what is happening in the Church today. We have seen it in the newspapers, on the Internet, on television. The sexual abuse allega ons against priests throughout the State of Pennsylvania, the issues with Archbishop McCarrick, the pain and the anger from the vic- ms of clergy sexual abuse. It makes all of us angry, sad, incredulous, and angry again. And we should be angry. The sexual abuse of children, teens, and adults is an evil act. To have our clergy do this is a betrayal of that sacred trust. This leads us to wonder what is happening to our Church? Are they addressing this? What can I do? First, let me say how sorry I am to the vic ms of this abuse done by priests and bishops. I don t know if my apology will mean anything, but I offer it. I offer it because the Church and everyone associated with her must. Secondly, let me say that I have not said anything publicly un l now because, frankly, I don t know what to say. I am furious that men in my chosen voca on have done this and, what they have done, has hurt me personally. I have been told that people avoid me because I am a priest. People tell friends, parents at St. Lawrence, don t let your children become altar servers. I understand their fear and anger. I am so saddened by it. We as a diocese are addressing this and have been for a while. For a long me now, anyone who works in the church whether paid or volunteer, who will have contact with children or vulnerable adults are required to complete the program called CASE: Crea ng A Safe Environment. That includes training, back ground checks, and ongoing forma on in the safety of our innocents. All of our employees in the parish and the school, including all of our clergy and teachers...all of our volunteer catechists, all of our volunteers in our Scou ng program who have contact with children in any way, all of our Youth Ministry volunteers go through this training. Like you, I read in the media what else the Church is doing and how it is trying to address this issue. Prayer and penance is offered. Vic ms are asked to come forward and be heard. It is a hard road and a difficult issue to address, but things are happening. So, why bring it up now? I spoke about this issue last weekend in our Parish Pastoral Council and asked them what I should say. MUSINGS By Father Lee Chase Three things: say you re sorry, tell us that the Church will be okay, and let us know why we should even consider dona ons to the CMA. I hope I ve addressed these somewhat. The Church will be okay. And we need to con nue to support the charitable works of the Church even in the midst of this sorrow. The hungry are s ll needing to be fed. The Sacraments are s ll needing to be administered. The children s ll need to be educated about God s love and forgiveness, and the salva on brought to us through Christ. We s ll go on. In the end, we are the Church. All of us make up the Church, not just the clergy, not just the bishops. All of us. Addressing this issue of abuse has and will con nue to change the Church I pray for the be er. More transparency is needed. Be er forma on for our seminarians is a must. Priests must be humble and real. People should never pedestalize the priests. We ll be okay. Next weekend, I m going to show you the video and let Bishop Matano speak to you and make the case for the CMA be er than I. I just want all of you to know that keeping our parish children safe is one of my top priori es. I don t want one child hurt here ever! Join me in that effort. Let s let the Church be a place of safety, sanctuary, love, and welcome. This is what God wants us to be. 3
