Box Greenville, SC Tel: 864/ Fax: Website: stpetersgreenville.com parishadministrator@ stpetersgreenvillesc.net Welcome Our New Deacon St. Peter's is blessed to receive both the ministry and challenge of one of our diocese's newest deacons, beginning this month. The Rev. Thomas "Al" Hipp will begin his work as a deacon in the Piedmont Convocation on Sunday, October 2 nd. Although Al has been assigned by our bishop to serve throughout the convocation, his primary base of ministry will be at St. Peter's. He will become a non-stipendiary member of our parish staff, and will serve on many Sunday's in the traditional liturgical roles that deacons perform--proclaiming the Gospel, bidding the prayers, setting the table, and issuing the dismissal. Al will also preach from time to time, with a particular emphasis on the ministry we are all called to share in seeking and serving Christ in all persons, and loving our neighbors as ourselves. The specific ministry objectives that our bishop has set forth for Al, and all deacons of our diocese, include the work of helping equip lay leaders to love and serve the Lord through mission and ministry within and beyond our parish borders. Al's work will also involve helping organize community action around outreach and service. A fitting example of this ministry is the fact that Al will leave immediately from Church on his first Sunday with us to lead a team of lay persons to Northern Alabama, where they will be constructing a home for a family displaced by the recent hurricanes that devastated the area. Al was raised in Greenville, South Carolina. He is a cradle Episcopalian raised at Christ Episcopal Church, and is a graduate of Christ Church Episcopal School. After attending the College of Charleston and working in insurance and commercial glass industries in Virginia, he moved back to South Carolina in 1988 to continue his education. In 1989 he began a new career in residential construction. In 1995 Al transferred his baptismal letter to St. James Episcopal Church. He has been married to Karen Bruning Hipp for twenty years. They have three children; Tom 17, Jack 16 and Sam 13. Please welcome Al, as we give thanks to God for his call to ordained leadership among us, and thanks to our bishop for assigning him primarily to St. Peter's. Blessings and Peace, Furman +

2 STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY Dear Friends of St. Peter s Church We will be celebrating Stewardship Sunday during our 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services on October 23 rd. I hope you can be present to join your fellow parishioners in making a financial commitment to our common mission for This past year has been a time of transition for our parish. We experienced both blessings and challenges as a community. We enjoyed new opportunities for worship, Christian formation, fellowship and service. Yet, like many non-profit organizations, we have been forced to do more with less. During the past two years, St. Peter s has experienced an income decline. The good news is that your Vestry and staff have held the line on expenses and, unlike some non-profits, we are fortunately operating in the black! We have continued to fully fund missions and outreach, and continued to fully support the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina. Pledges during the past couple months have been especially strong. This summer, you generously supported our youths summer mission trips. Your support allows us to remain faithful to our common mission: One body of transformation embracing all people through Christ s love. As we look forward to 2012, there are some clear priorities. We must hire a part time nursery coordinator to help support the work of our nursery volunteers and meet the demands of a growing nursery. We must hire a part time coordinator for youth and family ministries in order to meet the growing needs among this segment of our parish. We must resume the parish s longstanding practice of setting aside reserve funds to meet several imminent and significant building maintenance expenses. The good news is that St. Peter s vestries have historically set aside funds to help us get started with inevitable projects such as roof and HVAC replacement. It will, however, take additional capital investment in our facilities during the next couple of years to meet these needs and not compromise our regular operations and our common mission. St. Peter s is a faithful parish with a blessed history and a bright future! Many lives are being touched by the mission and ministry that thrive here. To meet the financial challenges that are on our horizon, it will require both an increase in the number of pledges and an increase in the level of those presently pledging. I hope that on October 23 rd, you will express your generous support of the mission and ministry we share by making a financial pledge to God, and to your parish family. If you have not made a financial pledge St. Peter s in the past, I ask that you prayerfully consider so this year. If you made a pledge for 2011, I hope that you prayerfully consider whether you will be able to increase your commitment for Your pledges help us corporately address the values and priorities that we hold dear as a parish community. We seek to balance a budget that does not entail, for example, either forfeiting Christ s call to compassionate charity and service; or neglecting the facilities that were passed down to us by our forebears; or neglecting the needs of our own parishioners through inadequate staffing. God blessed us with a Church that is built with many loving hands and hearts. Between now and October 23 rd, I invite you to prayerfully consider both the blessings and challenges we share. This is the moment for us to respond and give generously toward our future. God gave us this moment of transition during our common life, as a parish. Together, this is our moment to share the gifts of God for the people of God. Thank you for your prayerful consideration, and thank you for your love of St. Peter s. Thomas M. Hoskinson, Vestry Stewardship Liaison Our Finances as of August 31 st (000 s) Actual Income 238 Budgeted Income Adult Fellowship Adult Fellowship will meet on Saturday,Oct.15th at 7:00 p.m. at the home of John & Louisa Wagoner, 112 Ticonderoga Drive, Greer. For information or directions call Everyone is welcome. Thank You to my St. Peter s Family I would like to thank everyone for their many kindnesses extended to me during my recent surgery. The prayers, phone calls, cards, visits and food were so greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for being such a loving and caring church family. Faye Miller From Your Editor We are in the process of changing the look of the newsletter. We want to make it more about what s coming up. We also want to include more pictures of events. We need your help to do this. Please let us know about your events by the 20 th of each month. Thanks. Ron Parish Life 2

3 John Brown s Body 7:30 PM November 4 th & 5th St. Peter s Players will be presenting John Brown s Body by Stephen Vincent Benét. This will be presented at 7:30 PM on November 4 & 5 in the main church. This is an adaptation of Stephen Vincent Benét's great poem which was originally presented on Broadway by Tyrone Power, Judith Anderson and Raymond Massey, and was just as successfully produced Off-Broadway, in somewhat revised form. The epic poem reading is a highly dramatic work with a quality of excitement unrivaled by many plays. The poem begins with John Brown's attack on Harper's Ferry and goes on through the Civil War, telling much of it from the points of view of Jack Ellyat, a Northern soldier, and Clay Wingate, a Southern soldier. The families and backgrounds of both men are woven into the action of the poem, as are their romances. There are three principal speaking parts, plus a chorus that speaks and sings. This will be a St. Peter s Readers Theater production utilizing the talents of Jack Peyrouse, Ben Sullivan, and Shirley Sarlin. Shirley Sarlin is a Greenville professional actress who has appeared in many productions in the Greenville area. The chorus is being lead by Emelyn Pagel. Annette Garver is directing the production. Annette has also been involved with many theatrical productions in the Greenville area. (You may remember that Annette, Shirley, and Jack did Love Letters as a benefit at Center Stage.) There will be no admission charge for this benefit production and everyone involved is donating their time and talent. Any donations that you care to make will be appreciated. All proceeds after paying our modest expenses will go to The Buddy Club. The Buddy Club is a bereavement support group tailored for children and teens. Plan to attend on November 4 th or 5 th ECW Meeting October 1 st The Fall meeting of the ECW will be held Saturday, October 1 9:00 a.m. in Stockstill Hall. Coffee and muffins will be served and followed by a general membership meeting. After the short meeting we will carpool to 10,000 Villages for a program and to tour the store and shop. There will be a signup sheet in the Lower Narthex. All women of the church are automatic members of ECW and are invited to come. Ten Thousand Villages Greenville is a Non-Profit Fair Trade Retailer who is part of the Ten Thousand Villages store network throughout the United States and Canada. Ten Thousand Villages' mission is to provide vital, fair income to people in developing countries by selling their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. We work with artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. This income helps pay for food, education, health care and housing. United Ministries' 22nd Annual Walk for the Homeless! Who? You, your friends, your family, your co-workers, your classmates, or maybe even your dog. Anyone who is willing to walk, jog, or roll for the homeless of Greenville County. Start and end at Fluor Field at the West End. Parking is available at County Square, and a trolley will transport participants to and from Fluor Field. There will be two routes this year, one measuring 3.2 miles and the other totaling 4.5 miles. Why? To raise funds and awareness for the homeless of our very own community. When? Sunday, October 2, rain or shine! Registration opens at 1:30 PM and the Walk starts at 2:00 PM. Place Of Hope They were thrilled at PLH to receive the Backpacks as they were having many requests for them, and would greatly appreciate us sending more, if they are available. Also many thanks for the shaving cream and razors, The homeless may sleep in a cardboard box under bridges etc., they still like a hot shower clean clothes and a shaven face, everything we send is put to good use. This month October, we start to think about cold weather items and will do so for the next few months. Our items this month are GLOVES AND SOCKS any size, small. medium. large and extra large, I hope we can have a good collection, there is nothing worse than cold hands and feet. If you do not have a favorite charity that you donate your used clothing to, please consider the SOS Thrift Store at 1184, N. Pleasant burg Dr. and mention that you would like PLH credited for the merchandise you take, SOS will give PLH vouchers and as needed PLH will give these to their clients. Think Pink!! St. Peter's will celebrate Pink Sunday along with many other Greenville area churches on Sunday, October 30. This is the time to celebrate the courage of those survivors whom we love, fondly remember those whose lives have been lost to breast cancer, and learn more about early detection of this disease. Pink Sunday is sponsored locally by the Susan G Komen Foundation and St. Peter's is registered as an official Pink Sunday participant. So, mark your calendar to wear pink to church on October 30. Our coffee hour will include as much pink as we can. Parish Life 3

6 Art From The Heart Thank You for a Super Evening! It is said that many hands make light work and this was indeed true for our Art from the Heart soiree. I would like to thank my committee for all their super help in organizing the details so that we had such a wonderful event: Sally Armstrong, Paige Griffin, Kirsten Hansen, Sally Hansen, Ron Plemmons, and Tony Koltonski were my committee extrodinaire. Many thanks also go out to all of you who helped set up, take down and man the food, the wine bar and the money venues throughout the evening. I know our evening was made more enjoyable listening to the lovely music provided by Craig Piepho. Thank you Craig! Special thanks to Tom Hovland for once again providing all our posters, and invitations to both contribute and to join in the fun! The evening would not have happened if it were not for the Green Mission Group who started the ball rolling by saving so much wood from our red oak tree and having a vision for its use. Let s all give them a big thank you for their many hours of hard work and the beautiful items it produced. We are a very lucky parish to also have many talented people that were so generous to donate their works in many forms for the auction. I am sure we were all impressed by what those around us are able to do. Because of ALL of our efforts the General Fund of St. Peter s now has an extra $6849! Even after a few expenses we will realize more than $6400! Parish Life 6
