Box Greenville, SC Tel: 864/ Fax: parishadministrator@ stpetersgreenvillesc.net Website: stpetersgreenville.org Dear People of St. Peter s, I want to share a parable from my experience helping move our oldest daughter to Washington D.C. It happened the weekend Hurricane Matthew came to S.C. We left on Friday with a faint trace of mist on the windshield. Since we were headed north, and the storm was coming from the south I looked forward to sunny skies on our journey, and much needed rain for our lawn in Greenville. Uninformed expectations can lead us to unfortunate disappointments. When we turned north onto I-77 we were driving through a downpour. Large trucks and cars sprayed mist so severely that it was difficult to see the way ahead. Since our minivan was packed to the ceiling with Katherine's belongings it was impossible to see backward. Construction was a further complication, with shifting lanes, uneven pavement, and concrete barricades everywhere. This was a journey of faith (on so many levels). Any time I needed to change lanes either Kim (on my right) or Katherine (behind me on the left) would have to call out "yes" or "no." Well-placed faith can help us make good decisions when we cannot see for ourselves. Many of you know of my dislike of driving on and around steep slopes. This is even truer when carrying excessive cargo weight in a minivan. One parishioner--knowing of my acrophobia--even warned me not to take I-77 because of some intimidating mountain terrain. The "good news" is that the pouring rain, fog, and mist stirred up from the traffic completely shrouded any views that would have triggered panic on my part. Dark clouds can still have "silver linings" and one set of difficult challenges can help us persevere through other difficult challenges. When we crossed from Virginia into the District of Columbia that night, the rain stopped. We experienced a gift of peace. Katherine's new roommate came out to greet us and help us move her items into the apartment. We arrived in the dark and found sunshine nonetheless. The Church is like a community of travelers who pay attention to the wisdom of God-- spoken through prophets and saints, and above all through Jesus Christ. This wisdom helps us to cultivate informed, reliable expectations and avoid unnecessary disappointments in life. We travel together in order to help one another to see. We invest our well-placed faith in God and in one another because we cannot always see everything for ourselves, nor should we trust completely in ourselves. We can expect dark clouds and difficult challenges on our journey, and trust that we can nevertheless persevere and even find resilience through these moments. We can also expect to discover sunshine and peace in the dark, particularly when we receive and share gifts of compassion and service, helping one another shoulder the load. Blessings and Peace, 1

3 New Faces at St. Peter s Attic Sale/Silent Auction NEW FACES AT ST. PETER S Vanessa and Larry Rinaldo 718 Richbourg Rd. Greenville, SC rinaldo.larry@hotmail.com Vanessa and Larry retired to Greenville from Danbury, Connecticut. Their sons, who were living in Charleston, told their parents to check out Greenville because it was just like Danbury with the mountains close by. They saw the sign for St. Peter s and found their church home. Larry was raised as a Catholic, but joined the Episcopal Church in Danbury. His three children are his Godparents! Larry worked as a Geologist, and the family moved all over with Southwest while he was working in uranium mining and with gas and oil companies. He ended his career in New York with the Environmental Protection Agency. Vanessa s degree was in Psychology, and she worked in Danbury with the Department of Children and Families. Larry and Vanessa have three children. Jason, the oldest, was in the Navy for 12 years and spent 6 years on submarines. He is currently a Senior at Clemson majoring in Parks Management. Christine, the middle child, moved with her parents to Greenville and works with the Greenville Health Systems. Douglas graduated from Johnson and Wales in Charleston with degrees in Culinary and Pastry Art. While he was woking at a restaurant in Alexandrea, Va., President Obama and Michelle came in to eat. The President asked for second helpings of the dessert that Douglas made. Wow! In her spare time Vanessa likes to garden, bake and watch baseball and football. Larry loves quilting, which he describes as a mathematical puzzle. He has joined the Men s Group and Bible Study. Together they love exploring our mountains by taking the backroads. Getting lost is half the fun! Please welcome this interesting and outgoing couple to our St. Peter s family. They usually attend the 10:30 a.m. service. This doll bed was made by Mike Jones for the Silent Auction at the Attic Sale. BE A GOOD STEWARD: Reserve a table or two and bring your no longer wanted items to St. Peter s Attic sale on set-up day, November 18 th. Items should be in good condition, clean, and priced. Exceptional and hand crafted items can go in our Silent Auction. On sale day, November 19 th, an eat-in, take-out café will be available to all. Please contact Donna Jones at or mwjdtj@charter.net if you have a donation to be auctioned. I would also like to have a description of and a suggested minimum price for the item(s) in order to make bid sheets by November 1 st. Parent s Group Join other parents for lively and supportive discussions during children s Sunday School hour (when in session) in the choir room. November Topic: Interupted by Hope: Turning Toward Advent The purpose of Advent is to make us pregnant with hope. For many, the holiday season is not filled with joy, family, and gifts, but anxiety, stress, and despair. Advent seeks to reframe our experiences with new expectations, expectations that will not disappoint. It is the expectancy that new life will start to grow within all of us. However, we must be willing to make room for an interruption. Can we make that space to receive this gift? These films are provided to help bring our attention to the season, to a sacred, different time. 3

Blessing of the Animals Parishioners and visitors gathered on a sunny afternoon for the annual blessing of the animals in commemoration of St. Francis Day (October 4). United Ministries Hospitality Network/St. Giles Mark your calendars! Volunteers are needed once again to share hospitality with homeless families with children. St. Giles Presbyterian Church has invited St. Peter's parishioners to join them in sharing God's love with local homeless families. Families will be housed short term at St. Giles and volunteers are needed to help host them the week of November Sign-up sheets are located in the lower narthex. The church congregations and their volunteers are the most critical components of this program. Their involvement and commitment enables more families to be sheltered at a minimal cost with a more encompassing program and broader community support. With knowledge, interest and experience, volunteers become catalysts and advocates for solutions to the problems leading to and resulting in homelessness. If you are interested in volunteering please make sure you have taken the Safe Church training through St. Peter s. For additional information please contact Jody Fails or kkacgma4@gmail.com. There will be a training session after the 10:30 service on November 6, 2016 for interested volunteers. Volunteer Responsibilities: The hosts from 5 to 7 PM are there to help the guests and answer questions. When the food arrives, they get everyone together for the meal. Meal hosts bring the meals - this will be for about 15 people and the volunteers will be contacted by our meal coordinator with more information including how much food to prepare and if their planned meal is appropriate (we don't want everyone bringing pizza). The hosts from 7 to 9 PM are there to help the guests and answer questions. When the overnight hosts arrive, they leave. Overnight hosts arrive at 9 PM, get everyone to bed (that happens usually by itself around 10ish) and then lock up. In the morning, the guests are out by 7 and the hosts make sure the kitchen is cleaned up. Set up and break down volunteers are instructed by the leaders - it is basically all hands on deck... 4

5 Feed Thy Neighbor In January 2012 the Outreach Committee at St. Peter's joined with St. Andrews Church to prepare a free breakfast once per month on Saturday morning for people in need in the West End of Greenville. St. Andrews started the Feed Thy Neighbor (FTN) program because the soup kitchen is closed on Saturday and FTN provides a meal on a day when people may not otherwise have any other source of food. St. Peter's Parish volunteers have been serving a nutritious breakfast ever since on the 4th Saturday of each month. Other local Episcopal churches have joined the program also so breakfast is available every Saturday. Typically we provide a biscuit with ham, grits, scrambled eggs, orange juice, coffee, and at times fruit. We offer cookies etc... for special occasions. On average during the summer we have been serving around 70 guests, but the number usually increases in the winter and at times we have had 90 or more guests. Victoria and Kathy Siegel have been buying the food and they are always there at 6:30 AM to guide the rest of the crew in preparing it. We have two shifts of 7. The early shift starts at 6:30 AM and stays until 8:00 AM. The second shift comes in at 8:00 AM to continue to serve the food and clean up afterwards. Nicola Page sends out the 'Sign-up' via each month, a process started by her late mother Sylvia. This is a very rewarding outreach and the guests are all very appreciative. They thank us and want to help us at times. I feel very blessed to be able to be part of this program and hope that more volunteers will join us in the future. If you are interested in learning more or receiving the sign up s, please contact me.
