1 One body of transformation embracing all people through Christ s love Parish Life March, 2015 Volume 13, Issue 3 Sunday Services 8:30 & 10:30 am Nursery Offered from 9:30 am on Sundays Upcoming Events Mar. 29 th Palm Sunday April 2 nd Maundy Thursday April 3 rd Good Friday April 4 th Easter Vigil April 5 th Easter Sunday April th 5 th Grade Retreat April th Women s Retreat St. Peter s Episcopal Church 910 Hudson Road P. O. Box Greenville, SC Tel: 864/ Fax: parishadministrator@ stpetersgreenvillesc.net Website: stpetersgreenville.org Newsletter Editor: Ron Shabel rjshabel@bellsouth.net Dear People of St. Peter's, Most of the funerals at St. Peter's include interment at the Church, and so I am not accustomed to being part of an automobile procession to a cemetery. However, during the past few weeks I have attended several funerals which involved a procession of automobiles from the Church to the grave. Each of these took place in a small town, and I witnessed once again the custom of all the vehicles in the opposing lane coming to a stop as the entire funeral procession passed by. What a powerful sign of reverence and respect that is! It may not always be safe or possible on busy streets in larger cities, but in small towns this practice is still a quiet, simple way to show honor. One of the things I especially appreciate about this custom is that motorists pause to honor one who has died as well as those who mourn the death regardless of whether they even know the people or not. This reminds me of what it means to observe a Holy Lent. The Church bids us to pause with reverence during Lent in order to face the gravity of life and death, and the promise of resurrection in Easter. We are called to interrupt our progress toward personal destinations and private goals in order to honor the One who gives us life and receives us in death. On Ash Wednesday before we received the imposition of ashes we knelt in silence before the Lord, our maker and redeemer, as a sign of our mortal nature. When I see cars stopping on the road in the face of a funeral procession, it also looks like "kneeling" or showing reverence. It is a small act of self-denial. It may even be an opportunity for self-examination. During our Thursday night Lent Series, I will be focusing particularly upon the theology of worship and sacraments in the Church. We will consider the ways in which we show reverence, respect, and honor to God and to one another. Even if you are unable to attend on Thursday nights, I hope you will make time during Lent to practice reverence through prayer, fasting and self-denial. I challenge you to interrupt your progress toward personal destinations and private goals in order to read and meditate on God's holy Word so pick a Gospel to read from start to finish or a New Testament Epistle to study or an Old Testament prophet to wrestle with! Motorists who stop for a funeral procession may or may not "get anything out of it." Yet, it is still the right thing to do. Worship is very much like this. We may or may not "get anything out of it" every time we interrupt our lives to offer reverence, respect and honor to God, but there again it is not primarily about us! I do believe, however, that practicing reverence through prayer and worship, self-denial, fasting, reading and meditating on God's holy Word does put us in a position to regularly experience, remember and share the love of God, our maker and our redeemer! God bless you, 1

3 NEW FACES AT ST. PETERS NE Allison, Bruce and Lottie Brown (Lila not pictured) 618 Valley Creek Dr. Greer, SC Allison and Bruce moved from the Campobello area to Greer so that the girls would have more opportunities and activities by living in the Greenville area. Both Bruce and Allison graduated from Clemson and loved the Upstate. They were looking for a family oriented church and found St. Peters. Dorian, who led the baptism preparation classes, was both awesome and flexible, and both girls were baptized at St. Peters in January. Bruce is a Sales Representative for a label printer in Atlanta that manufactures labels for consumer products. His territory covers North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Allison is a Recreational Therapist at the Cottages at Brushy Creek, a nursing home in Greer. Allison and Bruce are both very friendly and outgoing, so they are well suited to working with people. Lottie is 2 1/2 and Lila is 8 months. Unfortunately, Lila was sick on the day the photograph was taken. In their spare time the family loves to travel and browse through antique shops looking for treasures. They also visit Allison s mother in Columbia and Bruce s family in Holly Springs (near Campobello). The Browns usually attend the 10:30 a.m. service. I know you will welcome this delightful couple into our St. Peter s family.
