Those were challenging days for many colonists, not least of all the parish priests who led their Anglican-American congregations in praying for the king. A miracle in our nation s history is the fulsome reconciliation and friendship we achieved with those who once had been bitter and violent enemies during the American Revolution. This is our own national parable and reminder of why Jesus challenges us to pray for our enemies. At last month s royal wedding we witnessed once again how love transcends borders, bounds, and distinctions like nothing else. Tens maybe hundreds of millions of people tuned in to see for themselves. I had not planned to watch until I learned who was preaching. Having experienced Michael Curry s preaching on a couple of occasions, I wanted to hear what he had to say. I also wanted to see how others experienced his gift of conveying both joy and challenge at the same time. Presiding Bishop Curry endeared millions of people with his message that the love of God can do anything. He did this not only by reciting memorable lines, but also by animating the experience of this Gospel with his joyful presence and energy. With Bishop Curry s preaching, the surface meaning is obvious to anyone, and yet for those paying attention between the lines there is more. At the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Bishop Curry managed to preach to the couple and the chapel and the world. By quoting both a Baptist preacher and a Roman Catholic theologian, Bishop Curry reached out across the wide bounds of Christendom and welcomed all sorts of listeners. By employing this breadth of references, our Presiding Bishop manifest what Anglicanism is at its best a via media, a comprehensive middle way. We strive to be catholic and evangelical, traditional and progressive, formal and charismatic, centered and pushing the edges. In the spirit of Queen Elizabeth I, we choose breadth over purity. Five hundred years later, our Anglican approach is just as counter-cultural as ever. The culture continues to be obsessed with absolute winners and losers. Much of our politics still seems like a zero sum game rewarding the most uncompromising people. In the midst of these temptations, our Anglican Christian Heritage challenges us to think, live, and love more broadly than that. In the spirit of Anglicanism, we are invited to reach forth our hands in love with an embrace that resembles the miraculous breadth of Jesus embrace. This is the kind of embrace that turned the Americans and the British from 18 th century mortal enemies into the closest of friends. As I watched and listened to the liturgy that Saturday, I found myself proud to be an Episcopalian and an Anglican. These unique lenses through which we experience and respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ require more patience, stretching, and openness than other ways of being Christian. Yet, I think practicing these virtues has the potential of making us stronger and more courageous disciples. Thank you for being an Episcopal congregation in the Anglican Communion which embodies the challenge of such broad faithfulness with joy. Blessings and Peace, 1

3 New Faces at St. Peter s Beverly Eye 507 Cliffview Ct. Greer, SC beverlyeye@bellsouth.net Beverly came to Greenville in 1988 from Morgantown, WV. She started attending St. Peter s with a friend and had heard about the community involvement, engaging priest and friendly congregation. I am going to use Beverly s own words from her to me for the next part of her story. I was in attendance April 2017 and said to a woman seated beside me (Gail Meacham), Please pray for my daughter, who was in ICU. A week later on a Monday, Gail called me to say that she had missed me this past Sunday. I told her Betsy had died. Within the hour Furman called me and asked, What can we do to help? Furman and the people at St. Peters (of which I wasn t even a member) held my hand, provided support and had a proper funeral for my daughter. I can t say enough about what this says to me about this church. Betsy s best friend, Brynn Duncan, helped Beverly raise $25,000 for another GHS dog to honor Betsy. They purchased King, known as Betsy s dog, as the 4th facility dog for GHS Children s Hospital. Beverly has another daughter, Stephanie, who lives in Travelers Rest with her family and son, Logan. I am sure Beverly loves having Stephanie and her family living close to her. It was Stephanie who designed the patch that King wears everyday. Beverly works part time and enjoys gardening, playing board games, exercising, reading and spending time with friends. She also works with GHS Philanthropy Department raising funds for additional therapy dogs. Beverly usually attends the 8:30 service. Please welcome this lovely lady to our church family. St. Peter s plans to offer two Just Faith classes this fall! Engaging Spirituality comprises twenty-one 2½-hour sessions. Every session includes Centering Prayer, guided meditation, lectio divina sacred reading), dialogue, and the deepening of relationships. Participants read five spiritual texts, maintain a prayer journal, reflect on the wisdom of 25 spiritual teachers, and view three inspiring DVDs. Each of the three phases of the course is marked by a retreat or immersion experience. This includes a one-day Immersion and a one-day Justice Pilgrimage to local sites. This small group meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday mornings, beginning in September. Please alicetbaird@gmail.com to express interest in this group or ask further questions. Alice Baird and Mary Mills will co-facilitate. Just Faith is a 24-week small group experience that invites participants to reflect more deeply upon matters of justice in our community, the nation, and the world in light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This program involves reading contemporary books on a variety of topics, and also participating in local, field trip experiences to enhance our awareness of the challenges endured by those whose claim upon liberty and justice for all is most tenuous. The regular, small group meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday nights, beginning in September. Please Fr. Furman at buchananf@charter.net to express interest in this group or ask further questions. Both groups will be limited to 12 participants. Spots are limited! ASAP! EFM (EDUCATION for MINISTRY) OPEN ENROLLMENT STARTS NOW! This is a 4 year program but with one year at a time commitment. It is a lot of reading but the insights are truly inspiring. EFM is very similar to the small Christian Churches in the 2 nd Century, where we pray, worship, and study together, always looking for God s Hand in our lives. You will get a great perspective of the Bible in the first 2 years, then study the history of Christianity in the 3 rd year and Ethics in the 4 th year. Along the way, you (and God!) will discern your ministry and your gifts. (a spiritual gift is something that gives you joy.) And it is a joyful journey, walking along committed happy Christians! Come join us! The cost is $375 per year, and partial scholarships are available. Contact either Fr. Furman or Meta Armstrong (arms7213@bellsouth.net) 3

5 St. Peter s Youth Children and Family Corner SPY Mission Trip this Summer! Making Pentecost Decorations The Youth of St. Peter s are committed to using some of their school vacation to go and help serve others. Last summer, several went to Ecuador with a group from the diocese, and this summer, a group will be going to the much closer North Carolina mountains for a week of service and mission. The group of 8 youth and 2 adults will be working with the Moravian camp of Laurel Ridge to help with some of the most economically hard-hit areas of North Carolina. Wilkes County, where we will be serving, has been cited as being the second worst county in terms of median household income lost over the past 10 years. To put it another way, only one other county in the country had a greater percentage drop in median income over the time period. Most of this loss was tied to Wilkes county losing several manufacturing plants and large businesses, including the relocation of the Lowe s Home Improvement headquarters. This means that many in this very rural, and sometimes rugged, county live below the poverty line and struggle to meet their basic living needs. The poverty rate is at about 23% for the county. Many homes have fallen in disrepair and need small scale repairs, painting or construction to help them be safe as well as increase energy efficiency and access for those with disabilities. We will be working to do some of those repairs and offer our labor, love and hope to those we will serve. There is opportunity for you to support us, if you are so led, by giving a donation to help with expenses. Our biggest need however is that you would pray for us as we represent St. Peter s in our service, July Here is our list of those attending: Max Adams Caden Gore T.C. 6 What we heard from you during our recent Listening Sessions During the months of March and April, we hosted 18 Listening Sessions with small groups of parishioners. We invited your participation, and we are grateful to all who were able to engage in providing helpful assessments, ideas, and recommendations for our vestry. Ultimately, 154 parishioners participated, including 20 youth and children. Approximately 25 facilitators, note-takers, and host volunteers made this possible. Here is an overview of your responses to the questions that were presented in the listening sessions. Question #1 What does St. Peter s do well? (The following is a list of themes with the frequency of mention.) Adults Youth/Children Atmosphere 59 8 Worship 43 4 Parish Life 43 3 Outreach 22 1 Involvement 22 1 Management/Stewardship 8 Question #2 What could we offer that you would want to engage in, support, or pray for? 61 Responses about Parish Life Adults want more chances to engage with each other and build community within the parish. Examples: Specific groups for seniors, women, men, singles, etc. 26 Responses about Outreach Ideas for adding programs with ministry partners, including ecumenical & interfaith 25 Responses about our Atmosphere Ideas about enhancing our newcomer process, coffee hour, parking, and the ambience of interior space 19 Responses about Worship Suggestions about how worship could enhance the atmosphere of St. Peter s. Examples: other style services, better hearing devices, more welcoming bulletins, & more musical opportunities. 15 Responses about Involvement Comments about improving communications about ministries and leadership opportunities in order to add volunteers. Examples: ministry fair, a ministry guide, reducing acronyms, improving clarity Question #3 What is God calling us to do or be, today, and in the future? 57 Responses about Improving existing programs Improving programs by listening to one another, listening to the community, & connecting more deeply with each other. Improving programs by honing in on what is good and do that work even better. 25 Responses about Serving local families/youth Reaching out to more families and young people, building upon strength we already have. 20 Responses about Improving evangelism There was some tension expressed about reaching out vs. focusing inward, doing more vs. refining, and growth vs. the status quo. These were by far the largest three categories of response to this question. The first three questions yielded responses that pertain mostly to functional matters as opposed to facility matters. The 42 pages of unabridged notes is being provided to vestry members to see all of these comments. Every idea and suggestion will be considered by the vestry members for further possible follow up and action. 6

7 Question #4 If money were falling from the sky, what would we want to do with our campus? Frequency of responses, including some representative comments in a few areas. Gathering Space 32 We need a larger fellowship hall. We need a kitchen located close to fellowship hall. We need a place to host Sunday coffee hour/lemonade closer to sanctuary. Classrooms 28 We need to eliminate the need for a portable classroom and more meeting space. Kitchen 23 Reconfiguration 20 Some suggestions to tear down/rebuild portions. Potential multi-use building, a.k.a. family life center. Space should reinforce our identity as a welcoming community focused on creating a rich parish life. Parking 14 Ideas included re-acquiring adjacent land to build another parking lot. Outdoor Space 11 Improving landscaping and curb appeal of the face of the church. Improving outdoor worship space. Offices 7 Organ 6 *There were also 6 responses about technology and the sanctuary. Aesthetic improvements 5 * There were also 5 responses about a storage space and a gym. There was a general theme of improving the ambiance of the buildings which would enhance parish life and newcomers experiences. Chapel 4 Roof 3 Endowment 1 Question #5 Do our current facilities reflect who we are called to be as a faith community? Yes 30% No 70% Many participants had opinions on both sides of this question. Some yes answers indicate that our facilities reflect who we are because we make it work. This expresses our culture of involvement. Those in the no column reiterated concerns about dated aesthetics, inadequate meeting/classroom space, poor nursery space, a meandering floorplan, and inadequate fellowship space to meet our current needs. These responses included a desire for the buildings to convey the same kind of atmosphere that the community conveys a welcoming place with a vibrant parish life & outreach. Question #6 How do you feel you heard the Holy Spirit speak in this conversation? It was a strong look in the mirror. The Holy Spirit is calling us to look inward in order to look outward. Don t be afraid of the change. Have courage to continue the journey as God is leading. Everyone still wants the sense of community. Nobody will let that be pushed aside in pursuit of growth. The Holy Spirit definitely wants a new roof. Almost everything we talked about is helping others a spirit of helping. I want to have this as my home, to be the best now and in the years to come. A church is not just a building. Building spiritual lives is important. We are very good at being together. We need a better being-together place. We cannot lose the fellowship. It is the glue. I m in the right place.
