1 NEW LIFE NEWS Volume 1 Issue 3 December 2012 NEW LIFE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Pastor s Page A very Merry Christmas to you! As we move into Advent I would like to bring you up to date on a few things. First, the survey results. We asked for your input last month through a survey that was in the bulletin for 3 consecutive weeks. The purpose of the survey was to get your input on where you believe New Life needs to head over the course of the next 5 years. Thank you for your input which is tremendously helpful. Without getting into a lot of depth here, there were some common themes that were very evident. Among them where such things as increased worship attendance, financial stability, Youth and Children s Ministries, and community outreach were the top 4 goals that were most evident. In January we will be looking at this in more depth and have time as a congregation to offer input and ideas through discussion groups as we continue to clearly define how God is leading and calling us all to expand God s Kingdom. Please pray over these areas of growth and be looking for how God is specifically calling you to serve or contribute as we move forward. Let me encourage you to be a possibility thinker as you pray over these areas of growth. Our goal is to arrive at a vision for New Life that is God-given, challenging, and supported by as many people as possible. Secondly, let me take a moment and say a great big thank you to all of you for your amazing generosity! Our weekly offerings are helping us catch up on our Ministry Shares. Through December we are praying that we can strengthen our Emergency Fund, support the Food Pantry, and continue to catch up our Ministry Shares. Again, thank you! Third, we are expanding and redeveloping our Children and Youth ministries and we need your help! Please contact Meredith if you are interested in helping in these areas. Watch for our children in worship, on Wednesday nights at The Gathering, and during the Children's Christmas program on Sunday Dec. 16th at 11:00AM. As the year draws to a close we approach Christmas, and as we do, we are reminded of its wonderful message. Emmanuel. God with us. He who resided in Heaven, coequal and co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, willingly descended into our world, breathed our air, felt our pain, knew our sorrows, and died for our sins. He did not come to frighten us, but to show us the way to warmth, safety, love, and hope so that we might do the same out in the world that He loves so much. Christmas is so much more than the celebration of the birth of Christ. It is also a reminder that we are not alone and have not been forgotten. May the grace and peace of Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be yours throughout this Christmas season. 2 Page 2 NEW LIFE NEWS Food For Thought Sacred Lullabye Have you visited the New Life Library since it was moved to a room in the wing of the Education? It may surprise you to learn that we have quite an inventory of books and media. It consists of a large variety of wonderful Christian based items. For adults and teens we have fiction and non-fiction books. Fiction is quite popular with some of our various readers, but what a great selection of true books we have on our shelves. The following are just a sampling of subjects; marriage, bereavement, biography, parenting, Heaven, finances (both personal and tithing), history and humor. An old fashion card catalog will help you find your choices of subject. Website Insight We also have an audio visual inventory of videos and DVD s on many subjects and entertaining movies. Check out our list in the AV notebook placed in the library. A children s shelf unit of books as well as audio visual collection of DVD s and videos is available. A notebook for these is also available. We invite you to come, sit, visit and check it out. Read, enjoy and share the treasures. Need help? Contact Joan Selesky or Carol Enyart, or drop a note in a box located on top of the card catalog file in the library. Yours in Christ, Joan Selesky Carol Joan Hearken now, O do you hear it? The sweetest song of the Spirit. Borne on angel wings above A song of everlasting Love. It s Heaven s sweetest lullabye Coming from our God Most High The Father singing to the Son... The greatest sacrifice, begun. Wrapped with love, in swaddling clothes The Father watches, for He knows... The eternal destiny of His Son Will change the life of a believing one. Angels join the chorus clear Heaven has drawn so very near. Salvation s Song for you and me Was in the heart of God, you see. Hearken to the Father s call... He gave His Son, He gave His all. Help us, Lord, to hear that song... That unto Him our souls belong! Leone Whittum August 26, 2012 And she brought forth her first born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7 Recently I was fascinated to watch my 21 month old Great-Grandson sitting on his mothers lap, and with a tiny touch of his finger they could watch a different scene on the screen of her smart phone. Surely the world of technology is changing before our eyes. And New Life UMC is keeping pace with updating their computer website to bring you the latest news and pictures of the happenings at New Life in every aspect of church events. Whether you are computer savvy or still a dinosaur the simplicity of the new website, will open the way for you to enjoy pictures and events of New Life UMC. A newly formed committee of volunteers has made great strides of late, and invites you to check it out. You will find church news, pictures of activities, the monthly calendar, and even read the entire New Life Newsletter. You can now go online to make a one time gift or set up your regular giving with just a click. The committee has plans to keep the website current, and adding many new features. I am certain you will find the information interesting and inspirational. What a wonderful way for our Snowbirds to keep connected to what is happening at New Life while you are away. New Life is now on Facebook, so you may want to check that out also. Merry Christmas with Love, Al and Leone This week features the lovely lighted trees on the Chancel as we enter the Advent / Christmas season. To help you remember, is listed on the cover of the new directory. The monthly newsletter and the weekly bulletin. Your Church wants to keep connected with you and to help new people find out what New Life has to offer. Your suggestions for the website are welcome. Shirley Frandsen

All may share in this project if you wish to help share the joy of Christmas with those alone, ill or unable to Women s Events Schedule attend regular services. In order merely to keep food on the table for this mob, the father and head of the household, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost 18 hours a day at his trade and any other paying chore he could find in the neighborhood. Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of Albrecht Durer the Elder s children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew full well that their father would never be financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the Academy. After many long discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in the mines. They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation. Albrecht s etchings, his woodcuts, and his oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works. When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht s triumphant homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enable Albrecht to fulfill his ambition. His closing words were, And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you. All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over, No...no...no...no. The Story of the Praying Hands Continued on page 5

4 Page 4 NEW LIFE NEWS Mission Work Earlier this fall eight members of three local churches gathered at Albright Camp near Reed City for a work and fellowship week. Three other members came up to work for one day. Some of the projects accomplished were: hanging screen doors in cabins, for next summer; cutting down and removing trees to enlarge a play ground area; power washing buildings; splitting camp fire wood; moving and building a roof over the camp sign; replacing facia on a building. Also, cleaning and organizing in the kitchen and dining room. The evenings were filled with fellowship, devotions and Bible discussions, much story -telling of which some might have even been true. Just a good time of sharing some fun and some very serious. A trip is planned for next year. I hope to see you there. Mel Houck (Missions Chair) P.S. Sharon Gray did her usual job of providing delicious meals. Christmas Gift Cards Circle of Friends Don t forget to order your gift cards for Christmas... 5 Page 5 NEW LIFE NEWS The Story of Praying Hands Continued from page 3 Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and then, holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look look what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less made delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother for me it is too late. More than 450 years have passed. By now Albrecht Durer s hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silverpoint sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the odd are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer s works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office. One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother s abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply Hands, but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his tribute of love The Praying Hands. The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look. Let it be your reminder, if you still need one, that no one no one - ever makes it alone! Sneak Preview Coming In January The Membership Care & Welcome Committees would like to see more interaction of the congregation. We are planning an informal Sunday Night Supper, which would include 8 adults. Are you willing to have a Sunday Night Supper, to get better acquainted with the people of the Church? We could play games, watch a football or baseball game or just visit. This would be very informal so lets get to know each other. More to come...
