1 Trinity United Methodist Church & Childcare trinitylincoln.org Kentwell Lane Lincoln, NE View from the Village A courageous community inspired by Christ Passionately turning faith to action Expanding the circle of God s love The Trinity Tower I have a picture on my desk of Heceta Head lighthouse along the Oregon Coast. The sun is shining brightly in the distance while the Fresnel Lamp casts its light out on the water. I associate lighthouses with storms and darkness. Even after reading stories about lighthouse keepers, until I saw this picture it didn t sink in that the lamp burns on bright sunny days as well as in the darkest night. Its primary purpose is to mark the path for sea travelers and guide them safely to the ir destination. For several weeks this fall I spent time with God in prayer and discernment, asking God to give us a Vision to mark our path -- a light to guide us in the direction God wants us to go as a congregation. A compelling Vision has the power to unite and excite people about a future they want to be part of. Imagine the Disciples hearing Jesus say, Go out and make Disciples of all nations! On the one hand, it sounds ridiculously impossible. On the other hand look at the world-wide church they started!! That kind of audacious, Kingdom-of-God-sized Vision can focus our energy & ignite our passion; and impossible things begin to happen. AS AN ENGAGED, PASSIONATE COMMUNITY OF CHRIST, TRINITY WILL INVEST IN EACH OTHER AND IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, MAKING AN IMPACT ON THE WORLD STARVING FOR HOPE The church staff has begun the process of mapping out a path forward using God s Vision as our guide I hope you will join them in asking, How does this Vision excite me about our church s future? In what ways will our witness to Christ be more authentic? Share your excitement with others around a table during coffee fellowship Sunday morning. And, of course, lift up prayers of gratitude to God for the gift we have been given. Rev. Nan. Commitment Sunday In the rhythms of life, we see the value in pausing to re-commit, re-covenant. This Sunday, October 28th, we will invite you to join us in that process. Bring your commitment card that will arrive in the mail this week and - after prayerfully considering how we can be more together - we will have a moment to make our covenant with each other and bless our hopes for this church. 2 TRIBUTE TO DEANNA TURNER For the past 40 years, Deanna Turner has devoted her life to Trinity s childcare ministry. As a young preschool teacher out of college, and later as the director of the childcare program, Deanna created an environment where the youngest of God s children would be loved and cherished, where they could grow and explore and learn. She was closely connected to her staff and cared deeply about them and their well-being. She loved the variety each day held. Her attention flowed from paper work to people always keeping her focus on what was best for the children and staff in her care. Deanna and her husband Richard were married at Trinity 25 years ago on October 10 th, and Trinity was their church home ever since. Their daughter Leslie is her mother s greatest joy. Deanna lived the motto, Love what you do and do what you love. Her ministry has blessed the city of Lincoln with two generations of children who received the fundamentals they needed to become happy, confident adults and leaders in our community. Thank you for a lifetime of loving God and loving God s children. Fall is a great time to plug into Ignite - Trinity's six week small group experience has begun. We'll meet through November 14th for dinner on Wednesday evenings at 6p and break into our chosen small group study from 6:30p-7:30p. Drop ins welcome. (No Ignite Halloween)

3 On Saturday, November 3 set your clock back one hour before you go to bed! November 4 we will accepting 6 new confirmands into membership at 10:30 worship. Please come be part of the welcoming! On Sunday November 11th Joel will have copies of his book available between worship services for the suggested donation of $20. He will donate half of the proceeds to Trinity. For years, access has been denied to the infamous and notorious Robber s Cave. Now, Lincoln, Nebraska s, only underground attraction is no longer shrouded in mystery. Whether you visit Robber s Cave legally or illegally, are learning about if or the first time, or are one of the thousands who have returned to the sandstone tunnels for a trip down memory lane, you will enjoy discovering all aspects of the cave s fascinating past in ROBBER S CAVE: Truths, Legends, Recollections by Joel Green. About the author: Joel Green mentors highly gifted students in writing for Lincoln Public Schools. He worked for the NBA Hall of Famer Harvey Pollack of the Philadelphia 76ers, and then became an associate editor for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He loves local history, but there is nothing Green loves more than being a father. He lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, with his wife and daughter. He continues to give public and private tours of Robber s Cave when he s not teaching.

5 Charge Conference will be Sunday, November 18th at 2:00 in Spirit Hall. This is a time when the Trinity church family comes together to review the year past and plan for the future! Come see what it s about. The Lincoln Bike Kitchen at 1635 S. 1st accepts good quality used bikes and refurbishes them to distribute at no cost to Lincoln s low income youth. This fall for the second year in a row we are encouraging Lincoln citizens to donate the bikes hanging in their garages that are no longer in use to the Lincoln Bike Kitchen. They will be overhauled in time for the holidays. You can also drop them off at Clayton Streich s home that is close to Trinity. Please contact him ahead of time, so he can arrange to be home for sure /castreich@gmail.com 7040 S. 61st The Mission Team would like to thank Beth and Al Imig and all who supported the sale of Holiday Nuts, the profit from which was $785 and will benefit the Back Pack program. The nuts will be available for pick up on Sunday, November 11 th. LPS Spring Break Mission Trip to Lydia Patterson planned for the week of March of 2019 to El Paso, TX. (5 days/airfare $450) Please join us during spring school break for our third multigenerational mission to the Lydia Patterson Institute in El Paso, Texas. We will work on maintenance projects for the school, spend time with students, visit Juarez, Mexico where many students live, and learn about the life-changing work of this United Methodist high school on the border. This trip will fill fast, so if you are interested in being part of this Trinity mission team, contact Rev. Nan, nan@trinitylincoln.org Is LPS fall break a better time for you?
