The Worship of God Introit Spirit of the Living God Chancel Choir Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me, break me, melt me, mold me, fill me. Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me Welcome and Passing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. David Lindsay Prelude Invention No. 4 Tom White Johann Sebastian Bach During the prelude, you are invited to make the transition from getting here to being here. Use this time to prepare for worship, and allow the Spirit to refresh you. Call to Worship Psalm 72 & Psalm 146 Julia Tate God, you deliver those in need when they call, the poor and those who have no helper. You save the lives of those who have no strength, You redeem their lives from oppression and violence. For your great love endures forever, You are great and full of grace. You stand as an advocate and lover of people we will praise the Lord as long as we live; blessed be the Lord, who does wondrous things. *Hymn of Praise A Mighty Fortress is Our God Number 418 EIN FESTE BURG *Please stand, if you are able. 1

Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 31:7-9 Ben Wilmes For thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel. See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. This is the Word of our Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayers of the People Erica Whitaker Prayer for Global Missions (based on Isaiah 58:6-7) In our world, people go to bed hungry. In our world, children have no home. In our world, people are held against their will. In our world, people live in the margins. In our world, people must flee their land. But, we are here to welcome. We are here to provide refuge. We are here to set the captives free. We are here to open our homes. We are here to offer food and sustenance. Christ, open our eyes to injustice. Compel us to mercy. Lead us into your Kingdom. Amen. 2

Anthem Softly and Tenderly Carla Fentress, Soloist Albert M. Martin with Chancel Choir Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me. Patiently Jesus is waiting and watching, watching for you and for me. Come home, come home, ye who are weary, come home. Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, calling, O sinner, come home. Pleading for you and for me. Mercies for you and for me. O for the wonderful love he has promised, promised for you and for me. Tho' we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, pardon for you and for me. *Hymn of Prayer I Need Thee Every Hour Number 404, Vs. 1, 4, 5 NEED *Offertory Prayer (Please stand, if able, for the offertory prayer) David Martin Offertory Choral and Fugue on a Mighty Fortress Shelley Shumate Lee Gwozdz World Hunger Banks will also be collected during the offertory today. *Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below. Praise God, above ye heavenly host. Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Children s Moment Children s Church is offered today. Sara Turpin *Gospel Reading Mark 10:46-52 Anna Mackey & (Please stand, if able, for the gospel reading) Lilliam Londono They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, *Please stand, if you are able 3

but he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me! Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart; get up, he is calling you. So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, My teacher, let me see again. Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well. Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. This is the Word of our Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Seeing Another Way Erica Whitaker Musical Meditation Please take a moment to listen to the Holy Spirit. *Hymn of Response Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us Number 405 BRADBURY *Choral Benediction and Blessing We Come to Say Thank You Pepper Choplin Thank You, O Lord, we come to say, Thank You. For all You ve done we say, Thank You, Thank You today for all the blessings You send our way. Postlude Toccata in D Minor Shelley Shumate J.S. Bach Today is Reformation Sunday. Protestants, including Baptists, celebrate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther s 95 Theses. The theses, which criticized the sale of indulgences by church officials, are considered the initial opening in the Protestant Reformation - a movement that emphasized individual relationships with God and salvation through faith alone. During worship, we will humbly confess with joyful conviction that God, through amazing grace, is not done reforming the church and the world. Martin Luther wrote the hymn A Mighty Fortress is Our God that we will sing in one voice with Protestant churches around the world. *Please stand, if you are able. 4

Hymnology: Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us arr. Dorothy A. Thrupp, 1836 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us, attributed to Englishwoman Dorothy A. Thrupp ( ), is found in almost every Christian hymnal. This hymn appears in 1005 hymnals. It is one hymn that most church members can recognize across denominational lines. What may surprise most churchgoers to know, however, is that for such a well-known and loved hymn of the Christian faith, we know little about how it was written or who the true author was. It s past aside, however, we see that whoever penned these words had a deeply theological message to share.
