2 Pastor Paragraphs Back On Track Internally Strong, Externally Focused A new year has arrived. Perhaps, you have one or a few resolutions planned to get you back on track in Maybe your trimming some areas of your life like waist lines or wasteful living. Maybe you are looking to be more involved in your community of faith and family. Maybe 2016 was crazy and this year you just want to slow life down brought many changes in our community of faith. The church went through a challenging intentional interim, an exciting pastor search process, and we all eagerly said hello to new people and solemnly said goodbye to others. We have ended a recovery year following a difficult season of internal derailment. Some great work has been done and it has taken the effort of every church and staff member to put the foundational pieces of these church train tracks back together. Well done Buechel Park! Now, we enter into This year, we are getting back on track together. We want everyone, new members and seasoned members, all back on the BPBC train and moving in the right direction. Even in the midst of challenges, we have kept our missional DNA. We continue to build relationships with our neighbors across the street, across the city and across the world. Our reputation remains as a Baptist community of faith that is externally focused. This is the year we become internally strong while staying externally focused. So, how do we get back on track together? 1. Each member fully participates by giving consistently and generously, finding your place of service and showing up and speaking up. 2. All ministry teams serve under One BPBC by planning events and programs that unite - not divide, focusing on the whole body - not just one part and committing to a ministry team out of love - not guilt. 3. Learn and Grow Together by studying our history and knowing who we are, seeking truth through scripture and the Holy Spirit, and, stretching outside our comfort zones. The next page is a brief summary of what Sundays in the pulpit and Wednesday nights will look like in I encourage you to unite together as we get back on track becoming one community of faith internally strong, externally focused. Grace & Peace, Rev. Erica Whitaker 2

5 Musical Notes Dear Church Family, 2016 was a busy and exciting year for our Music Ministry! From a very busy Lenten season, our first annual choir concert, a very successful yard sale and Arts and Crafts Market, music recital, our Many Moods of Christmas with 50 voices and a 22 piece orchestra, our BP Chorale and many anthems and handbell pieces in between, we had a wonderful year! We will continue to work hard in 2017! We thank each of you for your help and support!! We have a lot of talented people at BP and I truly hope you will consider singing or playing handbells with us this year! "It takes a village," and we need you to help us grow not only the Music Ministry but our church!!! Again, thank you for your support! See you at choir rehearsal at 7 pm on Wednesday, January 11!! 6 Community and Missions This month s mission projects: Choices, Inc. operates transitional housing services for women and families experiencing homelessness. Choices provides assistance in the areas of goal setting and appropriate referrals to promote successful transition from homeless situations to permanent housing. Each resident attends life skills training and house meetings while in the program. Once a client graduates, she can receive follow up services from a case manager for up to two years for single clients and six months for families. This year, they are needing monetary donations more than personal items in the past. Checks should be made payable to Buechel Park Baptist Church with Choices noted in the memo line. Sitio Clothing Ministry Sitio, pronounced city-oh, means I Thirst in Latin and is a clothing clearing center for Louisville that supports services like Americana. By taking care of the clients needs, Sitio is quenching the thirst of Christ. They have requested help with new and gently-used clothing items, especially for children and adult men. Mainly small and medium sizes for men; children s sizes 3-6 and shoes Drop off the new or clean items in the bins by the Education Building s elevator. No women s clothing is needed at this time. Blankets, sheets, pillowcases, household items and toys are very much appreciated. Coming up in February... We ll continue with the Sitio clothing drive and with our traditional Souper Bowl canned goods collection and valentines for Goldsmith Elementary (to start January 22). 6
7 Community and Missions Missions Update Amy and Bobbie Sparks load up the wrapped shoeboxes - EIGHTY shoeboxes - for Seneca High School and Goldsmith Elementary. We donated enough food items to SEAM for 20 Thanksgiving baskets for medium-sized families (3-5 members), along with a $15 Kroger gift card for a turkey or other meat. The total food items collected was well over 600 items, including 200 hundred perishables such as potatoes, onions, and pies. Bill Grady set up the purchase of many of the perishable items at Valu Market at cost. SEAM was able to provide Thanksgiving baskets to over 300 families in need. In December, the Church donated 60 Christmas shoeboxes for Goldsmith Elementary and another 20 for Seneca High School. Great Work BPBC!! -- Joe Caldwell, Chair Missions & Christian Life 6 pm, Friday, January 27 St. Bartholomew Church 2042 Buechel Bank Road Proceeds benefit SEAM Last year, this fun event sold out! Doors open at 6 pm, trivia begins at 7 pm. Food and non-alcoholic beverages permitted. Concessions will be available. Cost is $10 per person; 6-8 people to a table/team. 8 Garden Ministry This year the Garden Ministry harvested 16,681 lbs of vegetables and delivered them to 3 food assistance agencies, 2 churches, our elderly, and our Bhutanese neighbors. We harvested 16,681 lbs of vegetables, as follows: Cabbage: 5,267 lbs Cucumber: 362 lbs Eggplant: 1,643 lbs Green beans: 1,039 lbs Broccoli crowns: 186 lbs Okra: 179 lbs Sweet potatoes: 1,850 lbs Tomatoes: 2,198 lbs Yellow squash/zucchini: 717 lbs Peppers (sweet banana and bell): 2,106 lbs Greens (kale, collards, turnip greens): 1,134 lbs Seventeen times a group of our church members delivered vegetables to up to 24 households of our church s elderly. Our delivery people included Bettie McCormick, Sarah Condron, Roxie Hoffman, Randy Gibson, Joyce Bell, and Sara Buckner. We made a total of 55 deliveries to South Louisville Community Ministries, Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries, and the Center for Lay Ministries. These agencies, collectively, provide food assistance to over 4,000 people per month. Jeanne Crawford, Carol Thompson, and I made these deliveries. We delivered vegetables monthly to Deer Park Baptist Church and Hikes Point Christian Church. Deer Park provided the vegetables to those who come for their free meal, Clothes Closet, and Food Pantry. The offering of vegetables became an expansion of their Food Pantry. Hikes Point cooked the vegetables for their free meal. These two churches reach over 100 people per month; some of them are homeless. This year we provided garden plots to five Bhutanese families. They have shared vegetables from their gardens and cooked meals for us, and we have shared vegetables from our gardens with them. We also have provided vegetables to a Syrian refugee family a woman whose husband was killed in Syria and her 4 young children. All this has been made possible by the 8-month commitment and effort of Leonard Buckner, Carol Thompson (St. Raphael Catholic Church), Julia Tate, Kathy Leichty, Jim Bearden, Marvin Sparks, and Becky Houston (Deer Park Baptist Church). Glenda Haller and Greg & Kathy Leichty have graciously allowed us to have large gardens on their properties, and we could not grow this large volume without this additional land.
