Confession of Sins M: Dearly beloved! We have come together in the presence of God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hand, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and salvation. O come, let us worship him! Let us kneel and bow down before him. Let us confess our sins with penitent hearts, and obtain forgiveness by his infinite grace and mercy. C: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed the devices and desires of our hearts. We have offended against your holy law. We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things which we should have done. Have mercy on us, O Lord! Spare us and restore us, according to the promises you have declared to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. For his sake grant that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy name. Answer us not in judgment on our sins, but in peace and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 5 Epistle Lesson Hebrews 5: For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; 6 as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek. 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. Confessional Reading The Small Catechism The Small and Large Catechisms (1529) were written by Luther to help teach the faith in a simple way for people of all ages. We still use Luther s Catechisms to teach the Christian faith today! The Holy Spirit will keep us steadfast in the true faith through word and sacrament so that we may spend eternity with our Triune God. Small Catechism: Explanation of the Third Article I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers. On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. Gospel Lesson Mark 10: And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of

Sermon Text 1 Corinthians 11: For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

9 Kyrie Prayer of the Church M: Let us pray. Almighty Father, source of all goodness, in your loving kindness you sent your Son to share our humanity. C: We thank you that through him you have given us pardon and peace in the sacrament of holy communion. M: Eternal Savior, in love for your disciples in every age you have instituted this sacrament in which you give us your own body and blood in mystery and wonder. C: Through this heavenly feast, assure us of forgiveness, life, and salvation and unite us with the Church above. M: Sanctifying Spirit of God, we praise you for having called us by the gospel and having made us sons and daughters of God by faith in Christ Jesus. By baptism you have clothed us in his righteousness and gathered us into his flock. C: Live in us, Holy Spirit, and warm our hearts with the fire of your love. Continue to preserve us in this one true faith by the means you have chosen, the gospel in word and sacraments. M: Triune God, so often as we eat the bread and drink the cup, remove from us the soiled garments of self-righteousness and sin, and clothe us with the true righteousness purchased with the blood of Christ. C: Strengthen our faith, increase our love, especially for those with whom we share this blessed communion, and after this life grant us a place at your heavenly table, for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whose name we also pray:

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Prayer for Grace M: O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.
