1 October 2018 Another new church year begins this October. We are concluding the past church year with a wonderful service of singing and praise. But the question is How will we serve the Lord in our one hundredth and ninety-ninth year? Yes, 2020 is our 200th Anniversary of serving the Lord. There are a lot of things to do before the 200th birthday party of our church. First and foremost is deciding how we are going to celebrate. I would love to see us plan a big Homecoming and invite past members and ministers back to our celebration. Can you imagine the church full, the word being preached, the music ringing out, and the fellowship hall flowing over with food as people from our past and present enjoy one another in the Lord? To do this there must be planning. How do we reach those from our past? What must be done in order to welcome them back for such a joyous occasion? Who do we get to speak? How will we commemorate the day? How do we assure that we have enough food for all? We will need all hands on deck if we are to make this a success. I would like to see us plan some community events for our 200th year. It is not enough to bring back members from the past. We also need to ask how we can assure those around us that our desire is to be here for another 200 years? How do we let the community know we care? How can we continue to make a difference in New Albany? To reach old and new alike, we must plan and we must commit. We have enough love to go around for past, present and future members, we just need a plan about how to share that love for all to benefit from it. We must communicate to all our love for people. We need to be creative. The old ways do not work anymore or we would be full of people every Sunday. We need to be compassionate opening our doors and expecting people to pop in is not enough. We need to go to them with love and acceptance and bring them in with a feeling of family that wants more and more family members every day. As we begin this new year and look forward to another century, these questions are a must. Do we have what it takes? Will we commit to the tasks at hand? Will we reach out in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and say First Baptist New Albany is not done yet? I say YES, WE WILL! What will you say? Pastor Jim 1 October s Verse of the Month: Isaiah 40:31 (NLT) But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. Handbell Choir will begin Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5:00p. There s room for you if you would like to play. Basic rhythm-reading ability is helpful, but not necessary to ring with us. Current ringers will play along side you and will help teach anything you need to know with their trademark humor and grace. We have several openings and would love to have you join us. We meet on Level 2 of Education Building in Room 1. See Tammie if you re interested in playing or have questions.
2 October 9 & 23 at 7:00 p.m. All ages invited!! We meet at 7:00 in the kitchen on the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesdays each month. We study the Bible for one hour and then share light refreshments that we bring. We are studying Titus and Philemon. We all enjoy meeting, studying and fellowshipping and would love for you to bring your Bible and join us. Your help is needed for the Halloween Treat Night on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Please come and decorate a table in the Fellowship Hall and pass out candy as children walk through. The event runs from 6 to 8:00, so we recommend your table is decorated by 5:30. The church will be open Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 6 to 7:00 if you d like to set up early. We need donations of individually wrapped candy, too. Boxes will be around church for your donations. Monetary gifts should be placed in an envelope marked Halloween Treats and placed in offering plate. Make checks out to First Baptist Church. If you have questions, please see Theresa Collins. Wednesday, Oct.31 6 to 8:00p FBC Fellowship Hall Harvest Homecoming Parade Saturday, October 6 Our Food Booth will sell hot dogs, chili dogs, chili with crackers, nachos, desserts and drinks on the sidewalk in front of our Education Building beginning at 11:00. The proceeds will benefit Operation Christmas Shoebox Project. Volunteers needed to set up, sell/serve food and clean up on parade day. If you have questions, please see Bill Owen or call him at (812) Tammie s Tidbit: Starting Tuesday, October 16, a local church s Ladies Bible Group will be meeting in our Fellowship Hall from 9 to 11:30 every Tuesday morning. We would like to thank everyone for prayers, cards, visits and good thoughts during our ordeal. In prayer, Dean & Norma Richey We would like to thank all who were able to attend Mom's 90th birthday celebration, either in person or in spirit. Seeing so many familiar faces helped to make her day even more special. We're grateful to have First Baptist, Pastor Jim and Tammie, and the entire congregation to support us on this special occasion. The Ruth Richey Family Come to FBC for a safe and FREE alternative for trick-or-treaters. The children will walk from table to table to see the Halloween-themed decorations and receive candy and treats. Hot dogs and drinks will be handed out to everyone. 2
3 The theme for the 2018 World Mission Offering is You are the salt of the earth. (Matt. 5:13) Salt, as ordinary and plentiful as it is, possesses a very special and unique power when added to foods. Unlike any other seasoning, salt unlocks the subtle flavors, enhancing and bringing new sensations to our taste buds. When our Lord says to his followers, you are the salt of the earth, he is urging them to go into the whole world and enhance the good that he is doing so others can be touched by the power of the saving grace of God. As followers of Christ, we are the salt of the earth, seasoned with the love of the gospel and called to carry that love to all the earth. This World Mission Offering season focuses on three Ministry Priorities: Health and Wellness, Abolishing Global Slavery and Economic and Community Development. While this does not include all the ministries of International Ministries, these serve to illustrate some of what God is doing worldwide through their 120 global servants, 900+ volunteers, 43 home staff and 240+ global Christian partners. Our gifts to the World Mission Offering powerfully connect us to all of the global servants and ministries of the Lord through International Ministries. Envelopes will be in October bulletins. We need 7-oz. boxes of mac & cheese dinners for the 2018 SEJ Christmas Gift Bags! Collection boxes are in the Sanctuary Foyer and Education Building. If you wish to donate money, place donation in an envelope marked SEJ Project and place it in the offering plate. Thanks for your help! Christmas Shoe Box is a mission project sponsored by our youth group to send gifts to needy children overseas. Please place your monetary donation in an envelope marked Christmas Shoe Box and place in the offering plate (make checks out to First Baptist Church). Each shoebox costs $20 to fill and send. We have a few folks that give items to the Hope Southern Indiana Food Pantry monthly. If you would like to join them, bring items and place in boxes around the church. The Pantry continues to need peanut butter, pasta dinners, canned meat, canned vegetables, canned fruit, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. PLEASE check the expiration dates! Let s continue to support the food pantry! Mission Outreach Opportunity No talent required! We re making fleece scarves for the SEJ children for winter. We will meet on Monday, October 15 from 6 to 7:30p in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is invited to come help! Bring scissors if you can. There s something you can do cut or fold. June 20 September 24, 2018 Income: $ 20, Expenses: ($ 23,048.53) Cash on hand: $ (2,145.53) 3

Approved a request from Mrs. Tammie Ivey for 5 weeks of vacation to match her husband s. G. Reviewed our current budget and made recommendations for the budget. H. Discussed the position of Director of Finance, the post last held by RoxAne Hosea. After speaking with Mrs. Ivey, she agreed to take this position, providing we get a new Director of Music. I. The Council recommends hiring two people: one part-time Director of Music and one part-time Director of Youth and Outreach or whatever title is appropriate. The Council reviewed our current information on the Director of Music, made modifications and put out a job description to various electronic job lists. The council reviewed several resumes and picked five for review. The interview board will be made up of Pastor Jim Ivey, Mrs. Ivey, Mrs. Judy Collins and at least one Council member. All Council members are encouraged to attend. J. Passed out the job description for Director of Youth and Outreach. Asked all Council members to review and make all additions, deletions and changes that they feel necessary. Also, we want measurable goals for this position. K. The Council approved a request from Mrs. Theresa Collins to do Christmas wrapping for donations in the Education Building - date to be determined. The money will go for the Hope Southern Indiana Food Pantry. Note she received a lot of free Christmas wrapping paper. 2. Ballots for Church Council Members were handed out and vote was taken. Congregation voted to accept the members on the ballot. Congratulations were given to our new Church Council: Cindy Burks-Sanders, Linda Jackson, Joyce Redden and Donie Thomas. 3. The Budget was presented to be approved. The new position of Director of Youth and Outreach was added. Most of the personnel received a 3% raise. Utilities and discipleship was raised. A question from the floor: If we aren t currently meeting our budget, how can we afford to raise the budget? Earl Hadley explained that we have some bequest money in reserve if needed, and also that some budget items may not even be used we just need to have it noted in case it s needed. The weekly need for will be $2, Cindy Burks-Sanders moved that the budget be approved. The motion was seconded by Joyce Redden and was passed by the congregation unanimously. 4. Pastor Ivey said that the Lord will supply all our needs; that we need to trust Him. He closed the meeting with prayer. 4

Jacob was more famous than his brother, Esau, because Esau sold Jacob his birthmark in exchange for some pot roast. Jacob had a son named Joseph who wore a really loud sports coat. Another important Bible guy is Moses, whose real name was Charlton Heston. Moses led the Israel Lights out of Egypt and away from the evil Pharaoh after God sent ten plagues on Pharaoh s people. These plagues included frogs, mice, lice, bowels, and no cable. God fed the Israel Lights every day with manicotti. Then he gave them His Top Ten Commandments. These include: don t lie, cheat, smoke, dance, or covet your neighbor s stuff. Oh, yeah, I just thought of one more: Humor thy father and thy mother. One of Moses best helpers was Joshua who was the first Bible guy to use spies. Joshua fought the battle of Geritol and the fence fell over on the town. To be continued in next newsletter.
