9 OUTREACH & SOCIAL CONCERNS MINISTRY 4 QUESTIONS ABOUT OUTREACH AND SOCIAL CONCERNS 1. Why is there a need for Outreach and Social Concerns? We often hear that we live in a broken world. What does that actually mean? Very simply, it means that we live in a world that is at odds with God s view. The imposition of Man s view upon God s creation (be it the natural world, the ordering of society or the cultivation of self) leads to brokenness. Here are some examples of the dichotomy between Man s view as expressed in quotes and pop culture versus God s view. Man s view reference God s view reference Work is boring! Monday blues! TGIF! So no one told you life was gonna be this way Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A. (dead on arrival) - FRIENDS theme song Called to work, to glorify God. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, - Col 3:23 Man s view ends in Brokenness: Depression, monotony, lack of purpose. There is no eternity, only today s pleasures. Carpe Diem! Seize the day! Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today - Imagine, John Lennon There is a God, and He is eternity. The fool says in his heart, There is no God. - Psalm 14:1 Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God s work from beginning to end. - Eccl 3:11 Man s view ends in Brokenness: Living with no consequences. Endless debt, seeking present pleasures instead of building a future.

10 I, me and myself first and foremost. Social media likes; selfies with famous people; pictures of all the fancy food I m eating. Service to one another. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace. - 1 Peter 4:10 Man s view ends in Brokenness: Turning a blind eye to the poor and needy (unless we can let everyone know about all the good works we are doing anonymously!) The world around us is for exploitation and profit! Many companies live from quarter to quarter on the basis of top and bottom line earnings. The earth belongs to God, and we are merely stewards for a time. The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me. - Leviticus 25:23 Man s view ends in Brokenness: Uncontrolled exploitation of the world around us, leading to pollution and mass extinction, unclear water, disease and war. These are just some examples to illustrate that what we call as brokenness arises from a dichotomy between God s view and Man s view. 2. Why should we be Concerned? Even while the Israelites were still in Egypt, God gave specific instructions for the Passover and its commemoration for generations to come. 1 In time to come, Moses would also give instructions to the Israelites for the cancellation of debts (Deut 15:1), giving to the poor (Deut 15:7), and the freeing of slaves (Deut 15:12) as a response to God setting them free from the bondage of Egypt. (Deut 15:14 - Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you.15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.) The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, states: 2:1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time,gratifying 1 Exodus 12:14 - This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord a lasting ordinance.

11 the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Therefore, being Concerned is but a necessary response to God s grace in our lives. 3. What does the Bible say about being Concerned? God calls us to do real, tangible work. Expressing support through words (or social media) is all well and good, but it is (in most cases) little more than a modern, digital equivalent of Go in peace; keep warm and well fed which the Apostle James expressly warned against. James 2:14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. Instead, we are called to action, no matter how small. Matthew 10: 42 - And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward. Action is something tangible (a cup of cold water) that is a clear expression of deed and not just words or thoughts (or likes)! 4. When can we stop being Concerned?

12 This is the easiest question of all to answer. Until the day comes where justice rolls on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream (Amos 5:24), we do not stop being concerned and working toward mending the brokenness, such that Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as in Heaven! 5. Call to Action a) Identify What has God placed in your heart to be Concerned about? What are some Concerns surrounding you? b) Analyze Why do these Concerns arise? Are there organizations already acting? What can be improved? c) Act How can I be involved? Take that first step! Identify Analyze Act BONUS QUESTION! What are we, Aldersgate Methodist Church, called to be Concerned about, as a congregation? We have, in the past and at present, been Concerned about the Young (Tuition Ministry); the Elderly (Bethany Home); the Poor (Dover rental flats); and the Stranger (collections for migrant workers) to name a few. As we grow together in faith, it is important that we move together as a Church in our engagement. In order to do so, we need you to join us in prayerfully considering what areas AMC is called to be Concerned about.
