3 Pastoral Office (626) Father Mark s Corner Words of Wisdom The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today's first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is "sharper than any two-edged sword." We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God's commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. PARISH STEWARDSHIP NEWS World Mission Sunday NEXT WEEKEND, Oct , our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. We are blessed to welcome Fr. Jude Umeobi of the Diocese of Awka, Nigeria, who will speak at our Masses next weekend. Our focus for this year s World Mission Sunday is Through Youth To The World: Voices for Mission. We are reminded that our mission hearts begin at our baptism, to go forth and proclaim the Gospel. It s this proclamation that unites us all in our commitment to continue the work of Jesus Christ. World Mission Sunday provides an opportunity for recommitment. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and be generous in next week s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Envelopes are in the pews and may be placed in the collection basket. Please make checks payable to St. Luke Church. Thank you for your generous support. Community Table Open Today Thank you to the St. Luke Family Ministry, who will host the Community Table TODAY, Sunday, Oct. 14, Everyone is welcome to stop by hospitality after the 8:30 and 10:30 am Masses in the St. Luke Plaza to enjoy a doughnut and a cup of coffee. Stay and enjoy fellowship with your family and your parish family and learn about our parish ministries. The Community Table is more than dollars and doughnuts. It is a wonderful way to continue the morning after sharing a meal together at the Eucharist. About the St. Luke Family Ministry The St. Luke Family Ministry focuses on building community and promoting fellowship through activities such as a Halloween Fun Night, an Easter Egg Hunt, and Summer Movie Nights. All parishioners are welcome to help plan events. Having young children is not required for this ministry, as a family can come in many varieties. Visit the Community Table to learn more. The Word for Women Bible Reflection and Social Justice Committee will host the Community Table on Sunday, Oct. 21. Crib Project Supports SGV Pregnancy Help Center During October - Respect Life Month - parishioners have an opportunity once again to support the Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel Valley in Temple City by contributing to the parish s annual Crib Project. This center helps and supports approximately 150 to 200 women in pregnancy crisis situations each month, so the need is great. Our Crib Project begins THIS WEEKEND, Oct. 6-7, and will continue until Sunday, Oct. 28, after the evening Mass. To participate, select a slip from the crib located in the Vestibule and bring your gift back the next Sunday. Please do not deliver items to the Pastoral Office. Donations, especially larger items, may be delivered to the Pregnancy Help Center, located at 5626 Rosemead Blvd., Temple City. Hours: Monday- Thursday, Noon-6:00 pm; Closed Friday-Sunday. For more information, contact Judy at (626) or jmccarthy1425@ sbcglobal.net. 3

Meetings Parties Retreats Concerts/Performances Parish Hall and Meeting Rooms Available for Rent Call for a tour or to book an event. (626) The Importance of Emotional Boundaries We discuss the importance of physical boundaries quite a bit, teaching children to understand privacy and the difference between good touches and bad touches. But emotional boundaries are just as important, if not more so, because abuse victims are often manipulated into trusting and believing their abusers. Predators can violate emotional boundaries fairly easily, worming their way into a child s life and creating a false relationship. Parents should talk to their children about appropriate boundaries for their emotional relationships with teachers, the parents of their friends, and other adults in their lives. Children do not always have the emotional maturity to set their own boundaries, so parents should be on the lookout for anything that seems inappropriate or off about the relationships their children form with other adults. To learn more about emotional boundaries and how to maintain them, jvienna@la-archdiocese.org. 4
