3 Pastoral Office (626) Father Mark s Corner Today, we are asked to fill out our Together in Mission pledge forms to support our poorer parishes and schools. This has been a wonderful program that has truly benefited so many. Our 2018 challenge has the theme of Let Us Love one another. The faith community of St. Luke has always responded very generously to the needs beyond our parish and I am grateful for your generous hearts. Our goal this year is approximately $67,000 and I am hoping that we will not only raise the goal and exceed it as we have done in the past; but, that we get more of our parishioners to participate in achieving our goal. Only 300 families committed to making our goal the past few years. Just think if were able to get another 100 families to pledge any amount! Let us join Together in Mission to love one another and make and fulfill our pledge to Christ s poor. Today, we commit once again to helping those outside our parish boundaries I am grateful for the many gifts God has bestowed on us as a faith community. I hope and pray that each of you will recognize the blessings in your own life and may that be your inspiration to thank God and help out here at St. Luke and in the larger Church. I have found in my life journey that my own generosity is always returned in unexpected ways. Spiritual Reflection: As we approach our giving to charity, parish and Together in Mission, may God help me to see the many blessings in my life, to think of others and to become an imitator of His selfless giving for the life of others. Parish Stewardship News 2018 Together in Mission Catholic Appeal This Year s Theme: Let Us Love THIS WEEKEND, Feb , is Together in Mission s Commitment Sunday. Archbishop Gomez invites us to make our annual commitment to help those parishes and schools that need our support to continue serving the spiritual needs of our neediest communities. Through their ministries and education supported by funds provided by the annual appeal, recipient parishes and schools are able to reach out to their communities and make the message of God s love known to those around them. The funds we collect will directly benefit more than 250,000 of our Catholic brethren. We are in this together the mission of helping our fellow brothers and sisters. Our parish has been tasked with raising $67,000. Please prayerfully consider sharing the abundant gifts that God has shared with each of us. Envelopes can be found in the pews. For those that have made gifts in the past, be on the lookout for a special mailing from our Archdiocesan leaders asking you to renew your gift. Thank you for your past generosity School Year Registration Open Registrations for the School Year (TK-8th Grade) are now being accepted. Please call the office prior to confirm if any are needed for that week s dinner. Thank you! Lenten Fasting and Abstinence Observance Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and Lenten Fridays by Catholics age 14 and older. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by Catholics who are 18 to 59 years of age. (Fast one full meal; two smaller meals. Abstinence: No meat.) Lunar New Year and Lenten Observance The celebration of the lunar new year, significant to many Catholics of Asian descent, is observed this year on the first days of the season of Lent. In view of the importance attached to these celebrations, it is helpful to re-affirm the role of penance in the life of the Church. From the example and teaching of the Savior, Jesus Christ, all the faithful are called to repent and to believe in the Gospel, a true renunciation of self and carrying one s cross in the footsteps of Jesus. The traditional triad of prayer fasting works of charity are the fundamental ways of complying with the divine precept of penitence. The Archbishop of Los Angeles joins the faithful celebrating the heritage of all Asian Catholics, reminding all the faithful that the decision of not abstaining from meat on the first Friday of Lent this year s Lunar New Year celebration should be replaced by another appropriate form of penance. Will Your Child Be Next?! ~ How We Can Combat Human Trafficking Human Trafficking is the fastest growing illegal enterprise in the U.S, including in the Los Angeles area. In a 2013 study of 300 teens, 1 in 3 middle schoolers and 1 in 9 high schoolers had been solicited for the purpose of becoming a victim of human sex trafficking. Unless we educate our children on how these predators work and how they can protect themselves, they are vulnerable. Please join us on Tuesday, March 6, at 7:00 pm in the St. Luke Parish Hall to find out what we as a faith community can do to fight human trafficking of vulnerable populations such as poor families, runaway or homeless youth, victims of violence, and our own unsuspecting young people. Our speaker is Susan Patterson, author of "How You Can Fight Human Trafficking, Over 100 Ways to Make a Difference." Susan's book has been recommended by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to equip us to respond to the request of Pope Francis to take action against human trafficking. Questions?
