UPCOMING EVENTS Youth Ministry Paper Drive Fundraiser The St. Luke Youth Ministry Program will host a Paper Drive on campus THIS WEEKEND, Saturday, Sept. 22, 8:00 am-6:00 pm; and Sunday, Sept. 23, 8:00 am-8:00 pm. The fundraiser supports our scholarship program for high school and junior high students.newspapers, books, magazines and cardboard boxes are welcome. Questions? Food Pantry Weekend The Parish s Food Pantry Weekend for the month of September is THIS WEEKEND, Sept As a result of your continued support, we are able to provide wholesome food to 50+ households each month throughout the year. THANK YOU! We are requesting donations of the following items for this month's distribution: dry cereal, canned chicken, canned tuna, canned fruit and vegetables, canned soup, peanut butter and jelly. These items can be brought to Mass or to the Pastoral Office during the week. Monetary donations may be made using the blue St. Vincent de Paul envelopes found in the pews. Please make checks payable to "St. Vincent de Paul." Our next food distribution is Friday, Sept. 28. If you know of anyone in the Parish Community that is in need of this help, please invite them to call SVdP at (626) Halloween Family Fun Night The St. Luke Family Ministry will host the eighth annual Halloween Fun Night on Saturday, Oct. 6. For people of all ages, it will feature trick-or-treating; movies; cupcake decorating; face painting; a GIANT slide; great, inexpensive food, and more! Come to the 5:30 pm Saturday evening mass - in costume - and enjoy a wonderful Halloween-themed evening afterward! We are seeking donations of Halloween candy to help defray the costs. St. Vincent de Paul Bundle Sunday The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be at our parish on Sunday, Oct. 7, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm in the North Parking Lot for Bundle Sunday. We are asking you to please bring usable clothing, shoes, linens, and housewares. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul serves the needy in our Archdiocese through their center for the homeless, the summer camp for children, and the Thrift Store with its free distribution program and low discount prices, for over 100 years. Please show your support by your generosity! Your contributions are tax deductible. The Society is in need of furniture and large appliances, but for heavy items, please call (800) Faith Formation Discussion Series Resumes Join us for the second year of Footsteps in Faith, our Faith Formation Discussion Series, as we explore the Mass with Bishop Robert Barron's video series on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 7:00-8:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Through video and discussion, we will learn the meaning of each part of the Mass. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. Blessing of the Animals All are invited to a Blessing of the Animals with Father Mark A. Strader, pastor, on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 9:45 am at the lunch tables next to the Parish Hall. Please bring your animals leashed or in a cage for a blessing. The blessing will not tame the beast within - please take your animals home after the blessing. The Church has no accommodations for animals.

3 Pastoral Office (626) Father Mark s Corner In the month of September we celebrate Catechetical Sunday! We held our Catechetical Blessing last weekend. What is catechesis? Simply put, catechesis is the sharing of the Gospel story as it has been handed down to us. We all have a story to share as well. The intertwining of these stories of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and our life journey are what attract others to the Christian faith as they witness the actions of Christ through us. Having faith without works, we hear from St. James, is dead. In other words, we might find ourselves sitting in Church on Sunday as a dutiful action; however, if we are not acting on that faith it might as well be dead. While we honor those today who teach our Catholic faith to all ages in our parish community in the position of catechists we must also realize that WE are all called to be catechists by the very example of sharing our story, our journey of Christ living within us and causing us to act in the interest of others. So, my friends step forward to share your story: greet the stranger in the pew today, go up to a catechist and say, thank you, pray for those who brought you to faith or continue to inspire it. Finally, we all know families with children in our educational programs here who are not here today and yet demand the sacraments of the Church when they demand them. We do not judge them but, let s challenge their lack of action in living their faith and to get their priorities in order and give true life to their children. Faith Practice: Proclaim the Gospel with your lives. Fr. Nick Retirement Reception All parishioners are invited to say so long to Fr. Nick next weekend as he enters into full-time retirement and moves to his place in Nevada. We thank him for his couple of years of ministry to our parish as he eases into his new life of retirement. As is Archdiocesan policy, St. Luke Parish has gifted Fr. Nick with the gift of the parish car to take with him into retirement. Please join us TODAY, Sunday, Sept. 23, following the 8:30 and 10:30 am Masses in the Plaza Area for a reception for him. NEWSand NOTES Program Registration Information Registration for Confirmation Year 1 & Year 2, Family Catechesis, Home Church, and Preschool Programs is still being accepted by appointment only through Thursday, Sept. 27. Please call (626) to make your appointment. Registration may not be turned into the Pastoral Office. Classes have begun for the year. Liturgy Notes How Do We Treat the MESSENGER? Let's not be too hasty in defining who is "the wicked one" and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don't like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don't like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. Any students in Grades 4-8 who are interested in becoming an Altar Server can contact Miss Tiffany Desy at miss.desy.4@gmail.com. It is a wonderful opportunity for youth to be involved in a Mass Ministry. Trainings will be held in the church on Friday, Sept. 28, at 3:30 pm, and Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:00 am. Students only need to attend one training. 40 Days for Life Kick-Off Rally During the 40 Days for Life campaign from September 26 through November 4, please consider committing to 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, along with other Christians throughout our country. For those who feel called to participate in peaceful, prayerful vigils, our community location is the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood, 4786 North Peck Road, El Monte. A kick-off rally will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7:00 pm at the El Monte Planned Parenthood location. The Crafting Angel Group is going strong preparing to brighten up the Christmas holiday for those in our city who are ill, homebound or impoverished. We are a small group of delightful women who devote two hours per week working at the home of Emily Avila. All are welcome! The goal is to complete approximately 600 simple crafts that will be distributed at the beginning of December to various sites within Temple City. During this process we try to support each other in thought, action and prayer. Join us for fun, refreshments and the opportunity to serve the less fortunate. Children and Youth Programs implemented throughout the Archdiocese of LA Every year, students at Catholic elementary and high schools, religious education, confirmation and youth ministry programs in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles receive age-appropriate child abuse prevention and reporting training. The Empowering God s Children Program is designed for Kindergarten through 12th grade students. This program teaches children and young people to understand appropriate and inappropriate boundaries and gives them the tools that empower them to take action and report if they feel uncomfortable, scared or confused. Youth Nights are for Junior High & High School teens to make new friends, learn about their faith, socialize with other teens, and pray with other teens. The format includes: bible study, fun nights, prayer/ adoration nights, open topics and many other events.
