Father Mark s Corner Living Branches The Gospel and second reading for this Fifth Sunday of Easter emphasize the need for us to remain in Christ, and he in us. This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God's own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: "And his commandment is this: we should believe... and love one another" (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ's life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul's fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord's Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 8 April 29, 2018 AROUND TOWN To Jesus Through Mary Retreat Pauline Books and Media Center in Culver City is sponsoring To Jesus through Mary, a retreat with Fr. Lawrence Shelton on Saturday, May 19. We long to have an intimate relationship with Jesus; Mary helps us do this. After all, she received Jesus in her own body and helps us know Jesus better and receive him into ourselves in the Eucharist. In this retreat, Fr. Shelton helps us realize Mary s place in God s saving plan and we are led to cherish her and our prayer to her. This leads us more deeply into a loving union with Jesus through Mary. The retreat will be held on May 19, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., with Mass available at 4:00 p.m. at Pauline Books & Media, 3908 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City. Donation: $30. Lunch included. For more information or to register, contact (310) Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries The cherished Catholic Funeral Tradition and burial in consecrated ground, among fellow believers, is the final expression of our faith as Catholics and it is the sacred right, privilege and calling of every Catholic. Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries have played a vital role in Southern California since the time of the Spanish Missions. Today, eleven cemeteries and six mortuaries serve the members of our Archdiocese, each connecting us with our history and Christian ancestry. And because they are a responsibility of the church, Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries ensure a high level of care that will endure long after that of cemeteries under private or commercial auspices. There is a Catholic Cemetery & Mortuary located within convenient reach of every Catholic family in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
