Excellence in education both public and private is like a high tide, raising all boats, affecting everyone around us. Excellence and commitment to superb education and value-centered education is a pearl beyond price, to put it biblically. We have had an excellent school here in Ashland for 65 years. Certainly, it looks much different in each succeeding generation. Why? Because times and circumstances change. The small rooms with religious women pioneering education at the foundation of Catholic schools in our country gave way to larger schools, greater technology, an increase in the number of lay men and women who have dedicated themselves to passing on the best of our tradition, and a lively faith within the context of a superb education across the curriculum. Catholic education mattered in It matters even more in Back in 1953, the culture in which we lived gave great support to faith and religious upbringing in the home. Sundays were days of rest and days to attend church services. Sadly, that is no longer the case. Catholic schools used to cost very little due to the commitment of religious sisters. That, too, has changed. Yet, in the Diocese of Cleveland, our schools are quite a bit less in cost than in many other dioceses in the country due to the support of fellow parishioners and those who believe in the importance of learning within a Catholic environment, an environment of faith and service to others, an environment where children can learn to pray openly and gladly. With the advent of ever more complex styles of technology and the changing nature and size of families in which more parents are working full time, parents still see the importance of Catholic education to help young ones deal with the realities of growing up in the early 21 st century with eyes of faith. This is a gift of a truly Catholic perspective in science, language, use of technology, etc. a gift that can only be given once, and a gift that will last a lifetime. Now we have the indispensable addition of Catholic Pre- School to enhance the learning and formation of the early years. Parents rely on this key experience to set their sons and daughters on the path to success early and strongly. What will Catholic schools look like in the coming years? Well certainly, they will look differently as we meet the needs of future generations. Change is part of life. But the essential values of Catholic education will never change: faith, the dignity of all persons, prayer and sacraments, formation to service, excellence in every area of curriculum. The families of our area have superb choices in education, Catholic and public. And having such choices means that we don t compete in the existence of schools. Rather, we help one another to strive for the greatest of ideals and keep one another in sharp focus. A community with choices for Catholic and public schools offers so much to families and enriches the community immeasurably. To put it succinctly: it s a BOTH/AND, not EITHER/OR. People are often surprised to discover that Catholic education can be so affordable. How did they discover this? They asked! Don t hesitate to find out how you can give this gift to your children. We are committed at St. Edward to make Catholic education a reality for those who desire it. We want to make the sacrifice along with you. We cannot forget this: Our forebears back in 1953 used the tools they had available to them and the strength of their ideals and goals to create the choice of a Catholic school for their children. They did so well and strongly. That model has changed due to circumstances of life, but Catholic education is still needed. The choices we make for education are still of greatest importance. Now it is up to us to use the tools at our disposal and creatively maintain the choices for schools that have been available from the last century to the present day. I could go on and on, but you have to see the school to believe it. That is why the open house this weekend is so important. St. Edward, pray for us. Treu in Christus, faithfully in Christ, Fr. Rod

Around the age of nine, St. John experienced a series of spiritual dreams that influenced him profoundly. In his first dream, he saw a large group of poor young boys who were blaspheming God. A voice in the dream told him that he would have to win over these boys with gentleness and kindness. Later in life, this dream would become a reality for St. John Bosco, because as a young priest in Turin, Italy he visited the local prison in which he saw many young boys as inmates. He began a ministry to help these boys avoid being sent to prison. He met them were they worked and instructed them in the Catholic faith. He looked after their needs and fought for their rights from employers. St. John s work was met with opposition, even by the clergy, however, his work flourished, and the boys he helped continued to serve at the Oratory, which he founded after St. John died.
