For more information, please contact Nancy Pauly at $ 12, , , , Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday. This year Ash Wednesday is also culturally celebrated as Valentine s Day. This year, start Lent off right, bring a date and get your ashes! Lent is the forty-day liturgical season of fasting, special prayer and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. The name "Lent" is from the Middle English Lenten and Anglo-Saxon Lenten, meaning spring; its more primitive ecclesiastical name was the "forty days," tessaracoste in Greek. The number "forty" is first noted in the Canons of Nicaea (A.D. 325), likely in imitation of Jesus' fast in the desert before His public ministry (with Old Testament precedent in Moses and Elijah). By the fourth century, in most of the West, it referred to six days' fast per week of six weeks (Sundays were excluded); in the seventh century the days from Ash Wednesday through the First Sunday were added to make the number forty. The following are some items to remember: Days of Abstinence: No meat can be eaten on Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays during Lent. This applies to all Catholics 14 and older. Days of Fast: Only one full meal is permitted on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for Catholics between 18 and 59. Two smaller meals are permitted, but the small meals should not equal a second full meal. Drinking coffee, tea and water between meals is allowed. Snacks between meals are not allowed. Ask Catholics what they're doing for Lent this year, and they'll probably tell you that they are giving up a favorite food, a favorite pastime or anything else they really love but isn't essential in their lives. Giving up something for Lent fosters self-discipline and tempers our desires. It is a form of fasting. It is a form of penance. It promotes spiritual growth. If you're giving up something for Lent, that's great. But think also about the possibility of doing something positive to bolster your spiritual life and make the world a better place. Look for ways that you can increase your knowledge of your faith, strengthen your spiritual life or perform special acts of mercy and kindness at home, at work, in your parish or in your community. One common spiritual activity that many people pray are the Stations of the Cross. Telling the story of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus was an important part of the early Christian's experience. In the late fourth century, people began making pilgrimages to the Holy Land, where they would follow the path that Jesus took to Calvary. During the Middle Ages, when outbreaks of war made it impossible for people to travel to the Holy Land, people created a Via Dolorosa, or "Sorrowful Way," in their towns and villages. They erected paintings or sculptures depicting the Passion of Christ along a processional route or inside a church. By the mid- 18th century, the number of stations was fixed at 14 and the devotion known as the Stations of the Cross, also called the Way of the Cross, became widespread. Here are 10 more tips to make the season more meaningful: 1. Slow Down - Set aside 10 minutes a day for silent prayer or meditation. It will revitalize your body and your spirit. 2. Read a good book - You could choose the life of a saint, a spiritual how-to, an inspirational book or one of the pope's new books. 3. Be kind - Go out of your way to do something nice for someone else every day. 4. Get involved - Attend a Lenten spiritual program. We will be offering a series on the Sacraments and the Bible. Check it out! 5. Volunteer at your parish - Whether it's the parish fish fry or cleaning the church, it will give you a chance to help others. 6. Reach out - Invite an inactive Catholic to come with you to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday. 7. Pray - Especially for people you don't like and for people who don't like you. 8. Tune out - Turn off the television and spend quality time talking with family members or friends. 9. Clean out closets - Donate gently used items to help someone in need. 10. Donate There are many opportunities during Lent to make a financial contribution to needy charities with money, clothing or supplies. Remember, bring a date, get your ashes! St. Edward, pray for us. To register visit Since I joined St. Vincent de Paul last spring, I have found the work we do very rewarding. The clients we help are oftentimes struggling to pay utility bills and in danger of having the heat or the electric turned off. Sometimes they don t have much food or supplies at home, and we offer them a bag of supplies that one of our members takes the time to make up for us, using items from the Tub Weekends or those that she finds on sale at local grocery stores. When a client needs furniture, we have a member we can call on who helps them with what we have in our storage. When all the other resources from social agencies such as the Kroc Center or the Salvation Army are exhausted, many times they call in to our hotline reaching out for help. We call them back to determine what kind of financial help they need and what we can do to assist them. Many times, when we meet with them, we will pray with them. There are times when they are overcome with emotion and cry, out of shame or gratefulness or frustration with their situation. We are usually there just to listen and be there in whatever capacity we can be. If you feel a calling toward this ministry of helping others less fortunate than ourselves, St. Vincent de Paul is the group for you. We hold meetings the third Tuesday each month from 1-3 p.m. If that time does not suit your schedule, you can still meet with a mentor from our group to teach you about what we do and what our duties are when we are on call every couple of months. During this first apparition, the Lady remained silent while Bernadette prayed the rosary, Bernadette described the Lady as very young with a white robe, a blue sash, and a yellow rose on each foot. Bernadette had several apparitions at the grotto, during which Our Lady asked that a chapel be built and that people come to the grotto in procession. During one apparition, Our Lady became very serious and uttered these words, Penance, penance, penance. Pray to God for sinners. Because of Our Lady s words, the central message of Lourdes has become prayer, penance, and praying for the conversion of sinners. Here is what happened on a few of the apparitions: February 18-Our Lady told Bernadette, I do not promise you happiness in this world but in the other. February 19-Bernadette brings her lighted candle to the grotto and falls into an ecstasy. The crowd watches in amazement as the candle melts down into her hands and she is not burned by the flame. This became known as the Miracle of the Candle. February 20-Our Lady teaches Bernadette a personal prayer. This prayer remained a secret between Bernadette and Our Lady. Bernadette would never divulge the prayer. February 27-Our Lady asks Bernadette to wash in the spring. Bernadette dug into the mud until a trickle of water appeared. This natural spring still flows today, even curing some people of physical illness. March 25-Our Lady reveals her name: I am the Immaculate Conception! Bernadette became a nun in the order of the Sisters of Charity at Nevers, France. Her body lies totally incorrupt in the convent chapel. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us!
