For more information, please contact Nancy Pauly at $ 9, , Lent is upon us once again. We all know that this is the season for conversion and transformation. Often, as we begin Lent, we think, What am I going to give up? This is not a bad way to begin. To give up candy for Lent, or to make some other needed changes in our lives is important, but Jesus is not just about changes. He is about transformation which means change the form itself. Lent is not about will power, like I did my resolution, nor is it essentially about opening ourselves up to some good new idea which would merely engage us on our present level of consciousness. It is not about trying harder, or to think something more or better, or do something different. It is really about us becoming a different version of ourselves. It is a time to not stay where we feel comfortable, but it is a time to venture into a different space and experience a new self. Lent invites us to enter into a new creation. To enter it feels like dying and that is exactly what it is. We use this forty day retreat to die to our singularity; we die to our old, comfortable self; we die to our little space and comforts, and take the chance to be open to something new. When we try harder, when we give up something only, it emphasizes the old self. During Lent we should be surrendering and allowing our old self to die. We don t do it to ourselves; we let it be done to us. Such deep allowing is at times humiliating and is sacrificial. Pep talks seldom get us there, but the suffering of life and love does get us there. Lent is really, as one author writes, just magnified and intensified life. I experience this most in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This sacrament seems to be the place where a true encounter happens. Most don t like confession because it goes against our own selfimage. It forces us to look at our shallow side, our sin; it breaks up our bubble of order and asks us to walk in the opposite direction for a while, and examine or go against our former patterns. So the language of Lent is the language of darkness, not light. Its locale is the desert, not the garden. This is where Jesus went and where he took his disciples. He went to the desert to pray. He had no place to lay his head. He walked the roads with them, and gave specific instructions of how to travel. They were not to take much for the journey. Don t rely on your own nice securities He told them. This is good advice of how to be these next forty days. Nothing creative or transformative comes from business as usual. We all need to be a place long enough so that we can learn something essential. Lent says to all of us, Let s not play around with religion and spirituality. We need to make the journey ourselves. We all need a good, transformative Lent. Pope Francis has called for a "special day of prayer and fasting for peace in the world" on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, particularly for peace in the conflict-stricken nations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. He invited Catholics and other Christians as well as followers of other religions and people of good will to join in this event.! He made the surprise announcement on Sunday, Feb. 4, after praying and reciting the Angelus with thousands of pilgrims from many countries gathered in St. Peter s Square. In the face of the tragic continuation of conflicts in different parts of the world, I invite all the faithful to a special day of prayer and fasting for peace on February 23, the Friday of the first week of Lent, he said.! We will offer it especially for the populations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and of South Sudan, he added.! Together we make this following prayer of peace: O Lord Jesus Christ, Who said to Your Apostles: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you," regard not my sins but the faith of Your Church, and deign to give her peace and unity according to Your Will: Who live and reign, God, world without end. Amen. St. Edward, pray for us. Treu in Christus, faithfully in Christ, Fr. Rod

Repent and believe the Gospel! Prayer, fasting, almsgiving and the sacrament of Penance are the Church s traditional practices that are effective in helping people to repent and live the Gospel. Catholic Catechism Quote # 571 The Paschal mystery of Christ's cross and Resurrection stands at the center of the Good News that the apostles, and the Church following them, are to proclaim to the world. God's saving plan was accomplished "once for all" by the redemptive death of his Son Jesus Christ.
