I wanted to followup with some background information about Baldwin pianos. The following is a history of the Baldwin company: Baldwin pianos are a musical legacy that for over a century, continues to live on. Each piano that carries the name Baldwin, is a piece of that legacy which has contributed to American piano history and manufacturing. The company was founded by Dwight Hamilton Baldwin in Cincinnati, Ohio in Also known as D.H. Baldwin, the name has always been one of the most widely renowned names in the American piano industry and history. The company originally began as a retail enterprise, who sold Steinway and Chickering pianos. They began manufacturing their own pianos in 1889, as "D.H. Baldwin & Co." In 1903, shortly after the founder's death, the name became the Baldwin Piano & Organ Co. In 1904, the Baldwin piano was awarded the Grand Prize at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Mo., and another Grand Prize was also awarded to the Baldwin pianos and Manualos at the Anglo-American Exposition, London, The Baldwin piano is recognized as a universal favorite between the leading operatic artists and virtuosos of the pianoforte. The Baldwin Grand Piano, which was designed, manufactured and guaranteed by the Baldwin Company in Loveland, Ohio, is exclusively enjoyed by top tier of artists in all areas of musical expression ranging from pianists, composers, conductors, singers, and instrumentalists - as well as outstanding symphony orchestras all over the globe. Some notable artists include Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copeland, Liberace, Dave Brubeck and Bruce Hornsby. Baldwin ceased piano production at its only remaining U.S. factory in Trumann, Arkansas in December This facility remains open as a US distribution and service center. Without any doubt and dispute, from the nine-foot concert grand to the five feet, two inch baby grand, every Baldwin piano demonstrates the most modern ideas of acoustical science and piano making; its manufacture is precision engineered, which gives each instrument the highest degree of excellence. Any Baldwin made piano is worth the time, money and energy to rebuild or refurbish. So that is a little background. We are proud to have such a fine instrument here at St. Edward Church. I hope you enjoy the music! As mentioned in the blessing of the piano: The purpose of music in the liturgy is above all, to give glory to God and to lead us to holiness. Thus, music wonderfully expresses the new song that Scripture tells us to sing to the Lord. To sing this new song is to live rightly, to follow God s will eagerly and gladly, and, by loving one another, to carry out the new commandment that Jesus gave us. Music isn't just an important addition to the liturgy, added as an extension of praise and worship. For much of the Church s history, music has been an essential part of the liturgy itself. The inclusion goes back to the very earliest days of the Church to the Last Supper. We know that Christ and his disciples sang a hymn at the Last Supper. Singing quickly was mandated during many parts of early Church celebrations. Over the centuries, Catholic theology developed to explain why the union of sacred music and text was such an important element of worship that arose from these early traditions. The Catholic Church also continued to intertwine music and prayer into nearly every part of its liturgy. A few weeks ago, a visitor stopped after Sunday Mass to tell me that she has travelled the world and attended many different Catholic churches. She said that at St. Edward she felt the most welcomed. When I asked why she would say that, she responded, the singing, the responses she really felt at welcome here. I say, keep it up! St. Edward, pray for us. Treu in Christus, faithfully in Christ, Fr. David is a student at St. Edward School and will be entering into the Fifth Grade. David is currently undergoing intense chemotherapy. He will continue to receive chemotherapy for the next three years. The evening will include an All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti & Meatball Dinner, Basket Raffles, Silent Auction and Live Auction starting at 7 pm. The Alleluia Ball has raised more than $6 million since 2000 to support our Catholic schools and the families who seek a Catholic education for their children. Proceeds from the 2017 Alleluia Ball are intended for the Better Together initiative which will educate students with special learning needs at an initial group of 40-plus Catholic schools in the eight-county diocese. St. Edward School is one of the schools that will benefit from the proceeds.

The theme of this gathering is Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. In preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful.
