Being the pastor here these past six years has really opened my eyes as to the value of a solid Catholic education. The following are some reflections on what Catholic education offers our young minds that they miss in secular education systems. This is not to deny the hard work of teachers in the secular system, but they are limited by societal and governmental pressures that restrict what and how they teach. To provide Catholic education requires many sacrifices, but I want to offer these concrete goods that Catholic education uniquely provides concrete goods that make the difficulties and sacrifices more than worth it and that should inspire us to keep persevering in making Catholic education a priority. Catholic education instills in students the conviction that truth exists and is knowable. As Pope Benedict XVI so often remarked, our world today is ruled by a dictatorship of relativism. We live in a culture and a time that says there are no absolutes, just many options. This doctrine has caused many problems in the lives of many people: drug use, alcoholism, infidelity, pregnancy outside of marriage, addictions, etc. I am grateful, therefore, to be pastor of a Catholic school where we can teach our young students that truth exists (you may recall Jesus saying, I am the way and the truth, and the life in John s Gospel), that truth has a name Jesus Christ and that in seeking, knowing and living the truth they will find the freedom to become happy, holy, and wholly themselves. Catholic education teaches students their God-given dignity. Another concrete good that Catholic education uniquely provides is helping students to know they have great worth because they were deliberately created by Almighty God in his image and likeness. As a priest, I often talk with individuals who struggle with low self-esteem. And while these struggles can be serious at times and are often complex, I cannot help but think our culture would go a long way toward helping all people if we formed our children to know that they were lovingly created by an all-wise, all-good God, as opposed to their existence being explained solely as a result of a random, mindless, godless evolutionary process. (I am not criticizing all evolutionary theory, just that which is often taught and denies the God who directs it along with all of history.) I am grateful to God, therefore, to be a pastor with a Catholic school where we can teach our students their great dignity and how to honor and respect the dignity of others, from conception all the way into eternity. In other words, we can teach them that every single one of us matters so much so that Jesus Christ died for us. Catholic education forms students in moral virtue. All reasonable people know there are consequences in life. Sadly, many people today either do not realize this or want to deny this for ulterior motives. Nevertheless, a fact is a fact. One of the consequences of living in our world today a world that denies the existence of absolute truth and denies (at least in practice) the inherent dignity of every human person is that we no longer can agree upon what the good life looks like. And, thus, we live in a broken culture where violence, hatred, lying, cheating, etc., are all regular behaviors. This is yet another reason why I am grateful to be pastor of a Catholic school, a place where we can teach our students about the Beatitudes, about the Ten Commandments, and about the cardinal and theological virtues; where discussions about how to better practice generosity, honesty, faithfulness, respect, reverence, justice and love are regular behaviors. Catholic education offers all of us hope. Finally, Catholic education offers the Church and the world hope for the future and into eternity. It offers us hope that there will be a Church in future generations to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. It offers us hope that there will be an American citizenry in the future who knows how to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar s, but also to God the things that are God s. It offers us hope that there will be doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, business leaders, government leaders and working class people who are using their God-given talents to serve the King of Kings as well as their brothers and sisters. It offers us hope that God will continue to raise up young men and women to serve him as priests and religious. And, it offers us the hope that heaven will be much more crowded one day. Come and visit our school, see how the students are being formed as disciples of Jesus. Thank our staff for all they do to form the minds of our youngsters. Pray for all of them. 4 Happy New Year from Cub Scout Pack 502! Time just seems to go faster and faster. Seems like it was only yesterday that we prepared for our Council Encampment at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near the end of October. This was the first campout as a pack since I have been Cub Master. Council estimated over 1000 people participated in the event. With 36 in our group, we were one of the larger groups to attend. I am happy to say with all our planning and dedication of the leaders, parents and scouts, the event went off amazingly well. The weather wasn t the greatest-being cold and rainy to start and then just cold, but we survived. Special thanks to our Boy Scout Troop 502 for allowing us to use their trailer and to Mr. Sauber and Mr. Neel for making chili for our Saturday evening meal. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and there were lots of events to keep everyone busy. This encampment was bittersweet as it was the last encampment for The Heart of Ohio Council. As of January 1, 2017 the Heart of Ohio Council no longer exists. As we all know, things change. Some changes we like and others we don t, but one thing for sure is that we have to keep going and keep the faith that it will all work out in the end. At the stroke of midnight, when the ball dropped, the council lines were redrawn and reduced from 5 councils in Ohio to 3. We are now part of The Buckeye Council. We are just learning what this means to us and will surely be an interesting time ahead of us. It is up to us to make this a positive change and to remember we are doing it for the boys. Scouting is a very positive organization and will continue to be. February is a busy month with Scout Sunday, The Blue and Gold Banquet, and our Webelos II Group to cross over and become Boy Scouts. March will be our Pinewood Derby, which is always a highlight. Look for February updates soon. Brian L. 5 THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME If the Pope himself would give you a special invitation to visit him in the Vatican, this honor would be nothing in comparison to the honor and dignity that Jesus Himself bestows upon you with the invitation of spending one hour a week with Him in the Blessed Sacrament.
