The weather was beautiful and everyone enjoyed themselves. I hope everyone got to make at least one new friend this year. I want to thank the Parish Pastoral Council, coordinated by Mike Hupfer, for all their work to plan and take care of the details. Special thanks go to John and Nancy Hadam for allowing us to use their property again. And a big thank you to everyone for bringing all the tasty food! As the election season heats up, I know that many people are concerned about the candidates who are presenting themselves for our consideration both at the national level, and even on the state level. This year s election is shaping up to be the most divisive that we have ever seen. We, as faithful citizens, must vote not voting is not an option. How are we to choose, what can guide us to make a good decision? The following was written by a priest friend of mine to his parish. I wanted to present this to you as well. Admittedly he is a bit strong in his approach, but he not wrong in the message. This is something for you to think about as we will be deciding our nation s future. ~~~ There is much talk today about the fact that come November we will be faced with the choice of a venal, arrogant, immoral, sleazy Republican or a venal, arrogant, immoral, sleazy Democrat for President. There seems to be a fair bit of chest beating and questioning going on Where is the candidate who best expresses Catholic values? or We need a candidate who will stand up for marriage, sanctity of life and freedom of religion. The problem with this kind of talk is that people assume that somehow or other a Presidential candidate is going to solve problems and return America to Christian values. Since when is this the job of a politician? The reason America has elected Trump and Clinton is because the whole country has abandoned Christian values long ago. It s not the fault of politicians that marriage, sanctity of life and freedom of religion are being eroded. It s not their problem. It s our problem. Marriage is on the rocks because you and I and the people next door have been putting knives in marriage for the last fifty years. Marriage is in crisis because we turned a blind eye to divorce and remarriage in our own families. Marriage is on the rocks because we let it slide when the kids cohabited. Marriage is on the rocks because we accepted easy artificial contraception and sterilization. Marriage is on the rocks because we let it slide when we or our family members got involved with porn, committed adultery, filed for no fault divorce and when we said nothing when our nephew decided to marry his boyfriend. This is not the fault of politicians. It is our fault. Sanctity of life? It s not the fault of politicians. It s our fault because we accepted artificial contraception. We were silent when a family member had an abortion, or we quietly paid for an abortion when our kids got pregnant. Sanctity of life? It s our fault because we collaborated with those who were making war, abusing the poor, profiting from sweatshops in the developing world, and we accepted it when creeping euthanasia started to come into the medical profession. Sanctity of life? We re the ones who pollute the world, destroy the environment in the developing world for profit so we can enjoy our cheap luxury stuff. Freedom of religion? Freedom of religion is only a live concept for people who are truly religious, but we don t give two hoots about freedom of religion if that means the freedom to practice our religion with a radical and cutting edge. Instead we think freedom of religion means we must be left alone to practice that American anti religion of Moralistic, Therapeutic Deism. That s not even a religion. It s a set of table manners. So let s not blame the politicians for the state of our country. Let s blame ourselves. Lest I play too much the Jeremiah, what is the positive answer? The positive answer is to live joyfully radiant lives of radical discipleship. The answer is to listen again to the call of Christ and to strive for the purity of heart and passion of will that sets apart the true disciple. Let us not complain about the state of our nation unless we are willing to do something about the state of our soul, the state of our family, the state of our parish, the state of our church. St. Edward School Update The students and faculty of St. Edward School celebrated the canonization of Mother Teresa this month. Each class spent time learning about the life of this beloved saint.

Kindergarten made hand print thank you signs, a thank you letter, and snacks for the Ashland Police Department. First grade is holding a gently used toy drive for the month of September.

Third grade made placemats for the hunger center and prayed for the hungry and the homeless. Fourth grade is collecting pennies for the poor and donating the money to the Salvation Army.

(The sheriff s department has been instrumental in our safety trainings.) Sixth grade made dog pulls out of old T-shirts for the Ashland County Animal Shelter. They also donated blankets.

They made a thank you sign and delivered the cupcakes, coffee, and the sign to the Ashland Fire Department.

Edward Church. Not only did the students engage in a service project in honor of Mother Teresa, but they shared the news of her canonization to the Ashland Community.

3 St. Edward School Update The students and faculty of St. Edward School celebrated the canonization of Mother Teresa this month. Each class spent time learning about the life of this beloved saint. After studying about Mother Theresa, all classes picked a service project to do in honor of this woman who served others so well. The toys they donate and collect will be given to Ronald McDonald House. Second grade is holding a food drive. The food they donate and collect will be given to the Ashland County Food Pantry. Fifth grade sent our Sheriff s department a high five for working so hard to keep our school safe. They made painted handprints with a message of gratitude and blessings. They sent a beautiful letter of thanks explaining the significance to Mother Teresa s canonization. Seventh grade baked and decorated cupcakes. They also explained to the firemen that they were doing this to honor Mother Teresa s canonization. Eighth grade will be making blankets to give as a gift from the school to each baby baptized at St. Edward Church. Not only did the students engage in a service project in honor of Mother Teresa, but they shared the news of her canonization to the Ashland Community. We are so proud of the work they did on these projects. As a part of our celebration all the students received a cookie at lunch on September 5 th. The cookies were decorated with white frosting and blue crosses, the colors Mother Teresa always wore. Thank you to Mrs. Benedetti and her family for baking and decoration all those cookies. In addition, Father Rod talked about Mother Teresa and how we can work to give of ourselves and serve others. St. Edward Cub Scouts Popcorn Sale: September 24 & 25 Cub Scout Pack 502 is blessed to be supported by our Parish. Popcorn sales and our spring bake sale are our major fundraisers allowing us to continue to mentor these boys into fine young men. Our Pack has no camping supplies and is hoping to raise enough money to start investing in camping gear. Over the past year most of our boys have gone on overnight campouts and are begging to do more of these activities. After all Masses on September we will be selling popcorn. Again this year there is a $25 military donation where $25 worth of popcorn is sent to our military personnel. Also new this year are two kinds of Mauve Popcorn which has virtually no hulls. Cash or checks made out to Saint Edward Pack 502 will gladly be accepted. Thank you in advance of your support of our Scouts! For the past several weeks our funds have been depleted and we were not able to help all those who requested assistance. We ask for your on-going monetary support which will enable us to help God s people in need. An envelope for St. Vincent de Paul is included in your monthly offering envelope packet, however, you may contribute anytime.
