ANOINTING OF THE SICK A communal celebration is held twice yearly. In case of serious illness, impending surgery or advanced age, please contact the parish office or Fr. Johnson. The sacrament should not be delayed until the person is unconscious or in imminent danger of death. FUNERALS Contact Fr. 2 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ, This Sunday Pope Francis canonized 6 blessed, Pope Paul VI, Archbishop Oscar Romero-martyr for the faith, Francesco Spinelli-diocesan priest, Vincenzo Romano-diocesan priest, Maria Katharina Kasper, virgin-founder of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, and Nazaria Ignacia de Santa Teresa de Jesús- founder of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church. Most prominent among them are Pope Paul VI who brought Vatican II to completion and Archbishop Romero who was assassinated while celebrating Mass, martyred for the faith. May they all intercede for us and help us to live the faith. Saint Oscar Romero is associated with this prayer which was first given buy Cardinal Dearden of Detroit. It expresses his philosophy of ministry but more importantly reminds us our need to rely on God every step of way in passing on the Gospel: It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church's mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord's grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. Johnson will be meeting with the parents of children preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thursday evening, October 25th at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall. Please plan to attend. Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Church Mary, Mother of the Church, we stand before you shaken by the scandal and division in the Church that we love. We pray for victims of abuse, whose trust was betrayed and whose innocence was shattered by members of the clergy. We pray for those whose suffering was ignored or disbelieved. We pray for Church leaders, that they may regain the trust that has been broken, by putting the needs of the vulnerable first, by acting with transparency, and by always holding themselves accountable to God and to the People of God. We pray for ourselves, that the darkness and confusion we feel may give way to light. Soothe our hearts and renew our trust. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us, And show us the way to justice, healing, and hope. Amen -3-

4 SOCIAL JUSTICE EVERLASTING LIFE The rich man wants to have it both ways: he wants his possessions and he wants everlasting life. Jesus shatters his illusion; you can t have both, Jesus says. The rich man goes away sad, prompting Jesus to comment on the difficulty of being rich and entering the kingdom. There is more to this story than renunciation of material possessions, for Jesus does not tell the man simply to get rid of his possessions: he must sell them and give to the poor. The point of the command is the acknowledgment of the priority of people and their needs over the satisfaction provided by the ownership of things. This is God s word (that) is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, and this is the spirit of Wisdom of which the first reading speaks: we are to value each other as if we were prime possessions, and the promise of everlasting life is made to those who have the power to give all they have to their brothers and sisters, especially those most in need. CANONIZATION Pope Paul VI & Blessed Oscar Romero October 14, 2018 A Church that does not join the poor in order to speak out from the side of the poor against the injustices committed against them is not the true Church of Jesus Christ. Blessed Oscar Romero We ask that like Blessed Oscar Romero we will not be afraid to risk all that we have to follow you, to stand with the poor and oppressed. May you grant us the courage you gave Blessed Oscar Romero: That we will feel what we are afraid to feel That we will not be overwhelmed by all that needs to be done but that we will follow you, And trust that you will walk with us on our journey of discipleship, wherever it may lead. NICKEL AND DIMED On (Not) Getting By In America The Social Justice Committee invites you to join them in a conversation based upon the book Nickel and Dimed. Through our conversations with one another, hopefully, we may have a better understanding of the lives of many of the residents in safe parking who are low-wage earners. Please join us on Monday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in Lovett Hall. Jesus reminds us of the words we will one day hear from him--- I was hungry and you gave me to eat if we feed the least of these. -4- May our walk be one of true solidarity As Archbishop Romero s was. And in life and death may we bear much fruit. Pope Paul VI In America, you are not required to offer food to the hungry or shelter the homeless. There is no ordinance forcing you to visit the lonely, or comfort the infirmed. No where in the Constitution does it say you have to provide clothing to the poor. In fact, one of the nicest things about living here in America, is that you really don't have to do anything for anybody. But when you do, you give meaning and provide soul to the concept of community...and develop a sense of purpose to something greater than one's self. Pope Paul VI

5 PARISH EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES SCRIPTURE STUDY GROUP The Scripture Study Group meets on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 am. The group reflects on the Sunday Readings and explores ways to integrate them into our daily lives. You are welcome to come to all or as many gatherings as you can. ADULT CONFIRMATION Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation (along with Baptism & Eucharist) in which the baptized person is sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ. We will be offering sessions for adults who desire the sacrament of Confirmation. These sessions are for adults who have been baptized Catholic and who have already received First Eucharist, but have yet to be confirmed. Preparation sessions will begin on October 21st at 10:15 am. 7 Around the Archdiocese How can I give to the Called to Serve as Christ campaign? Selecting the best gift plan depends on one's personal financial situation and goals. Gifts made by cash, check, credit card or Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFT) are the most common ways and will allow us to respond to the needs most quickly. Checks should be made payable to the Called to Serve as Christ campaign. Gift intentions are made in good faith and are not legally binding. Archbishop Sartain is encouraging all donors to consider stretching your gift over a three-year period to maximize the total amount of your support. Your commitment can be fulfilled through monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual installments. If you wish, you can give to the campaign gifts of stock, real estate, life insurance and other planned gift opportunities. As tax laws are always changing and everyone s situation is unique, donors are encouraged to consult with financial advisors to determine which method of contributing is most beneficial to them. A lead presenter from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) shares an informative presentation and a young adult livening with a mental health condition shares their journey of recover. Question and answers follow and audience members gain understanding of an oftenmisunderstood topic. Ending the Silence for Families is a presentation for parents and primary caregivers. It includes warning signs, facts, and statistics, how to talk to your child and best ways to work with school staff.
