ANOINTING OF THE SICK A communal celebration is held twice yearly. In case of serious illness, impending surgery or advanced age, please contact the parish office or Fr. Johnson. 2 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Last week, we celebrated the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila, the great doctor of prayer of prayer for the Church. She teaches us how to nourish our relationship with the Lord through our prayer. She writes: "If Christ Jesus dwells in a person as his friend and noble leader, that person can endure all things, for Christ helps and strengthens us and never abandons us. He is a true friend. And I clearly see that if we expect to please him and receive an abundance of his graces, God desires that these graces must come to us from the hands of Christ, through his most sacred humanity, in which God takes delight All blessings come to us through our Lord. He will teach us, for in beholding his life we find that he is the best example. What more do we desire from such a good friend at our side? Unlike our friends in the world, he will never abandon us when we are troubled or distressed. Blessed is the one who truly loves him and always keeps him near. Let us consider the glorious Saint Paul: it seems that no other name fell from his lips than that of Jesus, because the name of Jesus was fixed and embedded in his heart. Once I had come to understand this truth, I carefully considered the lives of some of the saints, the great contemplatives, and found that they took no other path: Francis, Anthony of Padua, Bernard, Catherine of Siena. A person must walk along this path in freedom, placing himself in God s hands. If God should desire to raise us to the position of one who is an intimate and shares his secrets, we ought to accept this gladly. Whenever we think of Christ we should recall the love that led him to bestow on us so many graces and favours, and also the great love God showed in giving us in Christ a pledge of his love; for love calls for love in return. Let us strive to keep this always before our eyes and to rouse ourselves to love him. ST TERESA OF AVILA May St. Teresa s intercession help us to always seek out Christ in prayer and help us to converse with Him as our friend, teacher, and Lord. Blessings on your your week! 4 SOCIAL JUSTICE SERVANT LEADERS The scriptures offer a radical critique of the values that seem to dominate our world. Our culture seems to idealize those who are the greatest those who have power over others, or political control, or the most wealth and influence, or the highest rating in the polls. Jesus instead invites the disciples into lives of service not power into lives of sacrifice not domination -- into community and the common good and not just one s own personal well-being. The gospel reminds us that real glory (honor) is meant to mature so that eventually we will begin, more and more, to envision ourselves as standing out because of the depth of our compassion and the quality of our forgiveness. The scriptures also remind us that God wants to be connected with our humanness and weakness. God shares our suffering and our struggle for what is right and just in the world. The God whom we find in Jesus is a God who is the servant of all. NICKEL AND DIMED On (Not) Getting By In America The Social Justice Committee invites you to join them in a conversation based upon the book Nickel and Dimed. Through our conversations with one another, hopefully, we may have a better understanding of the lives of many of the residents in safe parking who are low-wage earners. Please join us on Monday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in Lovett Hall. HOUSING FACTS Between 750,000-1,000,000 children are homeless in America over the course of a year 25% of the homeless population. We pray that our vote helps the least of these To have a real place at the table When policies and priorities are set. We pray for wisdom and discernment So we may help find a place at the table For all God s children. Amen. EVERY LIFE: CHERISHED CHOSEN SENT Respect Life Month CARING FOR LOVED ONES AT LIFE S END An old Irish proverb says, It is in the shelter of each other that the people live. Indeed, we are created to depend upon one another and walk together in suffering. Some concrete ways to compassionately care for them. Listen: Try to discover your loved one s values and how best to honor his/her wishes. Be Steadfast in Compassion: Surround him/ her with love, support and companionship that are anchored in unconditional respect for their human dignity. Reminisce: Think of ways you can spark meaningful memories, like special photos.

5 PARISH EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES SCRIPTURE STUDY GROUP The Scripture Study Group meets on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 am. The group reflects on the Sunday Readings and explores ways to integrate them into our daily lives. You are welcome to come to all or as many gatherings as you can. PRAYER WARRIOR NETWORK We know that God is listening to our prayers and they bring healing and peace. The St. Jude Prayer Network is available to pray for your family and friends. Brothers in Christ Men s Group We meet in Lovett Hall every Friday from 6:15-7:30 AM for coffee, snack, camaraderie and spiritual enlightenment. Matthew 25: 40 BLANKETS FOR EVERGREEN HOSPICE Once again we are requesting a donation of handmade blankets. These blankets can be knitted, crocheted, quilted or made of fleece. They can be a throw size up to a twin bed size. You can place your donated blankets in the large blue bin located in the Ministry Sacristy, which is in the long narrow room located just behind the library in the Narthex. 7 Around the Archdiocese How can I give to the Called to Serve as Christ campaign? Selecting the best gift plan depends on one's personal financial situation and goals. Gifts made by cash, check, credit card or Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFT) are the most common ways and will allow us to respond to the needs most quickly. Checks should be made payable to the Called to Serve as Christ campaign. Gift intentions are made in good faith and are not legally binding. Archbishop Sartain is encouraging all donors to consider stretching your gift over a three-year period to maximize the total amount of your support. Your commitment can be fulfilled through monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual installments. If you wish, you can give to the campaign gifts of stock, real estate, life insurance and other planned gift opportunities. As tax laws are always changing and everyone s situation is unique, donors are encouraged to consult with financial advisors to determine which method of contributing is most beneficial to them. PARISH STEWARDSHIP Bookkeeper Position Opening at St. Louise School A part-time bookkeeper position is available at St. Louise Parish School in Bellevue. This position enjoys a flexible schedule, allowing the bookkeeper to work three full days a week or four to five shorter days per week, for a total of 25 hours weekly. The bookkeeper s work schedule mostly follows the school calendar, with limited hours during school vacations. The candidate chosen for this position will be trained by the outgoing bookkeeper and must be available to begin training by no later than December 1, 2018, with the ability to completely take over the position by no later than February 1, (Earlier training and start dates are possible.) A compensation range of $25 to $35 an hour will be based on experience. This position does not offer health benefits. If you haven t been to the day center, we encourage you to come visit! We are always in need of volunteers and people to bring meals in the evening. If you are interested in helping, please volunteer@nbpshelter.org. We are also pleased to announce that the campaign to build a permanent, 24/7 shelter for homeless families is very close to being fully funded!
