2 From the Desk of the Pastor The Solemnity of All Saints This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints, remembering all those countless Christian faithful named and unnamed who enjoy the victory of heaven. Pope Benedict spoke beautifully of this great multitude and their meaning to us. They have blazed the trail for us. They intercede for us. Their victory over sin and death urges us on and give us hope and joy. "Our Eucharistic celebration began with the exhortation: "Let us all rejoice in the Lord". The liturgy invites us to share in the heavenly jubilation of the Saints, to taste their joy. The Saints are not a small caste of chosen souls but an innumerable crowd to which the liturgy urges us to raise our eyes. This multitude not only includes the officially recognized Saints, but the baptized of every epoch and nation who sought to carry out the divine will faithfully and lovingly. We are unacquainted with the faces and even the names of many of them, but with the eyes of faith we see them shine in God's firmament like glorious stars..this, then, is the meaning of today's Solemnity: looking at the shining example of the Saints to reawaken within us the great longing to be like them; happy to live near God, in his light, in the great family of God's friends. Being a Saint means living close to God, to live in his family. And this is the vocation of us all, vigorously reaffirmed by the Second Vatican Council and solemnly proposed today for our attention. But how can we become holy, friends of God? We can first give a negative answer to this question: to be a Saint requires neither extraordinary actions or works nor the possession of exceptional charisms. Then comes the positive reply: it is necessary first of all to listen to Jesus and then to follow him without losing heart when faced by difficulties. "If anyone serves me", he warns us, "he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honour him" (Jn 12: 26). Like the grain of wheat buried in the earth, those who trust him and love him sincerely accept dying to themselves. Indeed, he knows that whoever seeks to keep his life for himself loses it, and whoever gives himself, loses himself, and in this very way finds life (cf. Jn 12: 24-25)." All Souls Day On Monday we observe All Souls Day, a special day of prayer for all the faithful departed. We remember all our beloved dead, and we help them by our love and prayers. In the book of Maccabees we are reminded that is is a good and holy thing to pray for the dead We remember all those holy souls who have died in grace and but our still in a process of purification and enlightenment before their entrance into heaven. At St. Jude there will be a special Mass at 7pm in the evening to remember all those who have died this past year and all of our loved ones who have gone to their rest. Please join us. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Fr. Johnson ALL SOUL S DAY The All Soul s Mass will be Monday, November 2nd, at 7:00 pm. During this mass we remember all those who have died during the past year. This coming week as we focus on Parish Stewardship, please reflect on how we are called to continue to sustain and build up our parish church by returning to the Lord from all the Lord has given us. -2-

4 LIVING THE BEATITUDES The values of Jesus the values of the saints -- contrast markedly with the values that we see play out in parts of our contemporary culture where greed, prestige, power, security, wealth, status and the like are often assumed to be signs of success and happiness. The gospel message is clearly counter-cultural. The world sets up the rich in first place; Jesus put the poor on top of the world. The world tells us to seek happiness at all cost; Jesus saw happiness in mourning. The world values power over others; Jesus praised the meek. The world encourages self-fulfillment; Jesus told us to work for justice. The world says that the merciless succeed; Jesus proclaimed blessed the merciful. The world announces: Go for the gold! Jesus taught us to keep our hearts pure. The world honors the winners of wars; Jesus celebrated peacemakers. Christians who take an active part in modern socioeconomic development and defend justice and charity can make a great contribution to the prosperity of humankind and the peace of the world. They should in faithfulness to Christ and His gospel observe the right order of values in their earthly activities. Thus their whole lives, both individual and social, will be permeated with the spirit of the beatitudes, notably with the spirit of poverty. CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME LAUDATO SI: Explore, study, and reflect upon the document Laudato Si by Pope Francis. Please join us anytime. We serve coffee and a light breakfast. Meals for Winter Shelters Needed! Two emergency shelters are opened on the Eastside one for Men and one for Women and Families. These shelters are bare bones with mats on the floor and a blanket or two for each guest. They open at 8:30 pm and the guests must leave by 7:00 am. Last year the Men s shelter had as many as 75 guests. The Women/Families shelter had up to 60 with at least 10 children every night. You can help the folks staying in these shelters by providing a meal for them. This usually consists of a hot main course, a salad and/or fruit, and milk and/or juice. Breakfast items such as cereal or yogurt, or something they can take with them, like granola bars, are also appreciated. This is a wonderful project for families, neighbors, or friends to do together. You can simply drop off the food or stay and serve. Either way, you will be sharing the gift of God s love to our neighbors in great need.
