From the Pastor After a lot of planning, hard work and generosity the day is finally here. On Sunday, we will officially step into our new playground and outdoor gathering space. We will worship in the sanctuary at 9:30 (childcare will be available during worship). Following worship there will be a picnic lunch. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share, friends, and a joyous spirit. Trinity Episcopal Church PLACE STAMP HERE 1118 Preston Avenue Charlottesville, VA Trinity will provide the meat and drinks. Tables and chairs will be set up under a tent but if you want to bring a comfortable lawn chair, feel free to do so. There will be a Bonce House and snow cone station as well. 4 (Continued from page 1) I have spoken with several non-trinity members in the community who plan to attend. They are aware of the celebration either through the postcards we mailed out, passing the construction that has been going on for three months, or word of moth. That means we will have a number of guests. Please let s all make them feel welcome. Even though Sunday will be our first occasion enjoying our new spaces, I want to highlight Sunday, September 24 which will be the official dedication of the playground. On that date. we will have a short joint service with members of both congregations at about 1:00 where we will specifically remember The Reverends Henry Mitchell (Trinity) and Ted Evans (St. Paul s Memorial) for whom the playground is dedicate to. (Continued from page 6) and our chance to deepen our own transformation, to stand for ourselves and for our families. Many things have lead me to be believe that a proper response calling for my leadership is to fold one thousand paper cranes, which is traditionally believed to bring a wish to the folders and is a symbol of longevity and hope. I invite you into this spiritual practice through the legacy of my family-- a legacy I am proud of and that I wish to honor. We will fold the cranes and on the inside of each one, we will write a commitment to dismantling white supremacy in ourselves, in our community, in our family's history. These cranes will be made into a mobile art piece that will be present at these hateful gatherings, soaring above their bigotry and reminding us of the power the lies within us and with our ancestral heritage. Dear friends, My family survived Japanese concentration camps and the bombing in Hiroshima. You better believe my ancestors are burning within me and calling me to action this summer. As the tide rises in Charlottesville with a number of gatherings centered around white supremacy, many of us are wondering what to do. The KKK is coming, and perhaps equally, if not more frightening, is that Richard Spenser and other infamous, movement-building white nationalists are hosting what looks to be a huge gathering, sanctioned by the city, in August. This is our chance to stand on the right side of history I hope to host several folding events throughout the summer, but the first will be on June 24 from 10 am until 4 pm at 960 Monacan Trail Rd., Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, drop in whenever. I will have lots of paper and lots of patience to instruct. We'll have food and music. You can stay and fold or take paper with you to do later (I included a shorter blurb below that you can copy and paste! Also, feel free to use this image!).
