1 The Messenger Of Peace 2018 From the Pastor: Theology of Glory or a Theology of the Cross I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. That s the talk of a man who once had been turned off by the cross of Christ and persecuted those who followed that cross. Paul, was later turned around by that same cross when he realized that Jesus died for his sins. Jesus Christ died for sin not His but ours. That s the glory of the cross of Jesus Christ, but it is also the reason some are turned off by His cross. They turn away from it for they cannot and will not see themselves on that cross. Some people think life is supposed to be one glorious picnic and that anything else is not really life. I have even heard religious people giving themselves credit for being prosperous because they followed God. The secret of the cross of Jesus Christ is that life is not a matter of things. Things you can take or leave. Faith means going Christ s way, which is the way of the cross. From the President: Garry Laaker Welcome to the March Peace Newsletter. We have a voters meeting scheduled this month on March 11 th, following the church service. Everyone 18 or over is welcome to attend and join. The Lenten season will soon be complete and we will celebrate Holy Week starting March 25. Please come and worship with us for our special services during the Lenten and Easter seasons. See your newsletter and bulletin for the schedule of these services and other activities. Please continue to keep Peace and our members in your prayers! It isn t enough that you have to see God in the cross of Jesus Christ you have to see God in your own crosses. That turns people off. They are perfectly content to see God in their prosperity, but they don t want to see God in their adversity. They don t want to see adversity at all. Life is a thing of the Spirit, with joy running over in both good times and bad. It is knowing God, trusting God, following God, and hoping in God, just letting God lead and following His leading. That s the secret of real life. Lord God, help us to see You in the good and bad parts of our lives. Make Yourself known to us in our suffering and prosperity for the sake of Jesus. Amen. 5 MISSION FESTIVAL with Rev. Brent Smith April 28 & 29 What Do Missionaries Do? The main priority of a missionary is to bring the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard the Good News. LCMS missionaries usually share that Good News in the language of the people they serve. When the Holy Spirit begins to gather people into Christian fellowship, missionaries assist these new Christians in forming their own indigenous church leaders. Today, The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod trains, sends and supports called and appointed career, long-term and short-term missionaries in approximately 90 countries, including the United States where there are mission stations, partner churches, schools or mission relationships. COME AN JOIN US for real stories about our mission work and how you can help spread the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. Saturday April 28 4:00 5:30 Session 1 5:30-6:30 Dinner provided by Peace Lutheran Thrivent Action Team 6:30 7:30 Session 2 Sunday April 29 9:15 Bible Class stories/study 10:30 Worship message Community Relations: Dave Ringshauser Our first outreach project of the new year was a Valentines gift for each of the Preschool children. This consisted of a Valentine Scripture verse bag containing cherry flavored gummy hearts. These were passed out at the Preschool Valentines parties on February 9, 13, and 14. The annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 31 (the day before Easter Sunday), at 1:00 pm for children ages Can you help? We will be in need of donated refreshments such as cookies, milk, and apple juice for the children, parents, etc. for after the hunt. Refreshments may be brought in on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, or on Saturday morning before the egg hunt. Volunteers are also needed to help with set up of tables and chairs and hiding of eggs before the hunt, directing traffic in the parking areas, leading and helping children during the hunt, greeting visitors, and serving refreshments to the parents and children after the hunt. Let me know if you can help. Remember our Care and Share program. Canned goods and non-perishables may be brought in on any Sunday of the month to help support our local food banks.
6 Stewardship: Pat Laaker Hudson Taylor, a Nineteenth Century British missionary to China, is reported to have said, God s work, done in God s way, will not lack God s supply. To know God s way, we need to know His Holy Word. Or to say it another way: you need to know your Bible. St. Paul, before he spends two chapters on giving, wrote that every thought is to be taken captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). Doctrine matters. And doctrine matters because the Scriptures matter. And the Scriptures matter because this is where we learn the teaching of Christ. Our thoughts must be brought into line with the teaching of Scripture so that our work is what God wants done and so that we do this work in His way. A good tree bears good fruit. A bad tree bears bad fruit. We have been made good trees in holy baptism. We are fertilized and pruned for bearing good fruit by constantly hearing God s Word preached and taught in sermon and Bible Class and in receiving the life-giving, faith-sustaining food of the Lord s Supper. Remember your doctrine, hold on to the Lord s teaching, and your thoughts will be taken captive to the obedience of Christ. Bringing every thought captive to the obedience of Christ is recognizing that God does provide. The Lord s Prayer teaches us to pray for daily bread. Praying this day in and day out reminds us that the Lord is the giver of our daily bread, and that we are to gives thanks for His daily provision of it. God is rarely early and never late in His work, as Abraham learned, on the mount of the Lord it will be provided (Gen. 22:14). The Lord s generosity forms our generosity in return. Thus, we set aside for the work of God a generous, first-fruits, proportion of the daily bread that God has given to us. This act of trust in the Lord s provision is the working out of our faith in Him. When budgetary discussions pop up, our natural reaction is to point fingers. But remember your doctrine, and what your mother taught about pointing fingers. Our first natural reaction is not always right. In fact, when our thoughts are brought into captivity of Christ, our first reaction should be repentance. It should raise questions in our own lives. As good trees in Christ who are to bear good fruit, we should ask whether our thoughts are taken captive by obedience to Christ. Have we given generously? Have we given our first-fruits? You know. And God knows. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him (2 Chron. 16:9). God will provide. He always has and He always will. He gives His meat in due season. He has not left you as orphans, but has grafted you into His own family. You belong to Him. Remember this, letting this thought dwell in you richly. And you will then be rich toward others. Bridging the Gap - Servant Event Time: 9:00 AM - includes breakfast Where: Christ Lutheran 3301 Compton Rd What: Ladies will sort and pack collected items for transportation to Prince of Peace Church. Needed items: blankets, coats, socks, hats, gloves, paper towels, Lysol or Pine Sol, vinegar, bleach, hand sanitizer, hand wipes
7 Elders: Chuck Ausman In January, Pastor stepped down from the pulpit and asked the congregation to list the good things that were going on at Peace Lutheran Church. I believe Mary was the scribe for the moment and in a short order the board was filled with events and activities carried out by members of Peace Lutheran. It was a broad list, covering all areas of our church life. Watching the list grow, I was struck by the fact that a great deal of our members had participated in one or more of the events. Even more, I thought, this is just things we do. I didn t get the sense that people were boasting or fluffing up their plumage as the list grew. It was, just things we do. Not to take away from the great work and effort by everyone, it still seemed like, just things we do. Each event probably had a leader, but it wasn t about the leader. In fact, I didn t even think about the leaders as much as the event. That s not to take away from the role as the leader. The leader wasn t the focus. It s, just things we do. This is good. 1 Corinthians 9:22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. Paul writes about working to win souls. He was able to adjust to the circumstances and conditions in which he found himself. With the end goal by all possible means to proclaim the Gospel of salvation. Reaching out to people in common circumstances and being humble in spirit doesn t come from us as humans. We ve been blessed by the Holy Spirit and we do our best, to live as Christ provides us with the example not that we need to imitate the example for our salvation, but that we reflect the love of Christ. Being saved and won by Christ s blood takes a whole lot of pressure off us as humans. The heavy lifting has been done, not through our effort, but Christ s sacrifice. This frees us to serve as just things we do. We ve been changed, each of us, for which we owe a lot, paid not a penny as we walk in newness of life through Christ our Savior. It s just things we do, because things were done for us. People notice. Work Up North: It has taken a year of thought, planning and prayer to make our ESL outreach a reality. The Lord sent us the right teacher, a Lutheran from Indonesia seeking asylum. Then He raised up the volunteers, and provided the funding. I was excited and terrified at the same time to meet the 12 people from all over the world who came to our first class: then was surprised that almost all of them spoke Spanish! The Lord works all things well, doesn t He! In addition to our ESL outreach, I ve also been working slowly at an internet outreach to Montreal, making use of free Google Ad dollars and the resources of a group called CV Outreach. I now have s from the city who me asking questions about the faith. Work Down South: As I write this newsletter I am near the end of a two and a half week immersion course in Spanish. I m staying in an apartment not far from our regional office, where I ve been taking one on one Spanish instruction almost every day for four hours. This will, Lord willing, jump y abilities in Spanish a little further ahead. To read their entire newsletter you may view it at:
