T hank you for worshipping with us this morning. We extend a special welcome to our guests and ask that you complete a blue or yellow visitor s card and place it in the offering plate. I n the pew racks, are folders with information about the various aspects of the service. If you are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near you and ask them questions about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about the time of offering. This is a time in our service when we respond to God s gifts of love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us, this is when we make a financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also use this time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing God s love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We are just glad you are worshipping with us. A W T ll are invited to come down to the Social Room for refreshments and conversations following the service. e ask that you please silence your cell phones during our worship service. here is much information about the church in this bulletin. For more information on our history, programs, and recent photos, you can go to our website: Donate online by scanning this code: T hank you.
EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH United Church of Christ - An Open and Affirming Congregation 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 5, 2015 The numbered hymns are from the Black Hymnal All who are able may stand. Chimes Concert at 10:00 a.m. from Trinity Chapel s steeple Greetings and Announcements Prelude Call to Worship Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: The prophets of old spoke of God s justice, even when it was unwelcome. Who will hear their message? We will listen and we will hear! Responding to God s call, Jesus traveled, preaching and teaching all who would listen. Who will hear his message? We will listen and we will hear! Christ sent out disciples two by two, to spread the good news in any place that would welcome them. Who will hear their message? We will listen and we will hear! God s prophets are among us still, around the world and in these pews. Who will hear their message? We will listen and we will hear! 10:30 a.m.
Opening Prayer (in unison) God of grace, we hear your call but we are not always at our best, at our most accepting and open-minded when we come to worship. Often we rush in, bursting with the circumstances of our lives, and so preoccupied with other things. Here and now we stop, we breathe out, we let go of distracting noise, and we settle into your company. Amen. Opening Hymn O Holy God, Whose Gracious Power - No. 535 Call to Confession Prayer of Confession (in unison) Merciful God, we know that you love us and that you call us to fullness of life, but around us and within us we see the brokenness of the world and of our ways. Our successes leave us empty; our progress does not satisfy. Our prosperous land is not the promised land of our longing. Forgive our willful neglect of your word, our insensitivity to the needs of others, and our failure to feed the spirit that is within us; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Thought for the Day The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Teachers and children ages 4 through 2nd grades may be dismissed for Children s Church, in Parish House Conference Room, during the singing of the hymn.)
Hymn Teach Me, O Lord, Your Holy Way - No. 465 Scripture for the Day Mark 6: 1-13 NT page 40 Sermon Pastoral Prayer Prayer Response Hear Our Prayer, O God - No. 769 Hear our prayer, O God, hear our prayer, O God; Incline your ear to us, and grant us your peace. Offering of Tithes, Gifts and Lives to Christ s Service Having heard God s call to generosity, let us listen and respond with open hearts. Offertory Presentation of Gifts Offertory Response Doxology - No. 778 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God for all that love has done; Creator, Christ, and Spirit, One. Prayer of Dedication (in unison) Outspoken Prophet, hear the message we are speaking through these our gifts and aid us in spreading that message of hope and love to those whose voices have been silenced. May they strengthen our congregation so that we may continue to listen to those in need.
SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION (All who desire the Sacrament, including children, are invited to come forward at the direction of the deacons. You may kneel or stand to receive the elements. Consume the bread and drink from the cup as it is given to you, and hand your empty cup to one of the ushers, as you return to your seat by way of the side aisles. Please use the quiet time before and after you commune for private prayers, for your own needs and for the needs of others.) Invitation Come, household of God: Alien and well-known, stranger and familiar. Know that God has called you to this place and said all are welcome. We are all a part of this community; let us all share in this sacrament together. Prayer One God, holy and good, we have been united with you through the life and ministry, death and resurrection, of Jesus the Christ. We come from different places and bring our different ideas and stories to this place. You welcome us, and proclaim to the world that we all are connected, that we all belong. now, may we who are united by your Spirit experience your presence in a bold and new way. At his last meal with his friends Jesus called them and us to remember, and so we do that now. We remember: how Jesus took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and shared it among them. One loaf, broken for all.
Later Jesus took a cup, and again gave you thanks, and shared that with them. One cup, shared for all. These are my body and blood, he said. Whenever you share in this meal remember me. One God, remembered by all. Bless us who have gathered here out of love for you, and strengthen us by these gifts to serve you in the world and share your love with everyone we meet. Sharing of the Bread and Cup Prayer of Thanksgiving Closing Hymn O Beautiful for Spacious Skies MATERNA O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! O beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern, impassioned stress A thoroughfare for freedom beat Across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self control. Thy liberty in law! O beautiful for heroes, proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine! O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown they good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! Amen.
Benediction Go out now with eyes and ears open, to hear and be heard as you share the good news with one another. Threefold Amen - No. 812 Postlude Today s liturgy was written by the Rev. Dr. Laurel Koepf Taylor, Assistant Professor of Old Testament at Eden Theological Seminary, Saint Louis, Missouri. The Prayer of Confession is from the UCC Book of Worship. ERUCC participants at General Synod Cleveland, Ohio June 26-30

THE SUMMER. This year we will travel back through time in our very own time machine. We will visit the totally tubular 1980 s, the roaring 20s, the Wild West and the Garden of Gethsemane! Rehearsals are from 9:30-10:15 am in the High School Sunday School Classroom on the second floor of Trinity Chapel. We will rehearse Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:15 am with the show in October. There is a part for everyone from singing in the chorus, to large speaking parts or helping behind the scenes with sets and sound. PIE SUNDAY We invite you to celebrate an All American Coffee Fellowship time by enjoying the pies furnished by church members. THIS WEEK MID-WEEK SUMMER WORSHIP: Wednesday July 8, 6-7:30p.m. We ll start with supper and a time of fellowship, followed by singing, praying, and a time of reflection. There will be another Mid-Week summer Service on August 12th. We hope you ll plan to come for this mid-week time to reconnect with God and with each other. NEXT SUNDAY July 12 WORSHIP NOTES: The text from the Hebrew scriptures (2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19) and from the gospel of Mark (6:14-29) are like the stories of our lives and the world. One is a story of building up and the other a story of tearing down. In 2 Samuel, the passage is set in the context of the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Now that it is complete, the climax is the delivery of the Ark of the Covenant, which denoted God s symbolic presence with the people. In Mark s gospel, John the Baptist s preaching of repentance threatens the established power and he is destroyed, beheaded. Mark s account of this story shows how the agents of God who challenge those in power usually suffer significant consequences. The presence of the new temple in Jerusalem place the official presence of God in the midst of the powerful leaders in Israel. These stories call and equip us to be agents of God as we seek to speak truth to power in these days.
