2 T hank you for worshiping with us this morning. We extend a special welcome to our guests and ask that you complete a blue or yellow visitor s card and place it in the offering plate. F or Children: We have trained nursery staff (paid nursery attendant as well as adult volunteers) for children ages 0-3. During our building renovation and construction project, the nursery is located across the street at Trinity Chapel, 10 West Church Street. Enter by front center door of the Chapel or the via the left side walkway entrance of the Chapel. Children age 4 through 2nd grades are welcome to participate in Children s Church which follows a special Children s Thought for the Day. Children s Church is also located in Trinity Chapel during construction. The teachers escort the children to the Chapel after the Thought for the Day and parents will pick their children up in the Chapel after the 10:30 service has ended. Children are also welcome to remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Children s programs, books, crayons and colored pencils are available in the rear of the sanctuary near the welcome table. I n the pew racks are folders with information about the various aspects of the service. If you are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near you and ask them questions about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about the time of offering. This is a time in our service when we respond to God s gifts of love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us, this is when we make a financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also use this time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing God s love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We are just glad you are worshiping with us. A ll are invited to join us for refreshments and conversation following the service. Weather permitting we will be meeting on the sidewalk outside the main sanctuary building or in the basement of the church. W e ask that you please silence your cell phones during our worship service. We also ask that you refrain from applause after our choirs sing or the bell choirs play and allow the music to resonate in the quiet of the sanctuary and in your hearts. Our musicians are playing and singing for the glory of God. They know you appreciate their efforts and their gift. Rest rooms (equipped with changing stations) are located on the first floor of the church building. 3 EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH United Church of Christ - An Open and Affirming Congregation - July 29, 2018 Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time 10:30 a.m. *All who are able may stand. Chimes Concert at 10:00 a.m. from Trinity Chapel s steeple Greetings and Announcements Passing of the Peace *Prelude (We are grateful for your presence as we gather to give praise to God. The prelude music is a time for us to focus on our worship of God. Please use this time to settle your heart and mind as we come together in community to pray, sing, and hear the words of scripture encourage, inspire, and challenge us for the living of these days.) *Call to Worship We worship this day our giving God: God in the crowds, God in the bread, God in the children, God in the bounty. We worship this day our powerful God: God in the storms, God in the sea, God in the boat, God in our fear. We worship this day our living God: God of forgiveness, God of justice, God of miracles, God of our life. Come, let us worship God. Opening Prayer God of miracle power, who can deliver us from our fear of hunger and pain, who can stop the storms and make much from little, spread out the feasting table, walk across the open seas, that we may embrace your radical love for us and know the truth of your miraculous ways. Amen.
4 *Opening Hymn We Worship You, God - No. 26 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession (based on Psalm 14) Fools say in their hearts, There is no God. God looks to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God. God, we confess that we have not always trusted you, that we have not always believed in you, that we have not always been wise, that we have not always sought after your love. Forgive us and look upon us again, that we might offer praise worthy of your name and peace to your creation. Have mercy, God, we pray. Amen. *Assurance of Pardon Jesus said, It is I; do not be afraid. God goes to every length to call us back, providing food to feed our souls and crossing the seas to bring us comfort. God has forgiven us, and empowers us to begin again. Thanks be to God. Amen. Thought for the Day The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (Teachers and children ages 4 through 2 nd grades may be dismissed for Children s Church, located in the back left classroom of the Kindergarten to 2 nd grade classroom in Trinity Chapel.) *Hymn Break Now the Bread of Life - No. 321 The Scriptures Ephesians 3: NT Page 193 John 6:1-21 NT Page 97 Reader: All: The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.
5 Sermon Pastoral Prayer Prayer Response Hear Our Prayer, O God - No. 769 Hear our prayer, O God, hear our prayer, O God; Incline your ear to us, and grant us your peace. Call for Offering Offering of Tithes, Gifts and Lives to Christ s Service Offertory *Presentation of Gifts *Offertory Response We Give You But Your Own - No. 785 We give you but your own, whate er the gift may be; All that we have is yours alone, we give it gratefully. *Prayer of Dedication O God, in the miracle stories of Jesus, we discover the lengths to which you will go for us. Inspire in us the same kind of ministry, that we might multiply bread and cross stormy waters for service to you. Amen. *Service of Farewell and Blessing *Closing Hymn Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ - No. 347 *Benediction Say to one or more people around you, God works miracles! Say to one or more others around you, God provides bread for all! Say to another, God can calm chaos! Say to several people around you, Go out into the miracle of God s world. Threefold Amen - No. 812 Postlude Worship Notes: Today s liturgy is from Seasons of the Spirit.

We will be sharing communion this morning while seated in the pews. Condolences: We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Helen Wilkins. A service of thanksgiving for her life was held on Wednesday, July 18. Sympathy cards can be sent to: Tom Wilkins 510 Adams Road Carlisle, PA Anticipating a stay in the hospital? 9 Worship Committee The Worship Committee will now be meeting on a quarterly basis. The next meeting is Tuesday, July 31 st from 7-9 meeting in the Liz Coffey Room. The Committee welcomes new members and new voices to the table as we reflect on our worship practices and how we can better connect people's spirits with the Spirit of God. By moving to an evening meeting, all our music personnel can attend and we hope that this time change will enable other members and friends of the congregation to attend as well. The Committee will look at how we can enhance our current Sunday morning worship. In addition, with the opening of the new space, we have rooms available for new worship experiences. This is an exciting time in the life of our congregation. Please consider how you may participate in the Worship Committee as well as other groups and teams working on projects as we move into the future. Barbara ERUCC Building Dedication Planning Team On Monday, July 30 th at 7 pm in the Liz Coffey Room, we will have a meeting to explore what we want to do for our Dedication Services to be held on October 7 th. Some work has been done in terms of invitations, music, and painting the rocks as our "give away, but there is so much more to consider for this historic day in the life of ERUCC. Please contact the church office or Pastor Daniel if you are interested in being a part of the planning team for October 7 th Even if you are unable to attend the July 30 th meeting! Interested in church membership? ERUCC will be receiving new members on Sunday, August 12. 10 Interested in a work trip to Puerto Rico? Several of you have asked about a work trip to Puerto Rico. I have been in contact with the UCC disaster ministry folks and we have scheduled a trip from December 1 - December 8. Here is a description from the UCC folks in Puerto Rico: Much of the work is on roofs - they are not very high and are flat and made of cement. We also have metal roofs that require ladder work; inside painting; door and window installation, repairing outside stairs, some electrical and plumbing etc. But there is plenty of work of different levels. -- so, folks who are unskilled or cannot lift heavy things are more than welcome. There are 80 houses on the list to repair. We have a camp for housing (with kitchen, showers, running water etc) and 80 houses on our list to repair. We work Monday - Friday, beginning early and stopping by 1 pm or so - due to heat. Our camp has 3 dorm rooms, each sleeping 18 and each with bathrooms with 2 showers and 3 toilets etc. With airfare, housing, car rental, and food I estimate the cost of this trip to be $600 per person with the church supporting each person by paying half the expense. Contact Pastor Daniel if interested. bkdaniel@erucc.org or LAST CALL! BETHANY BEACH ALL CHURCH RETREAT September 8-10 Days of Fun and Sun Registration Deadline: August 1 st The August 1 st deadline is fast approaching for the all church retreat.
