2 T hank you for worshiping with us this morning. We extend a special welcome to our guests and ask that you complete a blue or yellow visitor s card and place it in the offering plate. F or Children: We have trained nursery staff (paid nursery attendant as well as adult volunteers) for children ages 0-3. During our building renovation and construction project, the nursery is located across the street at Trinity Chapel, 10 West Church Street. Enter by front center door of the Chapel or the via the left side walkway entrance of the Chapel. Children age 4 through 2nd grades are welcome to participate in Children s Church which follows a special Children s Thought for the Day. Children s Church is also located in Trinity Chapel during construction. The teachers escort the children to the Chapel after the Thought for the Day and parents will pick their children up in the Chapel after the 10:30 service has ended. Children are also welcome to remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Children s programs, books, crayons and colored pencils are available in the rear of the sanctuary near the welcome table. I n the pew racks are folders with information about the various aspects of the service. If you are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near you and ask them questions about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about the time of offering. This is a time in our service when we respond to God s gifts of love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us, this is when we make a financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also use this time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing God s love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We are just glad you are worshiping with us. A ll are invited to join us for refreshments and conversation following the service. Weather permitting we will be meeting on the sidewalk outside the main sanctuary building or in the basement of the church. W e ask that you please silence your cell phones during our worship service. We also ask that you refrain from applause after our choirs sing or the bell choirs play and allow the music to resonate in the quiet of the sanctuary and in your hearts. Our musicians are playing and singing for the glory of God. They know you appreciate their efforts and their gift. Rest rooms (equipped with changing stations) are located on the first floor of the church building. 3 EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH United Church of Christ - An Open and Affirming Congregation - July 8, 2018 Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time 10:30 a.m. *All who are able may stand. Chimes Concert at 10:00 a.m. from Trinity Chapel s steeple Greetings and Announcements Passing of the Peace *Prelude Prelude - J. Pachelbel (We are grateful for your presence as we gather to give praise to God. The prelude music is a time for us to focus on our worship of God. Please use this time to settle your heart and mind as we come together in community to pray, sing, and hear the words of scripture encourage, inspire, and challenge us for the living of these days.) *Call to Worship The prophets of old spoke of God s justice, even when it was unwelcome. Who will hear their message? We will listen and we will hear! Responding to God s call, Jesus traveled, preaching and teaching all who would listen. Who will hear his message? We will listen and we will hear! Christ sent out disciples two by two, to spread the good news in any place that would welcome them. Who will hear their message? We will listen and we will hear! God s prophets are among us still, around the world and in these pews. Who will hear their message? We will listen and we will hear! Opening Prayer (in unison) Loving God, you welcome us always and everywhere. No matter how we might feel about ourselves and our place in the world, you open your door and throw your arms open. Help us to feel loved and included by you, and to share that sense of joy and welcome with others. Amen.

4 *Opening Hymn God of the Prophets - No. 358, stanzas 1, 2, 4 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Psalm 123 (sung responsively) pp *Assurance of Pardon Thought for the Day The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (Teachers and children ages 4 through 2 nd grades may be dismissed for Children s Church, located in the back left classroom of the Kindergarten to 2 nd grade classroom in Trinity Chapel.) *Hymn Teach Me, O Lord, Your Holy Way - No. 465 The Scriptures Sermon Mark 6:1-13 NT Page 40 Reader: All: Pastoral Prayer The word of God for the people of God. 5 Offering of Tithes, Gifts and Lives to Christ s Service Offertory *Presentation of Gifts *Offertory Response We Give You But Your Own - No. 785 We give you but your own, what e er the gift may be; All that we have is yours alone, we give it gratefully. *Prayer of Dedication (in unison) Outspoken Prophet, hear the message we are speaking through these our gifts and aid us in spreading that message of hope and love to those whose voices have been silenced. May they strengthen our congregation so that we may continue to listen to those in need. Amen *Closing Hymn O Holy God, Whose Gracious Power - No. 535 *Benediction Go out now with eyes and ears open, to hear and be heard as you share the good news with one another. Threefold Amen Postlude Toccata - No J. Pachelbel Worship Notes: To Hear and Be Heard, An Intergenerational Liturgy for the Seventh Sunday of Pentecost, was written by the Rev. Dr. Laurel Koepf Taylor, Assistant Professor of Old Testament at Eden Theological Seminary, Saint Louis, Missouri. The flowers on the altar this morning are in loving memory of our friend, Melanie Hoffman, by Ann McGreevy. The yellow rose bud on the stand is in honor of those who have served or are currently serving in the military by Kim Sexton. If you are interested in sponsoring the yellow rose, please contact the church office. Attendance Last Sunday: 8:30 11; 10:30 91

6 Every Sunday at 10:30 Want to listen to the sermon again? Visit our youtube channel: You can get to the link on our homepage at July 15 The text from the Hebrew scriptures (2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19) and from the gospel of Mark (6:14-29) are like the stories of our lives and the world. One is a story of building up and the other a story of tearing down. In 2 Samuel, the passage is set in the context of the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Now that it is complete, the climax is the delivery of the Ark of the Covenant, which denoted God s symbolic presence with the people. In Mark s gospel, Mark 6: 14-29, John the Baptist s preaching of repentance threatens the established power and he is destroyed, beheaded. Mark s account of this story shows how the agents of God who challenge those in power usually suffer significant consequences. The presence of the new temple in Jerusalem places the official presence of God in the midst of the powerful leaders in Israel. These stories call and equip us to be agents of God as we seek to speak truth to power in these days. Anticipating a stay in the hospital?
