2 T hank you for worshiping with us this morning. We extend a special welcome to our guests and ask that you complete a blue or yellow visitor s card and place it in the offering plate. F or Children: We have trained nursery staff (paid nursery attendant as well as adult volunteers) for children ages 0-3. The nursery is located on the first floor outside of the Community Room. (Accessible by the stairs from the Church Street Entrance or via the elevator). Children age 4 through 2 nd grades are welcome to participate in Children s Church which follows a special Thought for the Day. Children s Church is located in the Alcove area below the Sanctuary. Children are also welcome to remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Children s programs, books, crayons and colored pencils are available in the rear of the sanctuary near the welcome table. I n the pew racks are folders with information about the various aspects of the service. If you are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near you and ask them questions about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about the time of offering. This is a time in our service when we respond to God s gifts of love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us, this is when we make a financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also use this time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing God s love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We are just glad you are worshiping with us. A W ll are invited to join us for refreshments and conversation following the service in the Community Room located on the first floor and accessible via the stairs or the elevator.. e ask that you please silence your cell phones during our worship service. We also ask that you refrain from applause after our choirs sing or the bell choirs play and allow the music to resonate in the quiet of the sanctuary and in your hearts. Our musicians are playing and singing for the glory of God. They know you appreciate their efforts and their gift. He does the same with us in these modern times. In Mark 10:35-45 he does it again: If you want to be great you have to be servant first. Exploring the lectionary Scriptural texts before the Sunday morning worship (10:30 a.m.) service will help prepare participants to be more fully involved and more present in worship. Come join us as we seek to accurately anticipate what the morning s sermon topic will be. Getting it right is a lot of fun. Facilitated by Richard Leslie and Stefan Mach. Let s Talk 9:30 10:15 a.m. Meets in the North Room of the Parish House The Great Convergence:A series of seven (7) video presentations on how conservative and liberal Christians are coming together and finding common ground and connections. October 14 Was It the Holy Spirit or the Pizza? Phyllis Tickle is featured in this week s video. She is the Contributing Editor in Religion for Publishers Weekly, the international journal of the book industry. Frequently quoted in sources like Newsweek, Time, Life, The New York Times, USA Today, CNN, C-SPAN, PBS, BBC, VOA, etc., Tickle is an authority on religion in America and a much sought after lecturer on the subject. In addition to lectures and numerous essays, articles, and interviews, Tickle is the author of some two dozen books, most of them in religion and spirituality. The Divine Hours: Prayers for Summertime, the first in a three-volume contemporary manual of prayer, was released by Doubleday in March 2000, followed by The Divine Hours: Prayers for Autumn and Wintertime in September In October 2001, the series was completed with the release of The Divine Hours: Prayers for Spring. Pneuma Divina Scripture: John 20: October 21 Faith, Science and our Creator In this week s video, we will hear from Michael Camp, a former Baptist missionary and aid worker for evangelical organizations. Off and on for seven years, he lived and worked in Somalia, Kenya, and Malawi. He has also traveled in Asia extensively representing missions and development organizations. He studied missions at William Carey International University and Fuller Seminary, earned a Master of Science degree at Eastern University in global economic development, and was a senior writer for World Vision. After more than a quarter of a century of involvement in the evangelical movement, including as a missionary, pro-life activist, and lay leader, Michael walked out of the church and conservative religion. Today, as a progressive Christian writer, one of his passions is to help people see they can leave religious legalism behind without losing their faith in God. The sessions are captioned so even if you can t hear every word, you can see it because the captions are large. You will be able to participate in the class without reading the book but I ve included enough information so that you can order it if you would like to do so. Wow, can it really be time to turn the calendar page to October? You know what that means? Soon it will be time to think about Christmas gifts. If you have a 'challenging' person on your shopping list, consider giving a gift card that will also support the building project. For several years, ERUCC has offered this opportunity. Shop with gift cards in everyday categories including groceries, gas, restaurants and more. A percentage of each gift card purchased goes directly to ERUCC. A few days later, we give you the gift card. We get 4% of your purchase = $4.00. Wow! That goes directly to the help pay the mortgage on the new building. There are great options for gifts as well with stores like Gap (14%); LL Bean (16%), Macy's (10%) and more. Orders are placed on the 1st and the 15th of each month. Tiny Tots and God s Kids Club God s Kids Club and Tiny Tots will have their Halloween party on Monday, October 29th around and during Monday Mess Hall. Games and crafts will be available from 4:30 until 6:30. At 6:30 there will be a costume parade. Families are welcome to give out candy (peanut free candy or an alternative is appreciated). Children are encouraged to wear costumes but please make sure they are appropriate for church.

10 Candidate Forum at ERUCC The United Way of Frederick County (UWFC) and the League of Women Voters are excited to announce the 2018 County Executive & County Council Candidate ALICE Report Forum. This event will be held on Monday, October 15 th from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ (15 W Church St, Frederick, MD 21701). The forum represents a collaboration between the League and UWFC to discern candidates plans to address the county s growing ALICE population. ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households represent over 32% of Frederick County s overall population. Most of these individuals are above the Federal Poverty Line, but are unable to afford the county s rising cost of living nor react to emergency financial situations. We encourage all members of the public to attend and interact with their candidates for elected office. More information and registration is available at PANCAKE BREAKFAST: The ERUCC Youth Group's annual pancake breakfast is on Sunday, November 4th from 8-10:30 am. Join us prior to the 8:30 worship service, before Sunday School or in between services. The food, company, and service are sure to be great and all funds raised benefit the youth group's mission and service projects. And...best of all, we will have this for the first time in the new Community Room. It's a bargain - $5.00 per person, $3.00 for children 8 and under and children under 2 are free!
