2 T hank you for worshipping with us this morning. We extend a special welcome to our guests and ask that you complete a blue or yellow visitor s card and place it in the offering plate. I n the pew racks, are folders with information about the various aspects of the service. If you are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near you and ask them questions about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about the time of offering. This is a time in our service when we respond to God s gifts of love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us, this is when we make a financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also use this time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing God s love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We are just glad you are worshipping with us. A W T ll are invited to come down to the Social Room for refreshments and conversations following the service. e ask that you please silence your cell phones during our worship service. here is much information about the church in this bulletin. For more information on our history, programs, and recent photos, you can go to our website: T hank you.

3 EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH United Church of Christ - An Open and Affirming Congregation 4th Sunday in Lent March 15, :30 a.m. The numbered hymns are from the Black Hymnal All who are able may stand. Chimes Concert at 10:00a.m. from Trinity Chapel s steeple Greetings and Announcements Prelude Wondrous Love - L. L. White Call to Worship Leader: ALL: This is the day that God has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Leader: People: Welcome to this sacred place where, indeed, all are welcome. It is here, in this safe space, we receive one another just as we are, just as God receives us. Let us rejoice and be glad in it! ALL: Leader: People: ALL: Leader: People: ALL: Leader: People: ALL: Wherever you are along your life's journey; whatever your name; however you feel--come one and all. We are here to experience the abundance of God's love. Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Come, and experience the invitation to give back to God who has given us life itself. This worship empowers us with the Good News of Christ so that we can share that abundant love with others. Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Come, so that our abundance meets the great needs of the world, and the needs of our sisters and brothers become part of our abundance. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

4 Opening Prayer (in unison) Mother and Father of us all, as we gather together, surrounded by the loving care of this community of faith, we remember all those who are without safety, support, and acceptance in a sacred space of worship this morning. Challenge us to include all who are in need, whether here in our own community or on the other side of the globe, as part of our faith family. Even if we never meet them, may we always invoke their spirits, stories, and names to be co-participants with us in your grace, O God. Guide us to respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters, wherever they may be. Equip us, in all of our abundance, to share what we have so that others may receive what they need to live the abundant life Christ offers us all. Dare us to share, and to do so faithfully, joyfully, and with conviction. O God of all abundance, hear our prayer. Amen. Opening Hymn Bring Many Names - No. 11 Call to Confession Prayer of Confession (in unison) God of sea and sky and sun and rain, God of the African, the Honduran, God of the rich and of the poor and all those in between, we have heard it said that good news for the poor is that they are poor no more. We have learned that Christ came "that they may have life, and have it abundantly. This abundance is yours, offered freely and lovingly, to all of us. Yet instead of thanking you we take it for granted. We forget. We deny. We hoard. We do not always share - even though we know of the tremendous suffering plaguing this world. We confess that we contribute to that suffering when we ignore or avoid it. Forgive us, God, when we withhold. Forgive us our lack of faith. Forgive us our reluctance to trust in you. Forgive us, your privileged people, for not acknowledging our own abundance - all of which comes from you and only you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Leader: Hear the Good News that is ours: by the redemptive, unconditional, and extraordinary love of Christ, we are forgiven. ALL: We are forgiven. Hallelujah! Thought For the Day

5 The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Teachers and children ages 4 through 2nd grades may be dismissed for Children s Church, in Parish House Conference Room, during the singing of the hymn.) The Scriptures Numbers 21:4-9 John 3:14-21 OT page 139 NT page 94 Sermon Healing in the Wilderness Pastoral Prayer Prayers for Healing in the Wilderness Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Like our ancestors wandering in the desert, sometimes we grow impatient and lose our trust in you, O God. When that happens, renew us and make the world whole again, O God. Sometimes fear and mistrust get the best of us, and we respond harshly, or we panic, or we run and hide. When that happens, renew us and make the world whole again, O God. Sometimes we ignore you, God. We know what you want us to do, yet we do other things. We are easily influenced by others. When that happens, renew us and make the world whole again, O God.

6 Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Sometimes we think we have to earn your love, and we don t feel good enough. Sometimes we think that we re better than others, or that we deserve your love and they don t. When that happens, renew us and make the world whole again, O God. Sometimes we ignore you your gracious love and your call to discipleship. Sometimes we live as if you were far away, and had never come to live among us. When that happens, renew us and make the world whole again, O God. Sometimes we get lost in the wilderness of our aches and bruises and illnesses. When that happens, renew us, heal us and make the world whole again, O God. Prayer Response Nothing Can Trouble - No. 772 Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten. Those who seek God shall never go wanting. Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten. God alone fills us. 7 Prayer of Dedication (in unison) Thank you, O God, for the capacity and the privilege of giving. May these gifts, which we give right back to you, transform hunger into nutritious food; literacy into learning; thirst into clean, accessible water; disease into healing; displacement into welcome; and despair into hope. We humbly ask you to consecrate these gifts for the transformation of lives and communities so that our abundance may be for their need and their need become our abundance. To you, God, be the glory! 10 RECEIVED TODAY: VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN HONDURAS by Don Westra Maryjane and I have lived and worked in Honduras for the past year and a half. We work for two separate vocational institutions. Christian Commission for Development is located in inner city Tegucigalpa and works with youth at risk. Gang activity is prevalent in our school s neighborhoods so classes are held on church campuses as well as at our facility. Most students only have to walk 5 minutes to get to a facility. The second school, CEVER, is a project of the community outreach arm of the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Honduras (AIEH). AIEH is involved in vocational education, medical clinics, and community capacity building. CEVER has a modern campus in the rural city of Yoro. In the past, up to 225 students attended classes here. Tuition costs were subsidized by US donations and by the Honduran government. Today, there are only 116 students and donations from both sources have ceased. The goal of the church is to make CEVER less dependent on outside funding, relying on programing for sustainability. CEVER offers courses in Culinary Arts, Woodworking, Welding, and Machining. The school will offer its services to the community. Since no upscale restaurants or meeting rooms exist in this community of 40,000 people, CEVER will utilize its culinary Arts program to fill this gap while teaching students employable skills. Students will begin baking bread to sell in the local grocery stores on an ongoing basis. The school will offer auto mechanic and welding services to the community. Future agreements with auto dealers may include training in exchange for the use of their diagnostic equipment and expertize. AIEH also supports small business development through its micro financing program.

11 Vocational Education is a key that opens doors for people to learn what they need now to earn a better living in the future. It is making a great impact in Honduras. ADVOCACY: CIRCLE OF PRAYER HANDS by Karen Campbell-Nelson After several years of intense research recording the stories of women survivors of anti-communist purges in Nusa Tenggara Timur, the Eastern Indonesian Women s Network for the Study of Women, Religion, and Culture (JPIT) published its findings. The participatory research process they used, forged personal relationships among researchers, most of them pastors, candidates for ministry, and elderly women who have survived with dignity the horrors they witnessed and experienced during Indonesia s anti-communist purges in the mid-1960s. These women and their children have suffered numerous years of institutionalized discrimination and mistreatment. As their stories reveal, the women s survival is linked to their faith in God. The friendships fostered by this research process led to the formation of Sahabat Doa, Prayer Friends, who meet bimonthly. After years of being shunned by the church and society, and without acknowledgement of their unjust treatment or the crimes committed against fathers and husbands who were murdered, these women welcome the healing that comes through praying together. The group includes ordained ministers, even if only a few, who do not seek to erase their history. What further sets apart this prayer group is Sahabat Doa s advocacy orientation. From June to August 2014, JPIT researchers interviewed government and civil society officials in an effort to match available social services with the needs and rights of the women survivors.

21 SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR WHITE OAK HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START SCHOOL This year ERUCC added the White Oak Head Start/Early Head Start School to our mission work during the Franklinton Center Annual trip in the Whitakers and Enfield, N.C. area. Over the Martin Luther King weekend we spent an entire day clearing their playground of leaves and debris. We also did cleaning in the interior of the school to take care of some water damage they incurred in We built three park benches and a picnic table for the site to enhance the outdoor setting for the kids. This is the first time anyone has come to their aid in making the school a more enjoyable experience for the enrolled children. The school primarily serves local Native American children from the ages of 18 months up to 4 years old. After talking with our contact at the school we learned they are in great need of the following school materials: FOR NORTH CAROLINA Pre-school books, Composition books, Crayons washable type, Colored pencils, Construction paper, Glue sticks, Child safe scissors, Hand sanitizer and # 2 pencils The school personnel were very appreciative of the work we did at the school and amazed that a church in Maryland would care enough to help their school. We can be very proud that we are the kind of church that meets these needs not only in Frederick but where the need is great. Please drop off these supplies or cash donations (checks should be made payable to ERUCC with a notation that it is for the White Oak School) to buy supplies to the Church Office between now and April 15, We have an adult mission trip planned to this area from April 16 to April 19 and they can deliver the supplies at that time. If you have any questions please contact either Pastor Barbara or Milt Crutchley. Thank you in advance for your support of this mission!
