1 E xpress Music Lesson 5 The Birth of Moses Exodus 1:1 2:10 (Date of use) Key Point Through Moses, the Lord saved His people from slavery in Egypt. Through Christ, God saves all people from the bondage of sin and death. Law/Gospel In this world, I am enslaved by the demands of Satan. God s Son, Jesus, was born to set me free from the slavery of sin, death, and the devil. Art: Cheri Bladholm Get Ready Read Exodus 1:1 2:10; review Key Point and Law/Gospel Points. Read Preparing the Lesson 5, on CD. Choose the songs, hymns, and activities. Print/copy scores or lyrics for students from CD. Practice using recordings or timed PowerPoint slides; or print scores from CD for live music. Pray that God will bless your students through His gift of music. 2 Start I ll Never Be Alone Track 10 As the children arrive, help them to make maracas using small plastic Easter eggs; plastic spoons; duct tape; and popcorn, rice, or dried beans. Fill one half of the egg partway with the beans, popcorn, or rice. Close the egg. Place a spoon on each side of the egg, nestling the egg in the rounded part. Wrap duct tape around the two spoons and the egg to hold it all together. Decorate the duct tape with markers or stickers. Set the maracas aside while you introduce the song. Say Today, we re going to celebrate with singing and maracas. But first, let s find out what we re celebrating by answering a few questions. Who was rescued in our Bible story? Moses Yes, Moses. That s something to celebrate. And later, through Moses, the Lord would save His people from slavery in Egypt. That s something else to celebrate. And what about you? Who rescued you from sin and death? Jesus Part 1

3 Before you play the CD, show your students how to play the maracas by moving your bent arm forward and back in an arc. Arrange your students in a circle and give them the maracas. Then play the song on the CD several times. Tell the students they can move in their spot as they play and sing, but they are not to move around the room. Say Now it s time to celebrate that God never leaves us alone, no matter what troubles we have. Play and sing the song. (Lyrics or scores can be printed from the CD.) Part 2

4 See This Wonder in the Making Lutheran Service Book 593; Track 17 On the board, write the words wonder, miracle, love, peace, and born again. Ask In today s Bible account, who rescued baby Moses from the water and welcomed him into her life? The princess did. Yes, the princess saved the baby. She had mercy on him. She welcomed him into the royal family. Point to the words on the board. Ask What about you? How did God rescue you? He rescued us through Jesus Christ, our Savior who died and rose again for our sins. Has He been merciful to you? Yes When did He welcome you into His family? The Father welcomes us in Baptism through His Son. Let s find out more in the words of the next hymn. Give your students the lyrics to the song. (They can be printed from the CD.) Ask them to find the words listed on the board and circle them. Talk with the children about how God has rescued them through Jesus Christ in the waters of Baptism. There, in love, God worked a miracle (something only God can do) as He gave us life, forgiveness for our sin, and peace through the Sacrament. The Bible says that in Baptism we are born again. Say Let s sing this hymn. Gather the students to stand in a circle with their lyric sheets. Have everyone listen to the hymn the first time and then join in singing the second time. To make this easier, read through the words of the hymn first without music, using the lyric sheets. Next, assign stanzas: boys sing the first stanza, girls sing the second, and everyone sings the third and fourth stanzas (using the pronoun them).

5 Psalm 46:1 Learn by Heart Bible Songs, p. 13; Track 14 Bring several water goblets or wine glasses and a pitcher of water to class. Show your students how to fill the water glasses and tap the edge of the glass with a pencil to play the note. Try to match the notes of your glasses to the notes of this short song by adding or subtracting water as needed. Say Listen to the next song. Then we ll try to play it with our water glasses. Listen to Psalm 46:1. Then assign children notes on the water glasses. Point to them so they know when to play. After practicing several times, sing the song without the CD, accompanied by the glasses. (Lyrics or scores can be printed from the CD.) Ask How did God use water to save Moses? In a specially lined basket, tiny Moses floated on the water. God was using the water of the Nile to help Moses and His family in a time of trouble. How has God used water to save you? He has used it in the water of Baptism. Say Through Moses, the Lord saved His people from slavery in Egypt. Through Christ, God saves all people from the bondage of sin and death.
