And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. Luke 1:32 Bible Study The Prophets Speak (Genesis 3:15, Isaiah 9, Luke 4:16 21) Arrival Time (3 minutes) GREET families at the door and welcome students into the classroom encouraging them to play with friends. (Be sure to check in the children using the ipad {Plano} or the sign-in sheet {North} and get a phone number.) Introductory Activity (3 5 minutes) Supplies: Paper, pens, towel (brought from home) What You Do Ask the students if they have ever waited on a surprise. Ask them if they wondered what the surprise was while they were waiting. Give each student a piece of paper and a pen. Explain: I have a surprise coming and while we are waiting, I want you to draw what you think it is. Say: Now I want to see if you can guess what it is by what I tell you about it. o It comes in many shapes and colors. o The more it dries, the wetter it gets. o Athletes use it every time they play. o It can be very expensive or it can be very cheap. o Everybody needs one sometime during the day. (Have a teacher bring you a towel.) Ask the students if it is what they thought it was. Why or why not? Explain how it fits the descriptions you gave but it was very different than what they thought. This is exactly what happened when God sent His Son to earth.

2 Bible Time (7 10 minutes) SHOW the Bible lesson cards and teach the lesson using the talking points listed below. PICTURE 1 In our Bible lesson today, we are going to focus on the prophecies in the Old Testament that revealed God was going to send a great deliverer to His people at a certain point in time. It was to the prophet Isaiah that God revealed much information about the coming Messiah. PICTURE 2 God s promises were passed on to Abraham s son Isaac who passed them on to his son Jacob. Jacob had 12 sons. One of them was Joseph who was sold as a slave into Egypt. Later Joseph was reunited with his brothers and saved them from starvation when they came to live with him in Egypt. One of Jacob s sons was named Judah. He had many descendants, one of whom was David. Jesus would come through the line of David. PICTURE 3 King David was the greatest king the Israelites ever had. He was a man who loved God with his whole heart. We remember how he fought the giant Goliath and won an amazing victory for his country. He brought great wealth to the nation of Israel and Jerusalem became its capital city. He made mistakes like all of do but he sought God s forgiveness. Many of the Psalms are written by him and tell of his love for God. Mary and Joseph were two of David s descendants. PICTURE 4 Mary was the mother of Jesus and Joseph was his earthly father. The Gospel writers carefully lay out the lineage of Jesus in the book of Matthew and Mark. PICTURE 5 Most importantly, Jesus was the Son of God. He grew to be a man and began His early ministry. He was baptized by John the Baptist. The Bible tells us that as Jesus came up from the water, a dove appeared and a voice from heaven was heard saying: This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased (Matthew 3:16). The long-awaited Messiah was here Jesus Christ the Lord. Gospel DISCUSS with the students how Jesus perfectly fulfilled the selected prophecies regarding the Messiah when He came the first time as a Suffering Servant. There are many other prophecies to be fulfilled when He comes the second time. Why did the Jewish religious leaders fail to recognize who He was? Religious leaders failed to see that there would be two comings the first as a man who would suffer and die for the sins of all mankind, and the second as a conquering king who would defeat the power of Satan once and for all. They only wanted to see the king, not the Suffering Servant. If He came the first time, will He come again? Read John 14:3. How do we know? Read Hebrews 6:18. There are more prophecies about His Second Coming than there are about His First Coming. We can be sure that one day Jesus will come again.

3 SHARE the plan of salvation and explain how we can know we are ready. Only those who have repented of their sin and asked God to forgive them will be ready. To those who acknowledge Jesus as Savior, God gives the right to be called His children (John 1:12). Bible Learning Project (5 10 minutes) See instructions and supply list provided. Huddle Group (3 5 minutes) Supplies: Pens and paper Give each student a piece of paper and a pen. Discuss each of the Old Testament verses that tell of Jesus. Micah 5:2 The child would be born in Bethlehem. Isaiah 7:14 The child s mother would be a virgin. Isaiah 9:6 7 This child would rule on David s throne and oversee a peaceful kingdom. He would be known by many names. Have them draw a picture of Jesus, then try to draw the other things mentioned in these verses. Memory Verse (3 minutes) Luke 1:32 Say the verse together three times, then divide the class in half and have one half say: He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. Have the other half of the class recite: And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. Have them all recite it like this several times then have them say it all together. Review and Goodbye (5 minutes) Ask the students these questions as they are getting ready to leave: When did God first explain that a redeemer would come to save man from his sinful condition? (in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve were sent away) What do we call Genesis 3:15? (the first Gospel) Explain what this verse is talking about. How is Jesus related to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? (Matthew 1:1 2) Why is this important? MEET families at the door and check security codes. GIVE the parents any handouts or takehome pieces and encourage them to talk with their children about what they learned today.
