UY102 Lesson 1 of 6 Introduce the Lesson Introduce the lesson by reading the Introduction of Lesson 1. God created you differently than any other form of creation you are created in the image of God. You have a dignity that no other creature has. Being an image bearer of God comes with a responsibility. Ask if there are questions about the session or about preparation for the session. Application Questions 1. What is one new thought you had as a result of watching the video? Read Genesis 1:26 27 (NLT) 2. What are three ways that you are unique? (discuss or write them down) We re unique Genesis 1:26 27 informs us that God created humans differently from all other types of creation: Only human beings are made in God s image. Being made in God s image doesn t mean that we physically look like God (John 4:24 tells us God is Sprit). Being made in the image of God doesn t mean we are god any more than wearing a professional sports jersey would make us the athlete whose name is on the back. Being made in God s image means God shared certain snapshots of Himself (on a finite level) with us. God didn t share these snapshots with any other form of creation. In the video, a word was used that we don t often talk about: DIGNITY. According to the dictionary, dignity means the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect. 3. How many of you have ever been disrespected because of your race, or because you were poor, or because of the neighborhood you come from? 4. How did that make you feel? UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 1 1

Lesson 1 of 6 5. Have you ever disrespected anyone just because you were different from them? We have all been given a dignity that calls each of us to respect all human beings as equal, no matter who they are, because humans are the image bearers of God. We have dignity With all of these snapshots, we have been given a dignity that calls each of us to respect all human beings as equal because with all humans (regardless of ethnicity, gender, or status) are the image bearers of God. Some of the snapshots God shared with us are Morality The ability to know the difference between right and wrong. Rationality The ability to make well thought out decisions. Emotions The ability to express, through words and action, how something affects us internally. When we show dignity to others we are acting RESPONSIBLY with the uniqueness each of us has been given. D. A. mentioned in the video that God created us to care for and be responsible over creation. In Genesis 1:26 it says we are to take care of creation. This means humanity is like the supervisor or manager of all things created on earth, not the other way around. Created things should not be the central focus of our life (i.e., animals, plants, food, and drugs). 6. What are some of the ways creation rules over human beings? We have responsibility Being image bearers of God comes with certain responsibilities: In Genesis, God commanded Adam to rule over the rest of creation. Adam, and all humanity, is like the supervisor or manager of all things created on earth. We are not to be submissive to any other forms of creation (i.e., Plants = drugs). God introduced Adam and Eve to the covenant of marriage. This covenant serves as way for them to help each other fulfill God s call to manage creation. The covenant of marriage should result in the birth of children. Parents should raise these children to know and understand how to keep God s commands. 7. According to the Genesis creation accounts, describe what we learn about God s relationship to the world. 8. What do the Scripture passages for this session tell us about God s role and our role in the world? 9. The relationship between God and humans is a key element presented in the creation account. How would you describe that relationship to someone who doesn t know God? 10. Genesis 1:26 30 says that humans are special, created in the likeness of God. Because of that humans are to rule over the rest of creation. What do you think that means? In what ways are humans doing a good job with this responsibility? Where do we need to improve? How does this UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 1 2

Lesson 1 of 6 responsibility make you feel? 11. The covenant of marriage asserts that marriage should result in children. So, should sex only be shared in marriage? How do you feel about that? Do you think this is still true today? Why or why not? Reflection It is important to promote this Reflection time in each session of the course. Ask the members to think back over what they have just experienced and form at least one point they can add to their understanding of God s Word. These insights may or may not match what they expected at the beginning of the lesson. Have them reflect on those affirmations or changes. Also emphasize that this part of the group session could be an important time for participants to minister to other members of the group. Not everyone sees the same emphases and something one person highlights may be an added insight to others in the group. Close in Prayer You may want to ask if anyone is dealing with something they would like prayer for. Depending on the size of your group, it would be meaningful to pray for each person by name. 5 UY102 Lesson 2 of 6 Introduce the Lesson Introduce the lesson by reading the Introduction of Lesson 2. When the world was created, God and Adam and Eve had a great relationship with each other just as God had planned it. There was no drama between men and women! Ask if there are questions about the session or about preparation for the session. Application Questions 1. What is one new thought you had as a result of watching the video? Read Genesis 2:7 25 (NLT) This passage is saying that at one point in human history, our world was drama-free. In this drama-free world God still provided Adam with a job; to steward (or take the best care of) creation. We talked about this the last time we were together. Now that you ve had some time to think about managing creation, let s start with a refresher question: 2. What are three ways we can take care of creation? (discuss or write them down) The relationship with God and Man In the perfect world that once was, God set up a framework that allowed for the world to remain as it was as long Adam obeyed God s commands perfectly. Adam was given all he needed to live perfect because he was created with no flaws. 3. Why is it important for us to work? 4. What types of jobs do you desire to have? 5. What is the difference between a career and a job? Note: Help the students understand that a career speaks to a certain field of work (i.e., education, financial services [i.e., accounting], health care, sales [i.e., insurance, marketing] technology [software].) 6. What career do you desire to have? How are you preparing to work in this field (i.e., college, vo- UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 2 1

Lesson 2 of 6 tech school, etc.)? In the video it was said God gave Adam a job before sin entered into the world. What this means is, having a job is God s design, not a curse. God didn t leave Adam hanging. God provided Adam with a helper to enjoy life with and to help him be productive at his job. The relationship between man and woman was given a framework built by God Himself. Let s take a few minutes to consider this framework. The relationship with Man and Woman The first time in Scripture where God said something was not good is when man was alone. All of the animals had corresponding mates but since Adam was created in God s image, there was no one creature he could have fellowship (or friendship with). So God put Adam to sleep Took one of his ribs and fashioned a woman Gave her to Adam as a gift (the first wedding in human history) God put Adam and Eve together to Have direct fellowship with each other Serve as each other s helpers in the work God gave them Reproduce (have children) and fill the earth with other image bearers of God who followed God s commands Genesis 2:25 tells us that Adam and Eve were naked and not ashamed. This means They had no fear of being exposed There was no drama in their relationship because there was no sin 7. What does your relationship to God look like? 8. What broken relationships do you want to see healing in? 9. Since sin has broken our relationships, how can we ask God to put our relationship with Him back in order first, so we can work to see healing in the broken relationships in our lives that matter most? D. A. mentioned in the video that the blessing of a drama-free relationship between Adam and Eve was a result of their direct relationship with God. D. A. then challenged us to ask ourselves: Do we have a direct relationship with God? How does your relationship (or lack of relationship) with God relate to the broken relationships in our lives? 10. Review the Scripture passages from this session and write down what each of these passages teaches you about God. 11. How is your relationship with God reflected in your relationships with people? 12. How does it make you feel to know that God loves you enough to wipe away and forgive your sin? 7 Lesson 2 of Do our relationships with other people reflect the image of God? 14. God designed a beautiful garden for humans to live in, provided us with a job, and created a helper to help us enjoy life. How does this make you feel about God? How does this make you feel about life? How can you make your life better reflect the life God wants for you? Reflection It is important to promote this Reflection time in each session of the course. Ask the members to think back over what they have just experienced and form at least one point they can add to their understanding of God s Word. These insights may or may not match what they expected at the beginning of the lesson. Have them reflect on those affirmations or changes. 8 UY102 Lesson 3 of 6 Introduce the Lesson Introduce the lesson by reading the Introduction of Lesson 3. What is sin? How did this affect the relationship between God and men and women? Why do you sin? Ask if there are questions about the session or about preparation for the session. Application Questions 1. What is one new thought you had as a result of watching the video? Read Genesis 3:1 19 (NLT) That Scripture just introduced us to the fact that one man s sin ruined the direct relationship between God and humans. Not only was our relationship with God ruined but our relationships with other humans were affected as well. 2. What are three ways sin has ruined the relationships in your life? (discuss or write them down) Eve was deceived The serpent did something do Eve that still goes on today the questioning of God s Word. Did God really say? Let s work through this for a few minutes because the enemy is still up to his old tricks today. 3. How does the enemy sow seeds of doubt about God s Word in our minds today? 4. What are some of the doubts you have about God and His Word? 5. What are some ways the enemy s doubts cause us to disobey God s commands (aka sin )? In the video, D. A. said the enemy came to Eve and started his work of deception by sowing seeds of doubt in her mind. He first asked the question, Did God really say? This tactic caused her to rethink God s command. You see God clearly spoke the command to Adam and it was Adam s UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 3 1

Lesson 3 of 6 responsibility to then share it with Eve. The enemy successfully deceived Eve. However, in the text, there is nothing saying he also deceived Adam. In fact, the enemy never said one word to Adam. It was Eve who shared the fruit with Adam, who then took it and ate it. Adam was not deceived. Adam directly disobeyed God. Adam was disobedient Eve, being deceived by the serpent, took and ate the fruit. Then she gave it to Adam (who didn t talk to the serpent). When Adam ate the fruit he directly disobeyed God. Adam was humanity s first father, so, when he fell, we all fell. When he sinned he died spiritually and passed that death on to all of us 6. What are some of the ways you ve naturally committed sins? 7. What are some ways sin has affected your relationship with God and others? D. A. said Adam introduced brokenness to our world and now it has trickled down to each and every one of us. D. A. said we all inherited a sinful nature from Adam. Our depravity (corruption) At that moment of disobedience according to Romans 5:12 (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) Sin and death entered into our world. Guilt and shame forced them to run away from God. Adam and Eve had to leave the garden. Fellowship with God was no longer open He s holy and is separated from all things and all people. When Adam fell we all fell. We re all born sinners (Psalm 51:5 & Psalm 58:3) (Leader Note: Ask a student to read these passages.) 8. How do we sin in thought? in how we talk? in our actions? 9. What makes sin seem so good instead of so bad? 10. What do you think of God s punishment for Adam and Eve s disobedience? 11. Is there more satisfaction in disobedience or obedience? Why? 12. Sin is not just about breaking God s rules. Sin is also about the breakdown of a relationship with God. How has your sin affected your relationship with God? How has your sin affected your relationship with other people? Reflection It is important to promote this Reflection time in each session of the course. 11 UY102 Lesson 4 of 6 Introduce the Lesson Introduce the lesson by reading the Introduction of Lesson 4. Sin has left you with consequences and a cost. The cost is death. Why then are you still allowed to live today if you are full of sin? How does this cost get paid? Ask if there are questions about the session or about preparation for the session. Application Questions 1. What is one new thought you had as a result of watching the video? Read John 8:34 (NLT) According to John 8:34, anyone who commits a sin is a slave to sin. The whole human population is enslaved to sin because we inherited, from Adam, a sinful nature and have all sinned. Sin carries consequences and has a cost associated with it. When we look around our lives and see people who go hard after sin we should grieve about their condition, not get upset at them. We grieve because before we knew Jesus as our Savior we were slaves to sin too. 2. What sins have held mastery over you in your life? (discuss or write them down) Sin s consequence The consequence for sin is death. Genesis 3:21 And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. When Adam sinned God allowed them to live by having an animal die in their place (substitution). The animal s skin covered up their shame. It didn t remove the shame, only covered it. Even though we are fallen, we are still image bearers of God. God still desires to have a UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 4 1

Lesson 4 of 6 relationship with us. 3. How do you feel when your sins are exposed? 4. Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with leaves but it didn t to the job. What are the things you try to cover yourself with when your sins are exposed (i.e., good behavior, saying I m sorry, going to church, etc.)? In the video D. A. said the evidence of sin s consequence was seen when God killed the animals instead of Adam and Eve. In doing this, Adam and Eve were allowed to live. When their nakedness was exposed, God clothed them with the skin of the animals that died instead of them. We can try to cover our sins but we will never remove them; only God can do that. D. A. said in our video that death of the animals provided a temporary cover for our sins. In addition to the consequence for our sin, there s also a cost. Sin s cost The shedding of blood. The animal s blood covered the sin of Adam and Eve but it didn t wash it away. Leviticus chapters 1 7 inform us that all sacrifices for sin are to not have any stains or blemishes. The word atonement means to cover up (like a plastic cover on a couch). Blood that is shed from a substitute sacrifice covers the sins of the sinner and they are allowed to live. Hebrews 9:22 says, In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. The Old Testament sacrifices only covered the sins of God s people; never did the sacrifice wash them away. God was setting up the people to look for something more. In our next video we ll walk through what God had in mind. 5. Why do you think God designed it so there s only one acceptable form of payment for our sins? 6. What do you think it takes for all of our sins to be wiped away? It is part of God s plan to have only one way for the debt of sin to be paid off with the shedding of blood. However, as we ve seen in Scripture, all the blood shed by animals never completely wipes away our sin. 7. Review the Scripture passages for this session again. What does each passage teach us about sin? What did we learn about the will of God? UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 4 2

Lesson 4 of 6 8. What are some words or phrases that describe how you feel when you have sinned? 9. What has this session revealed to you about God? Reflection It is important to promote this Reflection time in each session of the course. Ask the members to think back over what they have just experienced and form at least one point they can add to their understanding of God s Word. 14 UY102 Lesson 5 of 6 Introduce the Lesson Introduce the lesson by reading the Introduction of Lesson 5. Jesus is the only one qualified to free you from sin and pay off your debt. He did this for you because you are valued and loved by Him. What qualifies Him to do this? Ask if there are questions about the session or about preparation for the session. Application Questions 1. What is one new thought you had as a result of watching the video? So far in our story it seems hopeless. If we re all born in sin, have sinned, and are slaves to sin who can we turn to for freedom? The good news of the gospel s message is that Jesus Christ is the only qualified Savior who can free us from sin s slavery! The Bible is clear in unpacking how the work of Jesus Christ saves sinners from sin. Christianity is set apart from all other religions and philosophies by our belief in Jesus Christ. We believe that it is through Jesus Christ alone that sinners can have their debt completely discharged and canceled! Read John 1:1 14 (NLT) What that Scripture is telling us is Jesus (the Word) is essentially God, eternally God, and equal with God (in verse 1). Then John builds the case the Jesus, being fully God, entered into our world, and put on flesh like we put on clothes. He did this in order to live the perfect life we could never live, so He could offer Himself in our place to die. 2. What do you think about this passage saying Jesus being fully God, added to His nature full humanity, so He could feel what we feel and understand our circumstances? (discuss or write them down) UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 5 1

Lesson 5 of 6 Matthew 20:28 (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) Tells us the reason Jesus came in the flesh was to give His life as a ransom for many for means in the place of someone else (substitution) ransom means to buy a slave out of slavery (this is what Jesus can do for sinners) Hebrews 9:22-26 (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) Jesus offered Himself in the place of sinners because his life was perfect (without blemish) God accepted this offering. The proof is found by the fact that Jesus rose from the grave. Romans 4:24-25 (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) Jesus resurrection is the proof God s was pleased with Jesus sacrifice and we can now be set free from sin! Acts 1:9-11 (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) Jesus ascended back to the Father and will come back again for believers. 3. After hearing what Jesus has done what thoughts come to your mind about how His life can affect yours? 4. Through Jesus, God is offering you a way out of slavery. What are some issues you think of that would prevent you from accepting God s offer for freedom? 5. Do you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior? In the video D. A. said Jesus purpose for coming to earth was to pay off our sin debt. Jesus knew this was something we couldn t do alone. The gospel message is clear when it presents Jesus as the only one who could pay off our sin debt. The gospel message tells us that we can have our sin debt completely wiped away if we believe Jesus to be our Lord and Savior. The conversation may go into a time where your students may need to place their faith in Jesus. If they are ready, feel free to lead them in a prayer that walks them through their belief of the gospel message. Now would be a good time to think about the way you ve lived your life before knowing Jesus. How you can live differently after meeting Him? Let s take time to think through how we can apply the gospel message into the following areas of our lives: 6. How would you describe your relationship with Jesus right now? 7. How do you let Jesus rule in your heart? Do you find this difficult? 8. How did Jesus sacrifice Himself and why is that important? 9. Think about Jesus sacrifice for a moment, envision it. How does that make you feel? 10. How would your life be different if you lived each day in a relationship where you honored God through Jesus? UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. 16 Lesson 5 of 6 Reflection It is important to promote this Reflection time in each session of the course. Ask the members to think back over what they have just experienced and form at least one point they can add to their understanding of God s Word. These insights may or may not match what they expected at the beginning of the lesson. Have them reflect on those affirmations or changes. 17 UY102 Lesson 6 of 6 Introduce the Lesson Introduce the lesson by reading the Introduction of Lesson 6. Because of Jesus death and resurrection, you can be saved from sin and death. Your sin is wiped clean and your dignity is restored. What do you need to do to receive this gift from Jesus? Ask if there are questions about the session or about preparation for the session. Application Questions 1. What is one new thought you had as a result of watching the video? When a sinner hears about what Jesus has done for them and admits they are sinners, realizes they cannot save themselves, believes that Jesus is Lord, and confesses this with their mouths Romans 10:9 tells us they will be saved. We believe in all that Jesus did through His perfect life, death, burial, and resurrection. The term we use to describe our turning away from sin and turning to Jesus is called repentance. Since we were born dead in sin the moment we put our trust in Jesus to save us we are born again. This means we now have been given spiritual life by God through the Holy Spirit (according to John 3:3 8) - (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) The life Jesus gives is eternal! Now, we who have embraced Jesus have eternal life and have an open relationship with God, through Jesus, that was lost in the garden. Read John 11:25 26 (NLT) This Scripture is telling us that Jesus Christ is the source of life. Anyone who rejects His offer to free them from their slavery to sin will remain spiritually dead and will never receive life. Those who embrace Jesus as their Lord and Savior will receive eternal life. 2. What comes to your mind when you hear the words eternal life? (discuss or write them UY102 Leader s Guide 2016 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 6 1

Lesson 6 of 6 down) John 11:25 26 Jesus Christ is the resurrection. Dead sinners who hear the gospel can only be saved if they come to Him. There is no hope of being saved out of sin outside of embracing Jesus Christ as Savior. John 14:6 (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) This is where Jesus tells us that He alone is the way, the truth and the life. No man can come to the Father unless they come through Him alone. 3. What does it look like to live like you have eternal life? 4. What are some changes that should take place in your decision making process now that you have eternal life? In the video, D. A. said eternal life doesn t begin when we die; rather, it begins the minute we confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! One thought that helps us wrap our minds around eternal life is looking at Scripture to see what life in heaven looks like. The apostle Paul breaks down this reality in 1 Corinthians Corinthians 15:12 58 (Leader Note: Ask a student to read this passage.) Jesus resurrection is the living proof that we can be resurrected. Here s the reality of our resurrection and the eternal life we will have in Christ: In heaven we ll never be sick or die. In heaven we ll never wrestle with or fall into sin again. In heaven we ll always be close with God (like Adam was in the garden). Our dignity is restored only in Jesus Christ. Heaven will be our reality. That s the goal we have in our minds that drives us to live for Jesus now. 5. What hope does Jesus resurrection give us? 6. Reflect on this sessions Scripture passages. What do they tell us about Jesus? 7. John 3:3 8 is a conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus. What questions did Nicodemus have and what were Jesus answers? How would you share Jesus answers with someone who doesn t know Jesus? 8. What does it mean that Jesus is our Lord? How do we confess Jesus as our Lord in our words and actions? 9. Tell us your story. On a piece of paper write out your story of how you became a Christian. If you have not made this commitment yet still write your story.
