1 VOLUME 16 ISSUE 3 MARCH 2016 A Visit from the Wizard We had a surprise visit from the Wizard during our worship services a week ago. He created quite a stir, having crashlanded in our neighborhood on his way back to Kansas. In fact, before he arrived here, he had crash-landed all over the Twin Cities trying to find his way back home. As it happens, the Wizard learned quite a bit about our congregation from people he had met at his crash sites at Open Hands Midway, Solid Ground, and Willow Lane Elementary School. He was very impressed by the stories people told him about the wonderful things people from Redeemer have been doing in their neighborhoods. Before he left, he told us that Redeemer Lutheran Church was a lot like Lion, Scarecrow and Tinman, who were looking for gifts that they already possessed. He said generosity we re seeking with our No Place Like Home annual and three-year capital appeal already exists within our community. As he pointed out, that generosity has been demonstrated again and again and again. We ll get to celebrate that generosity on Sunday, March 6, as we return our commitments for the No Place Like Home appeal. I invite you to wear your ruby slippers or dress like your favorite Wizard of Oz character as we celebrate the gifts that we ve been given and the marvelous ministry that they will make possible here at Redeemer. And, be sure to bring your commitment card to worship with you. I also invite you to consider how you might introduce someone new to this place that s like no other. This month, you have so many opportunities for exciting invitations. You could invite someone to come see the new movie, Risen, on Sunday, March 6. If you do, be sure to have them stay for conversation afterward so they ll get a chance to know just how friendly and fun Redeemer folks are. If they have Children, you can invite them to the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 19, at AM. On Sunday, March 13, you could invite them to experience Celtic worship with the Second Half outing to the Mac-Groveland neighborhood. On Palm Sunday, they can join you to make a Peeps Diorama between worship services. Maybe they d win the contest! On Good Friday, they could experience the Stations of the Cross during worship at 7 o clock. On Easter Sunday, they could join you for celebration worship at or AM. And, maybe you could invite them to Easter brunch following worship. If you plan ahead, you could even serve one of those delicious butter braids the youth are selling to raise funds for their Christikon trip this summer. All of these events and more are described in this newsletter. I hope you will find at least one opportunity to invite someone to join you in experiencing a little Redeemer hospitality this month. 2 LENT 2016 HOLY WEEK WORSHIP Open our eyes, Lord; we want to see Jesus. Palm Sunday - March 20 Maundy Thursday - 7 PM, March 24 Good Friday - 7 PM, March 25 Easter Sunday - March 27 Mark s Gospel is told with a sense of urgency to help us understand exactly who Jesus is. He flips our expectations of leadership and teaches us a whole new way, a way of humility and generosity, a way of peace and perseverance, even in the face of crushing opposition... See RISEN in the theater with Redeemer members! Sunday mornings, we ll travel along with Mark as Jesus courageously lives the way He teaches to his disciples, a way that leads him, ultimately, to the cross. WHAT: Risen is the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a powerful Roman military tribune and his aide as they seek to discover what happened to Jesus after the resurrection. Of course, as people of faith, opening our eyes to see who Jesus really is is only the beginning of our faith journey. As we grow in faith, we want to open our whole lives to His way, following His example and putting His teachings into practice ourselves. Wednesday evenings, we ll deepen our understanding of the way and focus on opening ourselves in new ways to the teachings of Jesus. MIDWEEK LENTEN SERVICES, 6:00 PM 3/2 Open My Ears, Lord Experience meditating with music Soup supper - 5 PM; no classes. WHEN: Sunday, March 6, 1 PM (Discussion to follow in the lounge.) 3/9 Open My Heart, Lord Bring your extra change for our noisy offering and vote on our recipient of our midweek Lenten offerings. 3 From left to right: Ann Marie Gere, Jane Schroeher, Tom Will, Amy Maijala (alternate), Alan Gengenbach, Mike Semonick, Eric Sjursen (alternate), Kathy Sjursen, Pastor Pam Stofferahn, Sam Maijala Say Hello to the Call Committee The call committee was elected by our congregation council on February 11 and met with Sister Noreen Stevens from the St. Paul Area Synod on February 18 to receive their commission to lead Redeemer s call process for our new pastors. Over the next month, they will be familiarizing themselves with the job descriptions for two part-time associate pastor positions - one for children, youth and family ministry and one for congregational care ministry - and developing interview plans and questions for the candidates who will be presented to them in April. The members of the call committee want to invite all congregation members to participate to some degree in the process of calling our next pastors. If, as you visit other congregations or talk with your friends and relatives, you become aware of a pastor whom you think may fit the ministries of our congregation, let the call committee know by completing a Candidate Nomination Form. You can pick up copies of the nomination form and the job descriptions at the church office. Please submit your nominations to the church office as soon as possible, but no later than March 30. Look for more updates to come in future issues of Crossroads, and please keep the call process and call committee members in your prayers. No Place Like Home - Redeemer s 2016 Annual and Three-Year Capital Appeal began Sunday February 6. If you did not pick up materials at church or receive them in the mail, please inquire in the office. The campaign ends March 6. Crossroads of Redeemer rlcwbl.org Page 3
