1 LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER 10 Adirondack Lane, Plattsburgh, N.Y (518) Website: : gregory.huth@gmail.com pastor@redeemerplattsburgh.com MARCH 2018 The Mission of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer is: To Welcome all people to Christ and to Equip them to Praise God in Life and Worship A Message from our Pastor As we begin our 60th anniversary year here at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, we re entering Lent on a grateful note, with a $5,000, no-strings-attached, anonymous donation. At our January council meeting, we agreed to dedicate up to $2,000 of this generous gift to replacing the tables and chairs in the fellowship hall. We will also purchase a baby changing station, which the church has needed for some time. Expenditures over $1500 require the approval of members, so at the Feb. 25 worship service, it was announced that Redeemer would hold a congregational meeting to vote on this proposal following worship on Sunday, March 11. Please plan to attend worship on this day so that we will have the quorum of voting members necessary to make the vote official. We re hoping to have the new equipment and amenities in place in time for Holy Week, and our Maundy Thursday, Passover Seder meal, on March 29, not to mention our Easter morning breakfast that we will serve preceding the worship service on April 1. In community news, the Grateful Fed celebration of the Interfaith Food Shelf will be held on Saturday, March 10, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the VFW Hall on Boynton Ave. The event is a talent show featuring local musicians, dancers, and other performers. Admission is free, but a free-will offering of non-perishable food or money is invited. If you can t make the performance, please bring your food donation to church on Sunday, March 4, and we will transport it to the VFW. For a cash donation, make the check out to Redeemer Lutheran Church and put Food Shelf in the memo line. Place the check in the March 4 offering. Finally, council is inviting ideas for a service project to help celebrate our 60th anniversary. 2 A Report from our Council President Major items of business from our February meeting included: A decision to make our 60th anniversary as a congregation our focus for A decision to put before the voters a proposal to replace the tables and chairs in the fellowship hall and to add a changing table as part of our 60th anniversary gift to ourselves. Discusion included a report of non-budgeted general fund giving of seveeral thousand dollars received in February which could be used to offset the project. Pastor to price these items to support a vote. Vote scheduled for March 11 after service. A decision to classify both our organists as independent contractors rather than employees and to pay both the same at $120 per service. A decision to have members of council as backup to the financial secretary to handle collections in the case of his absence. It s still not too late to start a year s good habit. Child: 150 Psalms for Teens The book provides teens with the Psalms, in updated, contemporary language, so they might learn how to better identify their emotions and God s care for them at all times. O Hallesby Hal In a book geared toward people that struggle in their personal prayer life, the author aims to clear readers' minds about their need for prayer and strengthen their will to do it, as well as flood their souls with goodness and love of God. 4 Sunday School Schedule April dates are April 8th and 22nd. These are second and Fourth Sundays to work around Easter. We are also preparing for the annual Easter egg hunt and are looking for plastic eggs to fill. If you have any you don't need please let Judy Cook know. Worship Service: The Resurrection of our Lord BY HEART STORYTELLING THE PASSION OF OUR LORD Each year members of Redeemer divide up the Palm Sunday story of the Jesus Passion and storytell it to the congregation. We have done this for at least ten years. All who participate learn to tell their assigned Gospel passage by heart, that is, we don t read it, but we learn it so well that we tell it to our hearers as if it is our own story. This year we will tell the Passion from Mark. Please be sure to attend Palm Sunday, March 25, so that you can be a part of our audience.
