1 VOLUME 16 ISSUE 12 DECEMBER 2016 Learning to Walk in the Dark Just like that, we ve moved from the Thanksgiving table to the mall... but here at church, we re inviting you to slow the pace a bit as we enter the season of Advent... a time of waiting and watching... a time of shortening days and increasing darkness. Sometimes we rush through this season, but this year, we want to mine the treasures of the dark. Listen to these words of God from Isaiah, who promises to meet us even in the darkest places: I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. Barbara Brown Taylor, in her book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, talks about walking in the dark as a spiritual skill that many of us could use right now... not just those of us who suffer with chronic illnesses or who have been sexually abused, or are dealing with grief and loss, but those of us who find ourselves in the places in life where some of our dreams have died, or doors we ve knocked on have not opened, or the jobs that once defined us have lost their meaning, or the relationships that once sustained us have changed or come to their natural ends. Each of us will encounter seasons where we need to reinvent everything... from our work lives to our love lives to our lives with God... and sometimes that work leads us into a walk in the dark, a walk into the darker sides of ourselves in which we might be invited to do some of the hard work that the Holy Spirit calls us to do in order to become more and more of what God calls us to be. Patricia Lull, Bishop of the St. Paul Area Synod, writes in a public letter (dated November 18, 2016), about the cultural darkness in our nation right now, inviting us to do some collective ruminating about how God might be pulling us into new places that require us to move outside of our comfort zones and into the darkness of the unknown toward a new, better future for all of us: This is a sober time for reflection about who we are as a nation and a church. It is a time to pray for God to guide us to live as neighbors with those with whom we disagree. It is a time for us to reach beyond our past answers and to engage people, whose lives seem so unlike our own. It is a time for us to discover new ways to build communities that are defined less by being with people just like ourselves and more as places of trust and work for the common good. She goes on to issue an invitation: In ancient times, Advent was a season for repentance as well as joyful anticipation. I invite us as a synod to make this season one in which we pray and work not for the world as we like it to be but for the world as God calls it to be. I would add that we should also pray for ourselves to become the people God is calling us to be. During worship in these weeks of Advent darkness, we re going to be exploring the darkness a bit and encouraging one another not to be afraid of the dark... for sometimes we have much to learn there about ourselves and about the experiences and values that have shaped us. And one of the things we need to learn in any season of darkness is to trust that even when we cannot see where we re going, we are not alone. 2 Advent Message Series: Learning to Walk in the Dark Midweek Advent Services begin Nov. 6 PM Advent Fair - Nov. 6:30 PM "I have learned things in the dark that I could never have learned in the light, things that have saved my life over and over again, so that there is really only one logical conclusion. I need darkness as much as I need light." Barbara Brown Taylor, from Learning to Walk in the Dark. The season of Advent falls within the darkest time of the year. The days are short and the nights are long. As we light the candles of Advent, anticipating Christ's coming, we will reflect on the importance of darkness in our journeys of faith using scripture and Barbara Brown Taylor's work, Learning to Walk in the Dark, as our guides. Join the Redeemer Chorale on Sunday, Dec. 18 for a Hymn Festival at AM! Savior of the Nations, Come is an Advent/Christmas Hymn Festival that features wonderfully creative hymn arrangements. This stirring collection will draw us from Advent into Christmas and have us singing out in praise! That s because things are still financially tight for many families across the country. While buying gifts on credit may seem like a good idea at the point of purchase, you may regret this when it comes time to pay your bills. We ve put together some tips to help you keep your holiday debt under control. 1. Reduce your gift list. If you ve found yourself with a gift list that is too long, suggest your family draw names so that each family member only has to purchase one gift. You could also cut out the adults and focus on kids. 2. Estimate holiday expenses and set a budget. Make a list of everyone you have to purchase gifts for, then figure out how much you can afford to spend on them. Set the dollar amount based on what you can afford this holiday season considering your current savings, income and other expenses. 7 Ways, Continued on page 5.. Thank you for your generosity! Because Redeemer has again shown its generosity, our fall fundraising campaign contributed $3,000 toward the ELCA New Congregations, with $1,000 sent to each of the ELCA, Humble Walk and Lydia Place in St. Paul. Starting early will give you time to shop around and ensure you are getting the best deal on your purchases. 4. Make a list, and then shop around. Write down the names of the people you plan to buy gifts for, and what you plan on buying. Then, take time to do some research on the best deals before you hit the stores 5. Use credit wisely. If you re using your credit card for your holiday shopping, be cautious. Don t spend more than you can afford 6. Take a hands-on approach. If you can t afford to buy gifts for everyone on your list, make homemade gifts instead. 7. Look for frugal activities. The season is all about being together and you don t need to spend money to do that. Whether you re making crafts or decorating cookies, get your friends and family involved. Another free winter family activity is an outing to see holiday light displays. Holiday concerts are also plentiful this time of year and don t have to be expensive. Finally, the holidays are the perfect time to teach your kids about giving back. Consider volunteering this season. It not only brings your family together, it s a good lesson on compassion for kids and grownups alike. The holiday season should be about joy, good company and lots of time with family and friends. There s no need to overspend on those things. Don t be tempted by the commercials luring you to buy. Instead, focus on what really matters. Happy holidays! 6 Redeemer Book Club - January Meeting Tuesday, January 10, 7 PM in the Library Book: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman Leader: Sue Eddy Read the New York Times bestseller that has taken the world by storm! Meet Ove. He s a curmudgeon the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents association to their very foundations. If there was an award for Most Charming Book of the Year, this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down. Greetings to our fabulous community of faith partners: I d like to thank all of you for your support for the food shelf and to ask you to pass along a couple of requests to your congregation. We are entering a season when the problems of hunger and need become much more obvious and heartbreaking. I am also encouraged this time of year by the generosity and love that we see demonstrated by people who just want to help others. That generosity, in the form of food donations has created an urgent need for volunteers to sort, check and stock the food donations that have started to fill our warehouse. This is where we could use your help: 1. Pray that those in need will find their way to our door and that we will continue to have enough resources to serve them. 2. Spread the word that we could use some help sorting and stocking our warehouse. This is a great small group activity. Please feel free to share my and/or phone with anyone who is interested in helping in any way. Sorting and stocking volunteering can happen any time we are open: Mon., Wed., Fri. between 8:00 AM 1:00 PM or Tues., Thurs., from 1:00 7:00 PM. Thank you very much for your support, Lee Bailey-Seiler, Volunteer Coordinator White Bear Area Emergency Food Shelf 1884 Whitaker St. WBL, MN Whitebearfoodshelf.org facebook.com/wblfoodshelf P.S. - THANK YOU for you donation of $250 to the WB Area Emergency Food Shelf s Kid Pack program!..
