1 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 1 JANUARY 2018 Being Neighborly in the New Year Usually our New Year s resolutions have to do with self-improvement read more books, start a practice of daily devotions, exercise more, lose a few pounds but what if our New Year s plans focused on investing in others instead of ourselves for a change? What if we resolved to be better neighbors? As a congregation, we work to be good neighbors in many ways. We make a difference for our neighbors by rescuing food from local businesses to share with hungry people in the Midway neighborhood. We make a difference for young students in the neighborhood by reading with them weekly at a local elementary school. We make a difference for our young neighbors in a local transitional housing complex by running a boys club to provide positive role models and healthy activities for youngsters on a monthly basis. We make a difference for our senior neighbors by providing a wealth of resources and programs for older adults through our 2nd Half Ministry and our partnership with Lyngblomsten. Recently, our council took another step toward neighborliness with Cerenity, a care center and senior living complex in White Bear Lake. The Cerenity Administrator, Patrick McDonald, and Chaplain, Scott Cartwright, asked us if we d be willing to serve as a disaster recovery site for the care center in case of an emergency that rendered their facility inoperable. Without hesitation, our council said, Yes! At our November 2017 council meeting, we voted to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with Cerenity that would enable them to set up nursing stations in our Atrium and Fellowship Hall, in the event of an emergency at their facility. That agreement became effective December, Of course we hope that we ll never have to activate that agreement, but we re ready to support Cerenity in any way we can should the need arise. That s what neighbors do! Committing ourselves to being available to support others in their need requires a certain level of risk. We sometimes may not know the full extent of what being neighborly might require of us. But by faith we live and give of ourselves, trusting that God will provide the means for us to be the good neighbors that God calls us to be. As we enter the New Year, I invite you to take a risk to grow in neighborliness. You might start by joining a neighbor in their snow-shoveling (whenever that big snow hits), sharing some of your left-over Christmas treats, or inviting the neighbors over for a New Year s potluck--or just a warm cup of coffee. Reach out to get to know the neighbors you haven t met yet and welcome new neighbors into the neighborhood. Newcomers always appreciate being welcomed! The cold of winter doesn t need to make us cold to our neighbors. See if you can warm things up a bit with a little New Year s intentionality to invite and ignite some new friendships! Looking forward to seeing you in church! Pastor Pam

2 SPIRITUAL CARE As we enter into 2018, it is natural for us to think of resolutions ways in which we resolve to improve our lives whether in mind, body or spirit. In the past fifteen years or so, much has been written on how cultivating an attitude of gratitude positively affects nearly every aspect of our lives. And there is now scientific evidence, measurable and quantifiable, to prove it. Dr. Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at UC Davis and the author of Gratitude Works, details some of these findings in his book and in many of his lectures. Among them, people who feel grateful and express gratitude enjoy an increased sense of emotional well being; they get along better with others; feel less depressed; are more goal oriented; more generous, giving and forgiving; and more resilient to trauma. Physically, people who are grateful exercise more; they re less likely to smoke and use alcohol; they adhere to medication plans; engage in health promoting rather than health damaging behaviors; have lower blood pressures and improved lipid panels (more good fat than bad fat circulating in their blood). Jesus said, I came that they (my sheep that s us!) may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10 An abundant life is a grateful life, thanks be to God. So how might we practice being grateful? Here are a few ways to begin: Spend time with some psalms of thanksgiving and praise (33, 34, 100, 107, 118 and 146). Look for the good in life and experience the joy that comes with it. Receive the goodness knowing that is a gift of grace. Give back the good in a spirit of love. In other words, pay it forward. Send cards, make phone calls, give compliments, pray for and recognize opportunities to help others. Keep a daily gratitude journal not merely listing, but rather focusing on the reason(s) behind your gratitude. Think quality and depth, not quantity. Gratitude, Dr. Emmons states, is like a muscle. In order to strengthen it, we must consistently use it! May 2018 be a year of grateful and grace filled living for you and yours. Peace and blessings, Pastor Candee Page 2 rlcwbl.org Crossroads of Redeemer

3 KEVIN MAIJALA Spiritual Growth Amy and I moved to White Bear Lake in 1999 and looked for a place where we felt welcome and engaged with the community. We quickly landed at Redeemer and haven't looked back since! I feel often like I am "Amy's husband" or "Sam and Grace's dad" because they are so visible at Redeemer. Sam currently works setup for the church and is a precocious 15-year old learning to rive. Grace is 13-going-on-22 and is the drama of our lives. Amy is incredibly active in about 10 things a month between school, Redeemer, and work. I have worked for the Minnesota Historical Society for 18 years. I currently manage K-12 programs and service across the state. I play a number of sports, including basketball, golf, softball and poker with friends. I read a lot of history texts and travel the state frequently for fun and work. I would love to see a new batch of young-ish families join Redeemer and become active participants in outreach and spiritual growth programming. Long-term stability of the congregation is an important goal for me as a member of Council. 5 R E D E E M E R PRIMETIME THE SCIENCE AND COMPASSION OF WILDLIFE MEDICINE Phil Jenni, Executive Director of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota January 18, 2018 What: The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota provides quality medical care and rehabilitation for all injured, sick and orphaned wild animals, and shares it knowledge with the people who care about them. It was founded at the University of Minnesota in 1979 as a study club of the Veterinary College. From those humble beginnings of just a few dozen animals a year, the WRC has grown into one of the nation s busiest wildlife hospitals, admitting more than 14,000 patients annually. A year-round staff of just 14 people, nine of which are medical professionals, keeps WRC s budget focused on providing care to its patients. During the summer, WRC adds five to six seasonal staff to run its three nurseries (Avian, Mammal and Waterfowl). Phil Jenni, Executive Director, shares the mission of the Center, the philosophy of compassion and shares stories of wildlife that have been returned to the wilderness. If you have ever rescued a baby bird that fell out of its nest, you will want to hear all about the WRC of MN and the work it is doing. Redeemer Book Club - January Meeting Read our January book and stop by to discuss an interesting and remarkable story from our own American history on Tuesday, January 9th at 7 pm in the Redeemer Library. One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus Leader: Nadine Myers This is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.
